I'm not sure if it's been discussed and I know very little about it- I just discovered it in fact. I'm going to look up the history and post about it. So far, all I know is- there is a kind of symbol or "picture" for every degree of every sign, which gives a message.
I looked up my sun: 5 degrees Aquarius, and this is what it says:
A COUNCIL OF ANCESTORS HAS BEEN CALLED TO GUIDE A MAN
and there is a little explanation below. It's very interesting. If anyone wants to look it up themselves, type in www.sabiansymbols.com/scorpio25.htm * for example.

*[signdegree]

I'll be back..

P.S. if you know anything more about this, please write..

Hi whiterabbit,

If your Sun is at 5 degrees Aqua, you will want to read the Sabian Symbol for 6 degrees Aqua. You always read the next degree up. I'm pressed for time right now, but I will try to find the thread I started that explains why this is. ...........

I've heard of Sabian Symbols before, but I have no idea how to use them.

Can we even do that? Use them? What are they for?

Hi,
thanks for the links, this is so interesting, I can't believe I've never heard of it before!
Do you think that it can be used with the entire birth chart, or just the Sun? It seems like it would be relevant to the entire chart- the energies of that degree "vibrating" through your different planets. lol.. or have I just gone batty?
Oh, by the way, turns out my Sun symbol is
"A performer of a mystery play"- well, inexplicably, I really identify with this!
What are your degrees/symbols? Do you regularly use it in analyzing birth charts? (questions aimed at anyone familiar with the symbols)

Thank you devilfish! The link I had no longer exists. Seems like these are the short versions of the symbols but better than nothing!

Hi whiterabbit. Yes, from what I understand, they are meant to be used with the whole birthchart. You can even include the angles. I dont regularly use them but, do find them fascinating! I eventually want to pick up Marc Edmund Jones' book on them.

My Sun here says:
"A squaw selling beads." 27 taurus
But I've read the full version and it says something about an old Indian woman selling beads on a blanket......something to that effect. I'd like to find another site that goes into the full interpretations....

They are meant to be meditated upon.

quote:
One of the things that makes them so special is that although they have their roots in ancient days in Mesopotamia, they speak to us about our modern lives, here in the 21st century. They contain the images of our modern culture which makes them so accessible to our understanding today.

The Symbols manifest in our lives on every level: the emotional, spiritual, physical and the mundane. They show us what we need to see.

Whether you wish to gain insight into questions about your day to day life, spiritual development or to deepen your interpretation of astrology and the degrees of the zodiac, the Sabian Symbols will respond - they are truly an inspiration and a gift.

What the hell... I type in Pisces and my number and its a "page cannot be found message LOL" bloody typical

Anyone else have this problem...

EDIT- HOLY CRAP!! That site is mental, If you think of nothing and type in a Sign and number nothing comes up, which was what was happening with me, so I thought of a question and typed in the identical sign and number I used before and... something came up this time!!

Again I fired a blank to see if its random and no... nothing came up, and nothing continued to come up until I asked myself a question :| How the hell does the site know what I'm thinking and more importantly WHEN I'm thinking a question. :|

hey 26t,
I love the idea of meditating upon the symbols- it adds a whole other dimension to my birtch chart, which I have been getting a little tired of lately..lol. just kidding.
But it really does infuse astrology with a mysticism different from the one I'm used to. I find the images really interesting too, and definitely can see how I could meditate on them- they are filled with possibilities. I might even try it tonight.
Have you read the 27 Taurus bit on the site you got that quote from?
just in case you haven't:

AN OLD INDIAN WOMAN SELLING BEADS AND TRINKETS

Don't underestimate yourself and do only what you think others believe you are capable of. These very limitations are telling you of hidden talents and skills that you take for granted. There is something very worthwhile on offer here, don't wait for passersby to stop and pay attention! Get out and show what talents and abilities you have.
Older, wiser elements of society making offerings to the younger, less integrated. Small, but worthy offerings. Handicrafts. Artifacts of the tribe or clan.

The Caution: Looking down on those that seem less fortunate.

But I would definitely love to get that books as well and read about it in-depth. I'm totally fascinated.

lei..
um, that's pretty effin nuts..I'm not 100% sure if I understood you, though. So if you typed in sagittarius3 without concentrating, it wouldn't work, but if you typed in another sign and number and concentrated, it would?

Hey this is kewl...What do Sabians believe in and practice???

I have Aqua 10°15'07 in 10th house.

This is what I got for 10 Aquarius....

A MAN WHO HAD FOR A TIME BECOME THE EMBODIMENT OF AN IDEAL IS MADE TO REALIZE THAT AS A PERSON HE IS NOT THIS IDEAL

You may find that you are looking at yourself or someone else and finding things a little less than you had thought. The important thing here may be to understand that popular support does not always equate to true depth of character and self-worth. Opportunities that are merely fleeting may present themselves. Be wary of committing before you understand what you are dealing with.
Staying true to oneself. Reversals of fortune. Waking up just in time.

The Caution: Clinging to false feelings of fame. Finding out that someone hasn't lived up to who they said they were.

Hi whiterabbit,

Yeah, it's cool to let your mind spiral off of the different symbols, there are always many personal messages within them.

I've got to go back to that site I found and read the rest of them. Hadnt taken a good look at it when I posted that. I read all of the ones for my chart some time ago, but have forgotten them all now. I love the image I get from the one for my Sun. And the interp they give really speaks to me as well!! Thanks for posting it!

I agree astrojunkie.

Here's the one for my Moon. Wow!

A MAN GAINING SECRET KNOWLEDGE FROM AN ANCIENT SCROLL HE IS READING

There may be a feeling of not knowing what to do, going back to the essential truths of the matter; the inner wisdom of the ages, can bring insights and knowledge that opens one up to whole new understandings. Modern solutions may not help at this time. Understanding will come through patient, steady work and illuminating inspiration.
Learning from the ancient mysteries. Reading books, manuscripts and lessons. Reading between the lines. Finding clues from the past and applying them to the present.

The Caution: Failing to acknowledge old wisdom. Losing one's common sense.

I like the one for my DC: (I'm sure no one cares, but I'm bored. )

A FRAGILE MISS, REPRESENTATIVE OF PROUD OLD BLOOD, IS WED IN A MARRIAGE CEREMONY BY A PRIEST TO AN EAGER YOUTH OF THE NEW ORDER

The simplest expressions of the heart and mind may need to be acknowledged in a ritualistic performance. There is a need for sense of blessings from a higher power. Whether this is about an actual 'Marriage Ceremony', a hand-fasting ceremony, or some other kind of bonding ritual, there's a need for people to come together to make commitments and vows to each other.
Sanctified unity. Expressions of loyalty and the making of sacred vows. Making levels of commitment.

The Caution: Rigidly following established rules at the expense of new ways that have greater personal relevance. The forcing of people to come together - perhaps they don't want to. Bondage to social expectations.

FYI, if you want to check your Symbols, you need to type what it is in the address bar. (it tells you how on the site)

Remember to go one degree up from your actual degree.

Wow I loooooove my Moon one! "A LARGE WELL-KEPT PUBLIC PARK" The caution associated with this I really understand.

I like my Sun one too! "A VOLCANIC ERUPTION BRINGING DUST CLOUDS, FLOWING LAVA, EARTH RUMBLINGS" This pictures a situation of catharsis. There may have been an effort made to hold things inside, but now there can be no more resistance and everything is forced out. This could be in the form of anger, but it can also be the explosive form of ideas. Let it blow, as resisting the urge can cause enormous pressure to build up. Look to see if the force of emotions is really related to the current situation.

Cathartic release. Thoughts or ideas pouring out. Torrents of emotion. Anger that needs expression. Pressure cooker environments. After shocks.

The Caution: Over-suppression of energy to the point of explosive disaster. Tantrums. Choking the air with sulfurous dust clouds. Overreactions.

I have noooo idea what they are talking about *sly smile*

My Cappy Asc.: Very interesting!!

A CHILD OF ABOUT FIVE CARRYING A HUGE SHOPPING BAG FILLED WITH GROCERIES

You may feel that you have been lumbered with responsibilities beyond your normal expectations and possibly beyond your capability. Despite being keen and enthusiastic, you must be careful not to try to do too much (in the situation), too quickly. You need to play, be creative and rest as well. If you can find this balance, you will achieve a lot.
Growing up too fast. Being weighed down with the responsibilities of the situation. Taking on things above and beyond what one should.

The Caution: Overloading the innocent and the inexperienced without thought to the consequences. Taking on too much.

OOps!! Didnt round up for my Moon. This is what it really is. ......dat's cool wit me.

A BUTTERFLY PRESERVED AND MADE PERFECT WITH A DART THROUGH IT

Beauty in shape or form has been frozen in one moment, denying the natural process of decay. An archetypal death is symbolized, perfection through sacrifice. As inspiring as this process can be, this can bring difficulties in moving on or changing the situation.
Perfection and beauty made immortal. Moments frozen in time. External beauty that's lacking animation. The "handiwork" of creation on display.

The Caution: Stopping others from growth and change for personal satisfaction or needs. Surrender and immobilization

Anyone else? I love reading them. What do your Uranus and Mars say VTT?

This one is soooo right on for my Saturn in the 7th.

A LARGE CAMEL CROSSING A VAST AND FORBIDDING DESERT

You may find that your situation has already been like an arduous journey, but there is still further to go. Be confident that you have the reserves to survive and the endurance to succeed. You can rely on yourself. Self sufficiency and mental self-control are necessary as is a commitment to get to the other side of your issue..
Completing the journey while protecting oneself from spiritual 'sunstroke'. Facing the tests of karma.

The Caution: Not preparing properly and running out of reserves before the end. Feeling weighed down and in danger of not finishing the objective.
