Nice one LTTThis reminds me of a class I took in college, 'The Psychology of Love.'
Astrology aside though, there are SOOOO many variables. I think for some people we look for a person who reminds us of a beloved parent, uncle, older brother, etc..
I know in most of my long term relationships, there was an element of my Dad there, whether it be looks, or just the protective factor.
As far as smell, this is true and not true.
My childrens father has this certain smell, it's like baby powder. It emanates from him within, he doesn't wear it. He can be sweaty and dirty, and I (maybe just me?) can still smell it. It seems to come from his forearms, and still to this day, it is a comforting, enticing smell, even though we are estranged. Maybe that smell was so strong to me, to encourage us to mate? I don't know.
But another example is, a man in which I was involved with for 7 months. I always liked this man very much. He was very good looking, but just a family friend. Until a time when we were both single. We started dating, and the first time we kissed, his smell was "off." It was really quite troubling to me, because everything else was so good. It was hard to kiss him, and I'm sure he could sense my hesitance. It wasn't bad breath or anything that I can describe, other than "off."
But I liked him so much, that I convinced myself that it was fine, and before long, IT WAS! In fact, I got used to his smell, and ended up liking it.
The relationship ended, pretty badly, I might add, but it was really great while it lasted.
Some excellent poetry in there as well.
