I think people forget that the Phoenix, symbol of transformation, rebirth is the highest form of Scorpio.

Great thread. So much to reply to.

First of all, the reason people forget the phoenix aspect of scorpio is bec it doesnt really fit many scorpios. But as was said above, it may not be fair to compare associations of sign to planets based on current real world functioning of that sign. Btw, I am the first to say - look at the whole chart and not just at the sun sign. HOWEVER, the sun is the main event and aspects and transits to it will be felt by far more than anything else in terms of the basic sense of self and being - whether or not it manifests in outer events. Transits to the angles may manifest in events and be much less felt internally. Therefore, a core element of a planet - like transformation - in the case of pluto, should be in evidence in scorpio. If its not we have a problem.

Azalaksh - I think the asteroids relate to the signs and am working on some systematic approach. I definitely feel pallas and libra go together. Ive read more about pallas and it seems to be very involved in dualities and reconciling opposites. There is no other sign that represents that quality more than more than libra. Libra is an air sign and stronly intellectual. Venus as a rulership fits but neglects the intellectual aspect of libra.

I came across an interesting site that may solve the pluto problem:
http://www.guidingstar.com/Articles/Rulerships.html

This theory is kind of brilliant and makes alot of sense except for its neglect of the signs taurus through libra. The asteroids may be part of that solution. Giving each sign a dual rulership. This approach makes sense bec the energies of the planets as *singular rules* do not go far enough to describe the complexity and fullness of the signs. They only hone in on one aspect.

Associating pluto and aries in addition to scorpio fills in the gaps as far as the sense of "I-ness" and core sense of being and mission that go with pluto/sun and in my case pluto conjunct MC. These aspects are more externally focused, and aries issues of dominance and leadership/power are central. While pluto/moon/venus and probably pluto/IC/DSC aspects work more internally and in a scorpio way. In terms of sequence, aries can be seen as the end and the beginning which again fits pluto and its involvement with rebirth, endings and beginnings. This works well bec I do not associate a special sense of mission with scorpio. Scorpio "desires" not for a greater good or acclaim but for its security and the security and well being of its intimates. This is not a bad thing and its profound loyalty is truly unique and something society could not really do without. At least as an ideal in the world which it represents. Aries pursues goals for its sake and the goal's sake. Aries is unity and oneness and does not distinguish between sense of being and mission. They are the same and threats to a "mission" are threats to the core. This fits the plutonic response people with sun/pluto or MC/pluto have to being thwarted in some way. They also have ego, overconfidence and arrogance issues like many arians.

I also like the uranus as the solar ruler of aquarius and saturn as the lunar ruler. This represents the dilemma of the signs notorious emotional control issues. Which I am intimately familiar with as an aquarius. The other rulerships work well too. The solar and lunar aspects of the outer planets do work very differently when they are in aspect to the sun or moon.

I am not sure I see chiron and virgo though it does work better than any other sign. Maybe I dont understand virgo well enough though my father is a virgo sun and moon at exactly 6 degrees conjunct chiron in virgo. He has had a brilliant and magical career as a major innovator in his field and is a fellow at harvard. So chiron has magic and extraordinariness built in, I believe. Does that really go with virgo? Magic? It also has tragedy .,.,.though many virgos can be bitter and acutely aware of unfairnesses. What about Ceres and virgo?

Vesta is about committment, perhaps shared resources and maybe an organic feeling that you should belong together in synastry. Its not magical. Its natural, earthy, reasonable and feels right on a basic fit level. I have researched this in many couples charts and its always in aspect. As consistently as saturn. Virgo is not about committment in relationships particularly. It does fit somewhat with scorpio, and perhaps taurus in its basic security connotation. Alot of descriptions of it sound remarkably scorpio-like, emphasizing sexuality on the context of committment. The asteroids vesta, pallas, juno and ceres need a bit more research, thought and wider agreement on their meanings. They may fit with sections of the zodiac quadrants or elements instead of signs.

I prefer Ceres as ruler of Virgo myself. I wrote about that back in 2006.

Even the Virgo constellation was seen as Demeter by the Greeks.
