Can someone help me figure out what this means? I am VERY confused.

Last night I dreamed that I was in my Mother's living room standing at her antique desk. An old phone (remember the old, black, hardwired phones that weighed about 1,000 pounds? one of those) appeared and started ringing. I picked it up and it was one of the technicians from work looking for cable information. When I turned my head a computer was there and I gave him the info while having a typical "work" conversation - "It'll just take a few seconds for me to look that up", etc. He said, "I need your help with this". I turn around and I'm standing right outside an old graveyard (short wrought iron fence with the little spiky things on top. Head stones leaning this way and that). I'm standing well outside the short fence leaning my memo pad on a concrete block that was a well or that was hollowed out for some reason (I just remember things being in there that caught my eye every once in a while). Every so often I catch a person walking inside the fence out of the corner of my eye. None of this is particularly frightening to me. I glance over every once in a while, but mostly keep right on looking at my memo pad and stuff. On one glance over there a bunch of skeletons (maybe 5 - 7) carrying either a body or another skeleton start coming rather quickly towards the fence. Luckily, a company truck was right there and I jumped in the truck and locked the doors. I put up the window just in time for a skeleton to jump up on the running board and start yelling about "but she can't leave. I want to control her." Not in a spooky, scary voice, but almost a cartoonish whiney high voice. The van started and I backed up and there was a police officer directing traffic directly in front of the truck. I pulled forward, missed hitting the officer, and turned out onto the road. The right hand part of my vision was blocked so I could only see the left side of the road (and, therefore, could not see the graveyard any more). I could still hear that last skeleton complaining about how she wanted to be in control of me when I woke up.

The skeletons weren't scary "real" looking skeletons. I mean they were real enough, but the "feeling" I got off them was more puppet or stop-motion Ray Harryhausen-esque than evil risen from the grave coming to get you undead.

A weird thing is at no time during this dream was I scared - really truly scared. During most of the dream I found my circumstances - unusual, perhaps slightly unsettling. But, I scare easily and I wasn't scared - not during or after the dream. The end of the dream was spooky and creepy and a little frightning. But, where I would normally be terrified and panicked both during and after the dream, I found myself a little creeped out by the whole "I want to control her""I want to be in charge of her" thing. It didn't bother me as much as I think it should have, or normally would have.

I know this is just a blur of thoughts, so I will be happy to clarify anything for anyone. But, I would love to hear the Knowflakes thoughts on this dream. I woke up from it at midnight last night. Went right back to sleep and now it is after Noon the next day and it's only JUST starting to fade - if it's sticking around this long, I figure my subconcious really wants me to know something.

Okay shamrock ...

Let me start with a few simple questions.

How is work these days?

Are you busy or perhaps feel overworked?

Is there some sort of concern about the ending of this job?

Have your boundaries been violated somehow - perhaps an overflow of work that is now upon your shoulders?

As you can see, my first thoughts about this dream revolve around work issues. This may or may not be the case, but I have to start somewhere!

Wow, Ra! You are extremely perceptive. You are correct on all counts.

Busy/Overworked.
Our company was bought out last year. Many were laid off, including one from our department. Just after she got laid off, the husband of another in my department became very ill and she is out to take care of him most of the time. Plus, it's summer, so at least one person is out on vacation every week. Therefore, a seven person department is down to 3 (or 4, if we're lucky) most of the time with no end in sight. -- That's a big YES. (Oh and besides that, I'm in school for my CIS degree - so add my obsession with perfect grades to the overworked/stressed feeling)

Ending of the job.
Another yes. There are constant rumors of layoffs. Every quarter we hear rumors about the numbers that are to be laid off, and we are always told that my department is a target. That's a big, yes.

Violated boundries.
We all do basically the same thing in my department, however, we are each responsible for a different area. And, there is one person who is responsible for all of the programming. This is a high stress, high workflow job - not difficult per se, just a lot going on. We rotate that every 6 months. I've had it for the last 6. The girl who was supposed to start it May 1st REALLY doesn't want to do the job, so she has played sick and taken half days and vacation days for most of the month - so now I am responsible (as her back up) for both her job and mine. She's finally coming in on Monday and, frankly, she won't have to worry about the job and calling in sick anymore, because I'm going to strangle her {only half joking here}. Right now she is working with her doctor to arrange for (an unnecessary) hysterectomy so that she can have the summer off. (I say unnecessary, because she said that her doctor gave her pills that would take care of her problem and she doesn't want to take them - she'd rather just have the summer off (these are her words, by the way - not just my interpretation of events)). --- I feel used and abused. Besides the fact that this woman is the most rude, most rotten, most self serving creature you would ever have the displeasure to meet. I really do love my job, it's just that some people make it so unpleasant to do.

Sorry for being so long winded (as I usually am) (And, to anyone who has managed to read this far without falling into a coma --thanks for letting me vent

Hi Shamrock!

I am glad those questions spurred some answers! Did you want me to outline some of the symbolism that led to those questions, or can you see it, now that it has been put into context?

I would LOVE it if you wouldn't mind.

I had the general idea right when I was first considering the dream, but I don't always trust myself where symbolism is concerned. And, I would be very interested to see it from your perspective, because I just know that there is probably stuff I overlooked when thinking about it myself.

Thanks!

The main symbols relating to my questions are the skeletons, the fence, and the graveyard.

Skeletons can have many meanings, but as this dream seemed centered around work, they take the meaning of being overworked or with a "skeleton" crew. The skeleton saying "I want to control her" seems to go right along with that.

The fence symbolizes boundaries. So when the skeletons quickly approach the fence, and then you, I translate that as work (or overwork) being put upon you when it normally would not be.

The graveyard is, of course, a place of endings, therefore my question about the ending of your job. But you are outside the graveyard, which indicates that your job is not yet "dead". The people entering the graveyard probably represent those who are being laid off, and the work they did appropriately manifests as skeletons coming from the graveyard - to you.

That is really about it for the main symbols.
