I just found out that Elizabeth Kostova, author of the book, The Historian, which is a #1 bestseller right now, is going to be at the Book Passage this week! She will talk about the book for 1 hour and then do signings.

The Book Passage told me that I *cannot* bring my own book to be signed by her; I can only have her sign a book that I buy from directly from them and I must show my receipt before she signs it.

I find that pretty unfair. Is this a custom practice when authors speak/do signings at bookstores all over the country?

Yes, I believe this is customary. The point of a visiting author is to generate sales of the book.

It would still be fun to go and hear her speak! That book is on my list of must-reads. Did you like it?

Hi Trillian ~

I see. Well I bet most people who are going already have the book/have been reading it. Yes, I still want to go, although I already had a class scheduled for that night which now I will have to forfeit to go to see Kostova.

I haven't finished the book yet; it's 642 pages. It is good, very long, a lot of detail, and pretty fascinating. Please let me know when you read it so we can discuss it!

I just met her tonight and she signed my book!!! She is really, really nice and pretty!!! She seems about the same age as me. She also signed a postcard for me.

The entire staff at the bookstore was really, really nice. They weren't strict or picky at all about whether or not I bought the book from them. I guess on the phone when I called, they have to say that I have to buy their book if I want it signed.

I asked her if she knew if they would make a movie of the book and she said over a month ago, a movie deal was signed and she is very pleased with who is going to make the movie. (I can't remember the name of the company).

It took her 10 years to write this book.

She was fronted $2.5 million advance for it!

I also told her I feel that Vlad Tepes is alive somewhere out there, and that he is watching me. She laughed and said, "good, good!"

Nephthys, I am thrilled to hear that you had a wonderful experience meeting her. That's awesome...

Customary, artlovesdawn, but not necessary, and in this case, the author turned out to be quite generous. I'm happy to hear it, and perhaps that is more common than not.

I can't completely disagree with you; we live in a consumer society, where marketing pervades just about everything. One of the most offensive examples, to me, is sports figures charging for autographs; at least with an author you go away with a book.

But I'm not sure I would characterize people as being completely gullible...sometimes we just want what we want. We are more gullible when buying the poison at McDonalds that's been well-marketed, than a book that will at least enrich us in some way.

It's a piece of a part of the whole, which we've created, and it sometimes makes my head spin.

Well, I promise when my novels are published and I hit the road on tour, that I will be generous to anyone who enjoyed them so much that she would make the journey to see me in person.

Still haven't bought that book, Nephthys, as I have a huge stack already waiting for me and little time to read, but I will, I will!

Now, why do you think Vlad is following you?

McDonalds!!

Because in the book they are searching for the truth about Vlad the Impaler, and he seems to know they are looking for him..........whoever seems to be researching him seems to either get killed or mysteriously disappears. If Vlad the Impaler is still alive today, and knows I am reading the book..........well then...... !
