I should think I would prefer to be the wife, so I'd have legal rights, and I'd prefer my children to be legitimate (like I wasn't).

I could handle being the lover, maybe, if the guy had long-term, think 5+ years, of geographical/emotional/physical distance from his "wife" and they were married in name only for children involved.
