When I arrived home this evening, a tiny baby bird was on my doorstep. My hands were full from Walmart, so the plan was to slip in and then come back for it, but it ran inside. This happened to me before! I fed the bird with special formula every couple of hours, but it still died. Since I fixated on it one day flying free, its death devastated me. I had a funeral of sorts and wrote a poem. I don't want to make the same mistake. It's caged in a shoebox right now. This little fella has a strong will to live. It's fighting to get out. It's almost midnight. I have no choice but to keep it caged till the morning. Where can I take it where they will feed and care for it better than I can?

Call a wildlife center, such as Oatland Island Wildlife Center of Savannah (912-395-1212). They can point you in the right direction.

Good luck.

Caging a bird in a small dark shoebox overnight would be extremely stressful and scary for it and sure to only add to it's trauma or injury. It could hurt itself more trying to get out. Maybe that's why the other one died.

You can take it to any veterinarian, I believe . That's what I did for some baby squirrels I saved after their mother got hit by a car. Your city should have at least one emergency 24-hour care vet....

I'd google one and get there asap.

I found this website http://www.marathonwildbirdcenter.org/baby_birds.html

it says to call your local SPCA.

Also search here, as i have no idea which state you are in, but it has phone numbers you could call to, which is helpful for a 'quick' rescue mission.
http://wildlifeinternational.org/EN/public/emergency/emergencyrehab.html
You probably already did that, but i'll mention in any case, dont forget to put a towel or a clothes item for the baby bird to sit on and stay warm, and don't feed it water.

Good luck and good for you for looking out for it!!baby birds are 100 times more difficult to take care off than a kitten or a puppy is the truth.

Called so many places. They all said no. No SPCA office here. Wildlife Rescue went out of business. Every vet I called said they couldn't help. So, I just put birdy fluffa in my car and drove to the first one that said no. When they saw it, they couldn't turn me away. One of the vets said to leave it, and she would try to get it to eat. It's really eager to fly--just not quite there yet. It probably attempted to fly and fell. The vet said it looks like a wren.

The other bird wasn't caged. I had to with this one, for its own safety. The other one was in an open box. It was just a place to put it where I could change out the paper towels. It was way younger and was very calm. It thought I was its mommy. All it did was eat and sleep and poop. It slept standing up. So cute! The mother probably kicked it out, because it had a weak heart or something. Mother Nature can be cruel. A cat almost got it before I did. I gave it a few more days of life, and at least it knew it was loved.

Baby Bird

Oh, little One
A fragile spark of Life
Never to be engulfed in flame
Perched on a Payless shoe box
Missing your mother
No substitute am I

...but I Loved you

Abandoned and lost
Fed foreign food
And kept isolated
For your own safety
Just for a little while
Until you are strong enough to leave
And I, tortured by your loneliness
Waiting for the day
You can fly away

...because I Love you

Alas, your wings will never soar
On Earthly winds
Nor will you perch on power lines
Like your brothers and sisters
Or taste the misty rain upon your face
For death stole you away
When I wasn't looking
And left me with the pain
That never heals
But this day
And every day
You'll soar on wings among the Angels
And fly toward a Sun that never fades

...and I will always, always Love you

Must be the season. I came across this guy the other day while getting gas. He was just hanging out on top of this hedge. I could get as close as I wanted to. Right before I took this picture [from close range] he tucked his head under his wing. [I hope] Fortunately, he wasn't there when I went back later that day to fill my wife's car.

..I have taken in baby birds..
it's illegal, we are suppose to
let the circle of life deal with it...

you feed them canned cat food with
tweezers..

when they can fly, I reunite them
with their mum, everytime,
the mom has taken them back...

it's a miracle to me...

it's just that time of year..
they fall out of their nests,
or fall trying to fly...

a bird a cage is best,
so they can perch!

Yes, mushed foods. No whole worms/bugs. I`ve never used cat food but .... I would be concerned of the chemicals or preservatives in it.
Natural earth worms or mealy worms smashed up and tweezered or eye dropper (suctioned to the dropper not necessarily liquified) to drop it down the hatch

Indeed a low perch is great!
I babies!

O, juni, hehe
I can't smash bugs, lol

my vet told me to feed them
canned cat food, for the nutrition..

you are right though, chemicals-preservatives
are nasty for A11 of Us. ...

Indeed and with my diabetic dog, I worry more now about additives.
I don`t have a problem mashing Gods food (bugs/worms)for the babies . A natural cycle in my eyes.

It's easy to say no on the phone. Not so easy when cute little eyes are looking up at you. The vet bonded with the baby, and she took two days off to take him home and care for him.
