I think the Mercurial Planets are the most "Infophobic" - Like Aquarius, Gemini & Virgo. I say Aquarius even though it's not ruled by Mercury because they are so electrical.

I'm going to go vomit. They just said a recognizance plane just measured winds in Hurricane Ivan just 60 feet above sea level is "... in excess of 200 mph ..."

If I were anymore south than Orlando, I'd high-tail it outta there. I'd high-tail it now because it's supposed to be here in Orlando Monday night/Tuesday morning, probably in the dark.

I am nervous, but I am confident that my roof will hold up. No one around here is taking down their boarding or shutters. Me too. Why?

Some of the newer structures & homes around me had "some" roof damage, some more than others. NO ONE in my "structure age group" in this division had any roof damage whatsoever. This is key. If you see roof damage, check for indoor leaking.

If there is no #4, then maybe I'll get a chance to just have the roof looked at and checked for attachment loosening's, etc. I've still got my wood fence reinforced with rope, and I must say, I looked at it today and was proud.

Capt'n Spunky continues to improve each day, which is the best news, not one step back yet, so he's a little happier about himself. We don't call him Spunky for nothing. And I don't know... it's good to have you all around. This is a scary scenario for anyone, whether you are viewing from afar, or from right here.

This is a Category 5 right now. So in a way, this is the most dangerous of the three. I say in a way because I already said if I lived south of Orlando - I'd high-tail it right now. As in right this second. More specifically because evacuations have already begun.

aj - Geez, I know. I saw that they're already calling for evacs from FLA.
That's nuts.
This hurricane is nuts - supposed to go up the West Coast and hit the Gulf States, right?

Now I guess I have something to worry about.
We were clipped by the Western side of Frances and just got a wind-driven heavy mist for two days.

Dear Mssr West Coast of Africa,

This is RIDICULOUS! ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS! What in the world has Florida done that's so awful that we're getting a triple whammy? We haven't really gotten a major storm here since Andrew, and this year we're getting THREE from you?

I am NOT amused, Mssr West Coast of Africa, I am NOT amused.

Sincerely,

Everlong

I don't wanna go back to my great aunt's house =(. I will die of boredom. That is, if I don't get killed, because holy potatoes. 200 MPH? And I live in Fort Lauderdale? You can't shutter up big fourth story windows, especially so when you just live with your grandma? Will have to go back to great aunt's house and my mind will implode? My Gemini Asc can't handle all of this cabin fever, ARRR!

Oh my God. I haven't seen the news at all. I assumed that the hurricane wasn't going to hit us at all since it was way down by Venezuela on Tuesday. And today everyone at school is talking about it, and they tell me there's an evacuation for the Keys?

The way I'm handling this one is to just not watch the news. When it's Saturday night or so, I'll see what's happening, but remember what happened with hurricane #1. The most dangerous thing about a hurricane is its unpredictability.

This could go anywhere right now. So...

But what to learn from the last two? Prepare as soon as possible, then stay off the roads.

Everlong -

If you want to track your way up here to my place, let me know. I have a big sofa bed in the living room. How old are you? Just want to make sure. I'm always having trouble remembering everyone's info.

But I'm in between Orlando & Sandford if you look at a map. You would take either Turnpike, I-95 or I-4. And when you go past Disney, you'd have a few more options the rest of the way, but it's way north of Kissimmee which is very important. Just plan it out with minimum complications, and I'm fine with it. I have to stay home to look after Capt'n Spunky, so, it will be a peaceful (as possible) vibe in here.

But let me know as soon as you can. I'd leave now if I were you. Think of your plans after the storm passes here too, you may have trouble getting out for 24 hours if there is a curfew. I mean, if you can outrun the police.

It's really interesting, I had to go to the store one last time, a small local store, and everyone's sense of humor was at an all time high. I loved it. Hey, look at me. I'm the star of the store today. Everyone's laughing at all my jokes. I love hurricanes.

hee hee

No, it's just after a while you just throw everything up in the air and go - whatever - because it seems, YOU are not in control here.

Does anyone remember the movie (I meant to ask earlier) "What's Up Doc?" made in 1971...
It's one of the few video's (yeah, I'm not up to speed with DVD's yet), that I own. That movie just cracks me up. Someone young watching it, and they don't get the humor. It's sobering. Anyways...

... that scene where the VW Bug is getting chased by two cars (like old Impala's or something), and runs over the fresh cement work this guy did by hand with one of those flat things? And then he'd start all over again, making this driveway he's sculpting as smooth as possible. And then the car chase has gone around in a circle yet one more time, and again, all three cars ruin this craftsman's work.

He looses it, and starts jumping up and down on his fresh cement.

That would sum up what people are feeling in the best way. If you see that scene. Well, I can't think of the movie in general without cracking up. With a young CUTIE Ryan O'Neil playing a nerd you wanna just -

Didn't I say it? - Prepare and then don't watch TV......

Only thing is, it's heading towards Prox & Family.

It could still slam into Florida, it's too early. Just have to be prepared. With so much humidity and mosquitos right now, no one has bothered to take down their boarding or shutters. Hee hee...

I'll watch the news every two days, just to see the satellite photos, make my own prediction, and then turn the TV off...

Basically ...

We were expecting it here Saturday, and now they are saying Tuesday. Schools around here closed down on Friday. We thought it would be gone by now. Oh, and with all the Virgo transits happening to everyone right now.... you can only imagine...

Yeah, Jase's on TDY up in Huntsville until Wednesday or Thursday for a sleep study payed for by Uncle Sam, so by the time he can drive back it may be too late to do so safely. He'll either hunker down there upstate or brave the approaching wind and rain to get back here. If it looks as if the drive will be rough, I'd rather he do the former - he drives a '64 Comet...not exactly the safest thing during a storm like this, excepting the fact that it's heavy as heck.

As for Meg and me, we'll see how the path goes. If it looks like it'll have a good deal of land to pass or like it'll graze us, we're here. If Ivan decides to plow through the Pandhandle and into UCLA (the Upper Corner of Lower Alabama), we've some family friends a day's drive in South Carolina who've offered us shelter for the duration.

We'll just see how he blows...

Well, that's the thing. No matter where it goes, someone is going to be affected. Now remember, this is probably going to be a stronger storm, with hurricane winds extending out perhaps 100 miles. Don't get on the street in the storm. Please. All it takes is for one stop sign to get blown down, or one traffic signal out ... we had so many accidents out here, and trees falling across roads and crushing cars.

This is a Category 5, 160 mph. No matter what they are saying, it could STILL slam into Orlando. Category 5 is "catastrophic damage" (I'm sure you know) - so - if I were you, and I'm not, but if I was, I would be preparing no later than right now. Please be careful.

BTW - just reminding that even if the weather report says "Sustain Hurricane Winds of 160 mph" - the wind GUSTS will be as high as 200 mph. It only takes one.

It's weakened a bit down to a 4 (for now) because of strong Westerly winds and dry high-altitude air, but looks like it's going to hit to the West of us...
if that's the case, the eye'll have more land to traverse before it gets to us, but we'll also get the brunt of the stronger north-easterly side. Hurricane-force winds extend 100 miles out on all sides from the eyewall.
My mother-in-law just called to remind me to fill up my gas tank and withdraw a couple hundred dollars from the bank earlier rather than later today and she expressed her concern over the possibility of tornados spawning.

We'll see what happens...

Looks like we'll be driving up to Huntsville, too.
We'll either get a hotel room, stay w/ Jase's friend up there, or see if we can get a room in guest quarters at Redstone.

OK - we still expect rain and wind here in Central Florida, and it's like we are holding our breath over here so maybe the hurricane won't notice us. But reality is, it can change it's mind (which is why they started naming hurricanes after women only - it's our perogative - but was no longer politically correct - so we have unisexual hurricanes - I wonder if we go back to naming them only after women, if the hurricanes will stop being mad at us and go away).

Prayers to everyone, and for everyone's safety.

Hurricane Ivan Sept 14.04

I'm home free! Or atleast, you know, I feel that way since I haven't watched the news at all in a week. Very liberating.

Thanks for the offer astro, that's very kind of you, but it goes along with hurricane tradition that my whole family panics and you know, panicness makes people come together? I don't know, I always end up staying with my great aunt or second cousin =).

Does anyone here read the Miami Herald? Dave Barry's column today was v. funny.

Heya

I'm up at Redstone Arsenal now writing to you from the library - it's actually stunningly pretty, for a military post, with lots of grand old trees. Huntsville isn't bad shakes, either.

The weather's beautiful up here (in the 70s and sunny), though they're expecting tropical storm force winds to start up tonight and run through Thursday and maybe Friday...better than Cat 3 or 4 winds, anyway.
The power's apparently already out back at Ft Rucker. I unplugged everything but the fridge and one telephone/answering machine before I left, but when my Grandmother called to try to get ahold of me, she got no answer.

As we left, my neighbor's said that they were going, too; and as I drove up I-65 every third car or so was from Florida. I've no doubt that the panhandle and southern Alabama/Miss are in for a rough ride.

Well, I better get off - Meg's in a Baby Bjorn and is starting to get restless (attracting the attention of others trying to use the library in peace).

Be safe, everyone.
