I thought Jazz dance was a combination of Ballet and African Dance?

If it's not then our Jazz teacher at school is a big fat liar.

To me, Jazz form of dance is the kind you see when you go to a Broadway show ... like Chicago, Rent, 42nd Street or Fiddler on the Roof.

Remember that famous dance scene with chimney sweepers in Mary Poppins?

Like that. Without jazz, it would just be classical ballet, or interpretational modern dance. Tap usually combines with a lot of jazz, and of course, a good base of ballet instruction is helpful to EVERYTHING, including the sport of football (yes they take ballet).

But jazz has a VERY classical base. It has it's own HUGE list of terminology you better know if you wanna keep up with a choreographer. "Heel, ball, toe ..."

Haha, I'm not a dancer...It looks fun, but I'm more on the acting side of performing. But I do journalism, also. I interviewed the teacher for the school newspaper after the fall dance show. One of my questions was "What comprises jazz dance?" or something like that. And I came to such knowledge. Lucky me.

Haha, and I just realized, Stargazer...I read your original post wrong. I thought you said "In my opinion, Ballet is not the root of all dance..."

And while I'm at it - what's the difference between Ballet and Lyrical Ballet?

Lyrical:
Being a blending of ballet, jazz, and modern, lyrical dance smoothly incorporates the techniques of ballet and jazz, the emotions of modern, and the rhythms of jazz. Some dance experts believe it is ballet technique from the waist down and jazz above the waist. The leg work and hip placement come from ballet but the freedom of movement and contraction is from jazz. Others believe what you learn in jazz is all you need to do lyrical dance. However, all experts agree lyrical dance must portray the emotion of the music. This usually means expressing the feelings of the lyrics of a song, hence the name lyrical dance.

This connectivity to the music must be in the dancers' minds during their time on stage. They must express what they hear through their bodies, not just through a series of jazz tricks or complicated steps. Usually a lyrical dance flows from movement to movement with patterns using traditional lines rather than the abstract lines of modern dance or the phrasing of jazz.

What each dancer must ask his/herself are the five W's: who, where, when, what, and why of that particular lyrical piece.

Who: This depends on the music or the lyrics of the song but a dancer must react as a character.

Where: Is there a certain place in which the music must occur? If so, how do the dancers reveal this?

When: Is it a historical piece and does that affect the dance and its emotions?

What: What is the story the dance portrays?

Why: Why is it important for the dancers to portray this particular song? What is the choreographer’s reason for expressing its emotions in dance?

So when a lyrical dance piece surprises you in a contemporary show, sit back and enjoy the dance knowing it is the perfect mix of dance techniques and emotion.

Hope this helps.... Lyrical is actually my favorite to teach as well as to perform... I only sub in those classes this year....

My girls are dancing to the "Sundays" version of Wild Horses (Stones). Thier costumes are great... lots of fringe...I enjoy the whole process....

Rede,

AG is being precise because the "leg" is divided into four astrological parts:
- Thigh - Sagittarius
- Knee - Capricorn
- Calf - Aquarius
- Feet - Pisces

The simplest way to see it is to imagine a person and then to start naming astrological parts from the top down, starting at Aries:
- Head - Aries
- Throat - Taurus
- Arms - Gemini
- Chest - Cancer
- Heart - Leo
- Abdomen - Virgo
- Hips - Libra
- Bowels - Scorpio
...and now see above for the rest!

Naming of parts,

Tim

Is there any association between Geminis and dance? Since they're so good at flirting, it seems natural that they might also 'have all da mooooves' as well

I only mention it, because I think Sags are rather proud of their control of their burning thighs.

Rede411 -

So, creative, yet technical? You HAVE to have respect for the technical and traditional in dance.

Astro junkie,

Yes, Creative yet technical. I studied Ballet all my life which gave me a great base for other types of dance. Ballet is very traditional but very stict as it teached coordination, balance, discipline etc... In later years I developed a more freestyle way of dancing but without that "classical" base of Ballet I wouldn't be nearly as good as I am today.

I agree. Ballet provides a tremendous base for everything. Even my Yoga, Pilates and Karate insructors will all comment on my form by asking if I took ballet. It just shows, even though it's been years.

And YES it requires SO MUCH discipline! Big time!!!! At first the positions feel so abnormal to the body, so reshaping starts from the inside out.
