I have Merc in Libra, 5th house.
I recieve information much better visually then anything else - so I read ALOT! And have a photgraphic memory - very handy for exams
And maybe it's cause my Merc is fairly close to my Libran Venus in 5th also, I have to connect mentally with a person to be friends or closer and I have this self-serving egotist tendency when conversing with guys to read more into our conversation then is really intended for example: he's telling me about the theory of relativity and I'm thinking 'is he telling me this cos he likes me?'

In response to Annabelle86

In typical Scorpio fashion, I'm known for knowing far more about everyone and everything than they know about themselves or me. I usually receive information through loopholes and "back alleys". Through ways that I wasn't intended (eavesdropping, an accidental "stumble" or "glance"), and I have a tendency for thinking everyone I come in contact with is an advocate for "double speak"
Gotta love Pluto

This is so true of me...even though I'm a leo mercury in the 2nd house my most exact aspect to mercury is mercury square pluto. I am VERY knowledgable about any and everything around me...I also have a tendency to find information from various channels...and yes I have been the type fo try to find out as much (covertly of course) as possible about someone I like.

Wow, thanks for all the replies! So interesting. I actually HATE having mercury in Taurus... it infuriates me because there's so much up there in my head but I can't always get it out - in fact through writing is much easier for me. I talk A LOT thanks to my Sag rising but sometimes it takes me a minute to process information and I have to consider my reply sometimes before it comes out. I know I'm intelligent but not being able to get it out quickly kind of makes me feel slightly retarded. When I was doing my MA, my supervisor would press me for quick answers to his very abstract questions and I hated it... lol. I can deal with abstractions very easily... in fact just last I was having an awesome convo with my bf about Heidegger and phenomenology... but it's not always that I can express those things in a fast way. It really does frustrate me to no end.

GeminiLover - My Mercury in Taurus friends are some of the brightest people I know. Maybe it's a matter of opposites attracting (I have Mercury in Scorpio), but I really appreciate the patient and thorough way Taurus Mercury's study a subject. I think Neon Artemis' description of Mercury in Taurus being efficient and considering is right on. BTW, I was a Philosophy major (never took a Phenomenology course though) so you mentioning Heidegger gave me nice flashbacks to college.

I have Mercury in Scorpio in the first house conjunct Uranus. It's also exactly sextile Saturn in Virgo. I'm a self-diagnosed sufferer of Attention Surplus Disorder. When I'm focused on something--listening to a lecture, writing a letter, reading a book (or the posts here )--a fire could break out and I wouldn't notice. I'm also very quiet when I learn. I'm not the type to participate in class discussions. I have too much of an internal monologue going on to concisely contribute to a discussion.

I also can't help but read between the lines. I enjoy it and to me the surface is only half of the information any situation can provide.

I'm much more observant of the psychological than the physical. I notice the slightest facial expression or vocal inflection, but I won't be able to tell you what color shirt the person was wearing. I'd be a horrible witness for a police sketch artist.

This may be due to my Mercury-Uranus conjunction, but I really enjoy original and different ideas. I don't consider myself to have learned anything if all I've done is memorized. Memorization bores me to tears. I need to analyze and all the better if I'm analyzing something that broadens my perspective or makes me look at things in a fresh way. I love finding new patterns and themes in the details.

Oh how interesting, jane! Great point... I think my Scorpio moon is what makes me do the 'reading between the lines' thing while I'm listening or observing. Often I'll just take things in, and process them on a few different levels at once, but I THEN have to go away and mentally chew on it for a while. Or sometimes I won't notice I've taken something in, and I'll say something about it later. btw, phenomenology is AWESOME... we were just saying last night that it's something that people seem to either love or hate, lol.

GeminiLover - I don't think you should be too harsh on yourself for needing to go away and process ideas in private. You're probably referring to complex ideas like the ones your supervisor would pose. Many people could be given all the time in the world and they wouldn't even know how to begin finding an answer to those kinds of questions. I think part of what makes it difficult to quickly respond is that once the question is asked you're in analysis mode. You haven't yet reached your conclusion. And since you're thoughtful, you know that believing A would bring you to point B and then B could branch out to C OR D and you see the counterarguments and where those would lead...and so on. And you don't want to commit to saying you believe A before you've evaluated where that would lead. For me, with complex ideas (or even not so complex), I don't really know what I think about a subject until I've written about it because then I've been able to privately look at it from all the angles and satisfy all the questions I have. That reminds me, my Mercury in Taurus buddies have a knack for zeroing in on the crucial question in a debate. It might take them a while to find it, but they always find it. So don't feel slow for not having a quick comeback. You're just thoughtful. Unless the questions you need to mull over are how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Then you're just an idiot.

Ooh yes. I think you hit the nail right on the head. That's exactly what used to get to me about my supervisor - I knew I could come up with something brilliant if he would just allow me the mental space to work through it first. I said something to that effect to him, because I felt like our meetings were becoming stressful for me... he would throw out brilliant questions and lead me in interesting directions, but I needed to gather it all up and then go away and process it for myself. But he was all "oh no but you need to be fast and think on your feet"... I'm pretty sure he was a Mercury Gemini. lol (Truly, I seem to recall his birthday being in June!) He is a great guy and meant only the best by trying to push me to be better, but I guess it's been ever since then that I've felt like I'm lacking in some kind of mental skill. lol. So thanks for making me feel better!

A problem I have and that you may have too (due to your Scorpio Moon) is that during a conversation I'm very focused on the people I'm talking to. It's hard for me to give the subject proper attention because I'm thinking too much about the person. I need to be alone to think critically. A conversation is too social.

I had a philosophy professor who wanted me to participate more in class. Unlike your supervisor, her reason wasn't about the importance of developing quick thinking. I think it was more of a girl power kind of thing . One day in class she complained that although our class consistently turned in high quality papers, it was only the same few people who would volunteer to talk and she wanted everyone to participate. Then she said that she especially wanted the girls to participate, and when she said that she looked exactly at me. I started laughing and told her she didn't want to hear what went through my head during a typical class, and then I gave her a demonstration by giving her a rundown of all the thoughts I'd been having during that class. It was a big jumbled mess filled with arguments and counterarguments and went in circles. When I was done she said that I clean up very nicely because my papers were nothing like that. She kept calling on me though for the rest of the semester. So I can relate to not wanting to give your immediate thoughts on a topic. I agree with Lincoln: "It's better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak out and remove all doubt."

Mercury in Cancer here too!!!

I'd really like to know more about this placement but it's hard to find information and others' experiences of it.

My Mercury is in the 12th and doesn't make any main aspects (a loose square aspect to Jupiter though, the orb being about a seven and a half degrees) but there's a quincunx to Uranus and a bi-quintile to Saturn. I have no idea what the Saturn-Mercury bi-quintile means but I did find one article about the quincunx.

Well anyway, I can relate to the descriptions about Mercury in Cancer. Here's some accurate stuff from cafe astrology:

These people communicate with feeling, conveying a sensitive, withdrawn, and thoughtful nature to the people they interact with. If this is the only personal planet in Cancer in their chart, they may come across as more personal and sensitive than they actually are. (Yep, I'm an extroverted and confident Leo but my speech and way to think is a little different..)

No matter how free-spirited the rest of their natal charts may be, Mercury in Cancer people can be very subjective and personal, or they opt not to talk at all.

You can bet that Mercury in Cancer natives will remember almost anything -- from their own past, to your conversation two months ago. You might notice their memory is a little skewed in the direction of emotion. The truth is, these people remember the mood surrounding all the moments they have stored in their memory. This is because they "feel you out" when you are talking to them. The words are not as important to them as the emotions behind them. (I am quite patient, the meaning behind words is the most important thing.)

Mercury in Cancer retains a lot of information, and learns best when they feel emotionally balanced. They prefer to focus their concentration on subjects, and approach problems in a step-by-step manner, "feeling out" an answer. This position gives the gift of rhythm and beat.

...In fact, it is extraordinarily easy for them to get "lost" in the other person's expression and opinion. For a while, they can almost lose their own opinions and completely step into the other's shoes. (I somehow get very easily influenced, so sometimes I consciously avoid new information and the opinions of others as to not to get too anxious.)

Mercury in Cancer is generally attracted to poetry, archaic language, expressions of yesteryear, and the like. Because they are so aware of others' emotions, they can be somewhat diplomatic in their dealings with people.

These people appear to take their time when they make a decision, and even when they form an opinion. They need to step away from others, and be alone with themselves to explore all that they have absorbed.

Another Mercury in Cancer! It's in my 8th house. I also have an excellent memory. My Mercury is Rx. One thing that drives me nuts is if I say something stupid or do something foolish I harp on it. I will focus on it for days or weeks. Drives me nuts.

Mercury aspects are:

Sextile to mars and Saturn (Virgo 10th)
Trine to Uranus(Scorpio 12th) and Ascendent (Scorpio)
Square to Pluto (Libra 11th)

Glad I'm not the only one who does that.

I have Merc in Scorp in the 12th...and also gather a lot of information and file it away for future use...I've gotten pretty good at the Scorp 'poker face' and won't show my emotions on the surface (pretty good for a Sag sun/asc/mars/jupiter!) but am good at taking it all in nonetheless...I just know things about people without being told.

Mercury in Sagittarius in the 9th house ... It's conjunct Uranus and Jupiter, square Ascendant, trine Moon and sextile Venus.

I tend to speak rather fast. My mind seems to be working at a higher speed than my mouth can talk. I prefer knowing a little about every subject to knowing everything about just one subject. Seeing the big picture is more important to me than obsessing with details. It's easier for me to remember details that are presented as bullet points. I have a hard time remembering info from texts. I am very good at foreign languages and find it rather easy to get the accent down. I also have thing for writing and reading. However, I don't have the patience to read a book in which nothing is happening for 20 pages.

Another sag merc here. In the first house. I remember i used to have a very active mind when i was younger. I have a thing for reading and writing too. But i absolutely love love love writing down my opinions and personal experience based on the given topic. Sometimes i even get swayed away from the topic.

But lately i find myself keeping my thoughts to myself. Probably because my mercury retro-ed to my 12th house. My ideas and opinions sometimes rush out soo fast that i stutter a little bit. lol. But still, people still tell me i have very very strong opinions. And i didnt notice that at all. I thought i was very withdrawn. I also have mercury sextile jupiter in libra, which maybe increases the influence of my mercury.

Alot of people tell me i think alot. Judging from the outside, probably has to do with my mercury-asc conjunction. Mercury is prominent in my chart.

Sun in Scorpio
Moon in Taurus
Asc in Sagittarius

Cancer mercury here who does the exact same thing. Quite honestly, when I do it, its warranted. Because some people when they're arguing will preach something that completely contradicts something else they preached like a week ago.

I'm also a gemini with sag rising and I've learned to appreciate it (merc in taurus) a great deal. I'm also very visual and can think/express in metaphors. I write poetry, love nature, it has a lot of benefits. Everyone who knows me considers me very bright and smart.. certainly not "slow.". hehe

i have mercury in pisces in the fifth
i dont think i express my self very clearly. i think that could be because i dont reach to a conclusion very quickly. i think about the smallest thing for hours before i make a decision(i also have moon in pisces in the fifth, but not conj mercury). actually i think im a little clearer in my head now. i was too dependant on others decisions earlier, but i think my work forced me to think on my own. and ever since i have been quite proud of my decisions because i have recieved a lot of appreciation fr my work....

i have a really good memory when it comes to things im interested in or things that are important. all the rest i can forget in less than a second!!

" When people speak to me I can easily pick on their moods (especially over the phone, and even online ), hidden motives, what was purposely left unsaid, and what-have-you"

same here.

around 5-7 years back i was'nt a very confident talker. i was always scared that i would not say the right thing....i think that still happens sometimes....i guess that was one reason why i was such a quiet person..i think i have more confidence now but can still do better.....and like someone over here mentioned i too can really drive myself nuts fr having said somethin stupid!!...i'd rather stay quiet than say something stupid.

i think i'm more of a listener than a talker.
