I always liked Anya's marriage vows from Buffy:

quote:
I Anya, promise to love you, to cherish you, to honor you, but not to obey you, of course, because that's anachronistic and misogynistic, and who do you think you are, like a sea captain or something?

Blah blah blah, misogynistic, blah blah... I do, however, entrust you with my heart. Take care of my heart, won't you, please? Take care of it, because it's all that I have, and if you let me, I'll take care of your heart, too. I'll protect it and tend to it, like a little stray. Wait, no. Like a little mangy stray that needs a home.

I only hope I can match this at my own wedding.

Just want to make sure that you realise I'm not referring to stay at home moms or housewives... I would be a stay at home mom and look after the kids if my husband and I both agreed to it and we'd be financially comfortable that way. That's quite a different thing to choking back your true feelings and opinions in order to give your husband complete control even if he's wrong. I think women who choose to stay at home and raise their children are doing a GREAT job and aren't necessarily 'subservient' by the definition I mean here... so I hope you don't think that I'm bashing stay at home moms or housewives, because that's not the case at all.

The BDSM thing was getting a bit off topic.

I just want to say again that this thread is NOT about women who choose to stay at home - it's nothing to do with anything that simple. So I'm sorry if you felt offended in any way Eleanore, but staying at home and being a housewife is not the issue - so please don't be offended. The point I wanted to discuss was about women who end up doing something that they DON'T want to do.
