So....I sent a test email from my yahoo address to my work email, just to see how long it would take to receive it. (Cuz, ok, I'll admit it, paras - I thought you exagerating just a little bit)...Anyway, I sent that test email on Monday, and it is now Thursday, and I still haven't received it.

You're right. Yahoo sucks, bites, licks and blows.

So, what's a good alternative?

Well, Lioneye, the best alternative is to make a phone call to your ISP (Internet Service Provider -- the people you pay every month for the ability to get online) and ask them to set up a real (POP3) e-mail account for you.

Now, here in the U.S., every subscription to internet service comes with one or more (usually more) POP3 e-mail accounts available. Personally, I use a small, local ISP (pcis.net), and my account came with 5 e-mail addresses. I don't imagine it's too much different in Canada, though I know some of my friends in other countries don't get this option.

To set up your e-mailbox, you simply call them and tell them what username and password you want to use. The username is the part that comes before the @ symbol in the mail address. "nimh" is the username for "nimh@pcis.net". You will also give them a password. This is so that no one else but you can get into your mailbox.

Then you have to download a program called a "mail client" that is made to use POP3 e-mail. Every version of Microsoft Windows comes with one automatically installed, it's called Outlook Express. There are thousands of mail clients available on the World Wide Web to download. I use Pegasus Mail, but it's not exactly user friendly. Eudora is a good program, too, and much easier.

After getting/installing the mail client program (or choosing Outlook Express), you have to set it up. You have to give the program a few pieces of information, so it knows where your mailbox is and how to access it. Specifically, it needs to know:

1. Your e-mailbox's username
2. Your e-mailbox's password
3. The computer name of your ISP's incomiong and outgoing mail server (for example, mine is mail.pcis.net) Some ISP's use a separate server (computer) for incoming and outgoing mail. Mine doesn't, so I just put "mail.pcis.net" into the mail client in both places.

Be sure to ask your ISP for the incoming (pop3) and outgoing (smtp) mail server when you call!

Call your ISP and ask them if you have e-mail addresses available to you, and get back to me. If you have any questions, any trouble setting it up, let me know, I'd be more than glad to help. If you don't have real pop3 mail available to you, I'll try to find a halfways-decent webmail service for you. K?

Ok, bear with me here...if I'm using Outlook, or Eudora, or Pegasis, that email account can only be accessed from the computer in which it is installed and set up. Right? If so, the thing is, I want to be able to access it from work, home, my mom's house, my sister's house, where-ever the heck I may be...so, that's why I need a web-based email account like yahoo.

(Or, am I mistaken?)

The email program I use at work is Groupwise, and I have no choice but to use that one. We all have to use it. I can't have two email programs working in the same computer, can I?

I'm sorry if I sound daft, paras. I'm no techie, that's for sure. I'm sure glad some people here are, though.

Lioneye:

Acually, you can check a pop3 e-mail account from any computer you like, using any e-mail program you like, at any given moment. The only stipulation is that you set the program up for it -- ie, tell it the username, password, and incoming/outgoing mail servers -- which is, undeniably, a small nuisance. But for the speed and reliability of pop3 mail from my ISP, I put up with it. Webmail servers, being so widely (and carelessly) used by the public, have a massive amount of data to process at any given time, which is why there are sometimes long delayes between one person sending and the other receiving. Also, think about errors. If Yahoo or Hotmail gets a bug in its works... who do you complain to? No one, because since it is a free service, no one has "the right to" complain; whereas you pay good money to your ISP, so when there's a problem, they have an interest in fixing it quickly.

But, for sheer portability (i.e., checking your mail from wherever/whenever, quickly (i.e., wiothout setting up a mail client)), yeah, a webmail account can be (kind of) useful. (Get the feeling I just don't like webmail at all?? )

Some ISP's nowadays -- mine included -- have a spot on their website where you can check your pop3 mail account through the web, just like it was Hotmail or Yahoo. Very cool. Check your ISP's webpage! If they do this, then you'll have the best of both worlds .

Who is your ISP anyway? Just out of curiosity, but I'd like to visit their website and see if this information is posted there.

And you can have as many e-mail programs as you like installed on a given computer. But since most of them are designed to handle multiple accounts, there isn't much need for it. (I could understand you not wanting to go farking around with Groupwise at your workplace, though).

And please don't worry about "sounding daft". We aren't born knowing this stuff, you know!

Philbird:

Yes, I received your e-mail. Thank you! I'll get back to you on it soon..

Actually, I've just been caught up in some other projects, Windy. My apologies. I'll get back to you this evening with your results, ok? And, ummm, since you have a Yahoo address, I may have a hard time sending you an e-mail. Is it ok if I post the results here?

Actually, Yin, it works quite well for me. Saaayyy... didn't you tell me that the reason I "rubbed you the wrong way" in the first place was because you thought I was telling you what to do? And now you're going to tell me not to be sarcastic? Tsk, tsk...

Here are your results:

Vigilant: 0/14 (0%)
Solitary: 5/14 (35%)
Idiosyncratic: 7/18 (38%)
Adventurous: 5/16 (31%)
Mercurial: 4/18 (22%)
Dramatic: 3/16 (18%)
Self-Confident: 2/18 (11%)
Sensitive: 1/14 (7%)
Devoted: 2/16 (12%)
Conscientious: 7/16 (43%)
Leisurely: 4/14 (28%)
Aggressive: 1/16 (6%)
Self-Sacrificing: 4/16 (25%)
Serious: 1/14 (7%)

And in graph form:

You scored highest in Conscientious, followed by Idiosyncratic.
You have an Aquarian Sun, Capricorn Rising, and an Aquarian Moon.

These placements fit the Knowflakes' guesses perfectly, as Conscientious was deemed most likely to symbolize Capricorn, and Idiosyncratic to reflect Aquarius.

Thanks for your input! I hope you find this as interesting as I do!

I've received a lot of "delivery failure" notices back from trying to send to Yahoo! addresses (which 99% of you seem to have, damn it all), so anyone else who didn't get their results, speak up and I'll post 'em.
