Well, I don't know, I was only five when Andrew hit- I remember staying at my cousin's house in further inland Broward (which is where I'll be staying again this time) and I just remember how loud it was and how scared I was. I know hurricanes are horrible, don't worry, I'm not that big of an idiot, I'm just being a Piscean and looking at everything through rose-colored glasses. Besides, I go where my family makes me go, I'm still only a teenager. We've got everything pretty much planned out, most of my family lives miles inland.

Hurricanes are awful, my house could be completely destroyed, people could die, but I can't help but think that all of the hype around it is a bit thrilling, just because, you know, it's such a twist on ordinary daily life. I'm dumb, I know, but yeah. I'll be fine.

No worries, Everlong - I'm a Fish, too, and tornados're what always get me excited.
I've got to admit, part of me's hyped about the hurricane, too, as horrible as it may be.

Well, I'm worried about some family friends down in Melbourne.
They live in a well-built, hurricane-"proofed" house that's 50 years old, so I hope they'll be fine.

Well, Melbourne goes from the edge of the east coast to well inland... just not as inland as orlando - but where the topography is not negative, and with good preparation, can most certainly be survived.

I just thought of something, but I remember a hurricane once, that did like an odd zig-zag, hitting where absolutely no one expected it to. Perhaps crossing over to the other coast and then stalling and strengthening, and starting all over again. I swear. It's a frickin hurricane, not a poodle.... Cha! Cha! I think I hear someone mowing their lawn at 10:45 pm. Cha! Cha!

Anyone see the 11 PM advisory?

Heh, the rose-colored glasses are starting to fall off and now my excitement is pretty much tinged with terror. They're saying that it could get even stronger, and now we're under a hurricane watch, and they're saying that it's probably going to turn into a warning in south Florida by the time we wake up tomorrow.

Yes Love ... you need to leave as far inland as you can, just make sure it doesn't turn around! You never know...

All right, so, here's my lost post. I'll be leaving to go to west Broward (Pembroke Pines) to stay with my great aunt in about an hour or two so we don't get caught in traffic when everyone on the beach starts evacuating. It's pretty nuts here.

So, best of luck to everyone, and lets all keep our fingers crossed and hope that we're all okay.

OK Everlong - I have family in Pembroke Pines. You should be fine as long as you are in a sturdy one-story building, OK? Find the center of the house just in case, and make sure there's enough room for people to go to. You never know how roofs are made sometimes.

Hey guys - I'm OK - Concentrating on staying mellow. It's not like Post Traumatic Syndrome is coming on because I've been through hurricanes, I've always liked them, and I know how to prepare for them. So I have a sense of control. Actually, there are very few things in life that scares me.

Anyways, I actually truly went out to buy more rope, and I actually truly got there to find THE LAST ONES left! Something told me to hurry up and get to the store NOW! Also got the last of the ice bags at this "no name" kind of convenience store (which was already out of gas)...

... and that's it. Capt'n Spunky is still getting better and stronger each day, and last night I ordered his favorite - Pizza delivery! And he ate several pieces of crust, much more than he's been eating, so that was good.

It's muggy humid like PURE HELLL right now out there. People have to pace themselves right now.

I'm going to wait until the sun is going down before I do the boarding up and tieing down. Whatever I don't finish tonight, I'll finish tomorrow morning before the first signs of the hurricane begins to approach (high winds, rain, lightening).

They are now saying that the hurricane has slowed down in terms of moving TOWARDS something. This is bad because it has more of a chance of strengthening even more now, and it means the hurricane will not arrive and leave quickly, causing "minimal" damage. If it doesn't move quickly, it will linger, and I'll be in deep meditation for 6 hours instead of 2.

Yeah - I wasn't sure if anyone knew this, but it's really organized on the state level. All the schools and some areas of community colleges become shelters. The people who live in mobile homes, etc., get inside the shelter, or people who have lost their home AFTER the hurricane. There are two local radio statios on AM radio here, and one of them is ON it, asking people to please call and report where they are in traffic, and what it's like. I mean, they do this for HOURS AND HOURS. Day and night.

So most truckers have XM satellite radio now - so they, and others, can listen to our local station from much further distances and report in, cuz they have XM. HUGE help, and really, an unexpected source of blessing because it keeps the traffic safe and moving along. It's literally like we are virtually organizing safer ways to travel on a statewide basis. THAT is really cool. So you've got a trucker leaving Vero Beach, who can hear this AM station. He calls in and reports on the air for us local folk. You know, like the traffic's moving but slowly, or, it's a clean ride on such and such road.

North and South we have Turnpike, A1A, South Dixie Hwy, or I-95. That's it. East and West depends greatly on what area of Florida you are in. From here to all the Tampa area, and many miles north of, we have I-75 - BOOM. That's it. From here to east coast, the Bee Line or "Bloody" SR520. They call it "BloodyFiveTwenty"... for a reason. NOT a good road. Between here and Daytona there are no other major east and west roads.

So this organization is ESSENTIAL to getting everyone around safely, to help keep people calm and cool - and today THAT'S impossible. I mean, it's like people's moods are just as pure shyte as you can possibly imagine right now. Wanna see pre-Mad Max stuff? Come on down to the Sunshine State - Florida. (Don't forget to stop at my orange juice stand).

Remember when I said Frances' hurricane strength winds were going to extend out twice as far because it's twice as big? Well I was wrong. Hurriciane force winds will extend out THREE TIMES FARTHER, up to 80 miles. You do the math.

I'm preparing a shelter in my walkin closet, safest place. Take computer in there, papers, etc. No matter if the roof does fly off, me and Capt'n are gonna live through it. Hell, sometimes they find babies still alive clinging to a branch at the top of a tree.

Sure no one would like to join me? We can drink Hurricane's and party like it's 1999.

EEEP!!!
Okay.. this may be totally irrational, but is there a contact number you have entrusted anyone with? Randall?
Just so if power is cut off, and we don't hear from you, we don't get all like freaked out and we know you are safe? Do you know what I mean? I will be sending you lots of love and all that fun stuff.
Next time, I'll hang out in your closet with you..... and then we can come out of the closet together. Have a drink for me!!!!

Well, I'm thinking about everyone in Florida right now. I saw on the news that this hurricane's the size of Texas...and I live in Texas, and have driven from one side to the other of this great state so I know have big "big as Texas" means. *sigh* I also lived through Hurricane Alicia in 1983 and a few others (I lived in galveston - home of the worst natural disaster in US history, the 1900 hurricane - Texans know hurricanes ), so I know what I'm saying when I say this one's pretty nasty. Don't take any chances guys, OK?

This is going to be a hard weekend for many people. I feel so bad for the people in the Bahamas - this could be a horrible disaster for them.

I know. I said with the first hurricane that it was a different breed when it was still far away. So is this one. God Speed is all I can say, you know?

Pix - I don't know whether to spaz out because you want my phone number, or whether to be a happy camper about the closet. The phone situation is just as complicated with my family, yo, ya'll? I have a cell I don't mind giving out privately, but cells may be down. I'll turn the ringer on the land line phone, but phone service might be down. No electricity FOR SURE.

You just have to imagine, like, if someone forced you to take another vacation right this second, and you don't want to. Or like, you fear you may be going to hell. I don't know. It's real life.

Wait, did I mention? Oh wait! We haven't heard from Shawnee for a while. She must be doing well with that prince she met. Well, I was going to say this well-known story with the oldtimers here. Janet Reno's mom built a house with her own two hands, and it was the only structure with no real damage at all. That's always been really inspiring to me, she was one of the original American-Indians with true spirit.

Man - a Libra ain't gonna go THAT far, I don't think. Sooner or later, a cute guy is gonna go by and she'll get help. More like an Aries, like Audrey Hepburn, I believe, but I agreed with her philosophy of marriage. Separate houses! Date each other!

A Pisces?

Who would most likely build "one serious house" with their bare hands?

Hey! Where IS everybody? You're not watching the news, are you? Don't watch the news. I limit myself. It just makes you go hysterical. You just have to prepare, stay calm, use common sense.

News?
Naaah.

We just went out to a pretty good Thai place (yes, ladies and gentlemen, Daleville, AL has TWO Thai restaurants...no book stores...the closest book store is 40 minutes away) and've rented a couple of fliks for the weekend...rented going on the hope that our power doesn't go out.

re: Family Friends: Yeah, they'll be fine. They're close to the water and they're older, but they also have reinforced roofs (...rooves?)

They keep lowering the storm's projeced path:

So I hope ya'll are alright.
The way it's going, we'll probably just get tropical storm force stuff.

They are saying the hurricane is currently in a state of fluctuation, and will then come back out of that, and perhaps turn into a Category 5. The worst part is, this hurricane is traveling towards Florida at half the speed as Charley was. Frances is going only 10mph, as opposed to 20mph. So that means it has more time over the ocean. See where I'm going with this?

The most dangerous thing about a hurricane is, it's unpredicatability. Trust me on that.

Oh, I meant to say, if you want to know where I am, if you look at a map and see the big black dot labeled "ORLANDO", well I'm northeast of that dot, half-way to Sanford. Just so you realize, Orlando is a big place with many sub-zones. The city itself is in Orange County, I'm in Seminole County.

This is authentic satellite imagery of how it looks coming towards us right now. At the point where Florida becomes the widest in the peninsula, I live almost right in the middle of that, but maybe 35 miles more towards the east coast.

If it comes to us via Melbourne, it won't be good. There are many many acres of undeveloped land on that diagonal towards Orlando, some of it swamp land with water, which will just strengthen the hurricane. There are also two major rivers, the Banana River & the St. Johns River.

Here's what every major street looks like. Now go back and look at that satellite image. 2.5 million people are trying to get away from this thing up that skinny piece of land -
