My sinus/nasal inflammation has been so bad recently I have slept on the couch nearly every night after my husband kicks me out of bed cause he can't sleep with the sound of my breathing. When I say *inflammation*, I mean, minimal to NO air able to pass through my nasal cavity as the tissues are swelled shut. I have taken Claritin (for other allergy symptoms) and Echinachea (for the immune response) and to no avail. When it gets super bad, I feel pressure/swelling all the way up into my ears. I have noticed that this happens more strongly when I am under stress as it got AWFUL the months before the wedding, but had calmed down until we started the process of buying our first home, which has been extremely stressful  After 4 nights of interrupted and lousy sleep, I am at my wits ends. I'm not a bug believer in Western medicine as a rule, but I don't know if they would even have a clue where to start, so I'm holding off there. Any ideas to stave off this "allergic" reaction? My main allergies are indoor mold, ragweed, dust-mites and cat (we have two but nothing has changed to make that worse).

I struggle with such too.
The years of allergy desensitization shots helped but not enough.So I do this:
http://www.linda-goodman.com/ubb/Forum3/HTML/002925.html I use a 4 hour nasal spray just to get things open enough to use the neti pot.
That also washes out the decongestant. Then use the 4 hour spray decongestant later so I can try and sleep. Another thing are these two products which also help me:
http://www.maxairnosecones.com/ I will have to find the name of the other kind I used which were more discrete and disposable. PS.
Folks often think it is cat fur that they are allergic to.
More likely cat dandruff and cat saliva.
There are cat wipes you can wipe your cat off with,
they help reduce the problem.
Or take a damp washcloth to your cat.
Or bathe them if it is a dandruffy cat.
Use a HEPA filter when you vacuum too.
The unavoidable molds is what usually gets to me these days.

Thanks, Lexx I really appreciate your ideas, and I do have a neti pot. The couple times I've tried it, it felt unpleasant, but will try again once this inflammation subsides. I did end up going to my new Dr and he prescribed a short dose of steroids, along with Flonase and an anti-biotic. I'm not crazy about taking the anit-biotic as my digestive system is *extremely* sensitive to that type of med, but it is only a 5 day deos and I will eat yogart to counteract. I do have a dandruffy cat (Jesse, but we call him Jester or Butter cause he's so hilarious) and I find my reactions are worse to him coming near my face, especially when sleeping an he is a true cuddler, so it's difficult to make him understand that sleeping by momma's face is NOT a good idea, LOL. I will try wiping both cats down, that is a great idea! The other cat (Boots) hates water, and so a wipe is the closest she would get to moisture. I do have a HEPA filter on my vacuum, just don't vacuum enough as we are too cluttered lately. New house we are buying has Pergo floors in living room, so that should help as the cats love playing there the best. IP: Logged |

Kat, geez I`m sorry to hear you`re sick I`m allergic to one cat but never before or since with others. My Himalayan ChrisCat is a longhair but it is the dander/saliva combo that is my undoing. Having him bathed & groomed once every six weeks knocks the dander, sniffles congestion down. Give groomers a call, it doesn`t cost very much and down there, the competition should make it even less costly. ------------------

Hey Friends,I am feeling quite a bit better, especially after two decent nights of sleep. The steroids appear to be doing their job and I appreciate your support a lot! Thanks for checking in and I have my fingers crossed that the breathing bit is under control for now...I really do need my rest We are in the process of buying our first home and that has added a whole new level of stress to the equation, good stress, but change and I'm not the best at rolling with uncertainties... Yes, a short run of nasal steroids can help and maybe even let you heal so it never gets so bad again.

Just make sure it's not a mold issue because just breathing in mold spores can be VERY toxic to the system.I am highly allergic to mold and have had similar symptoms as you described being around it before. It's more than just an allergic reaction and can start to invade and live in your body and cause a whole host of problems. Especially when it effects the brain. Googling can turn up more info. Also, I too, am allergic to cats, but at different points in my life, I have been less allergic than others. It could be your system developed a sensitivity again or immunity got lowered, so that could also be an issue. Glad to hear you are better now and on your way to finding a new home.  Best of luck. Btw grapefruit seed extract diluted in water is great at killing all kinds of things.
