Anyway, we walked in and there were a bunch of people and we got separated in the crowd. She was way ahead of me but still in sight when she turned around, looking scared. She seemed to see something that I couldn't see. I hurried, shoving people out of my way a couple of times and ran to the area she was looking at and attacked whatever it was that seemed to hold her in terror.

Suddenly, I couldn't breathe, and I fell, though I continued to fight feebly. It felt a bit like I was caught in something of a whirlwind, though that's just the closest I can describe it as. I woke up with a difficulty to breathe (very unusual for me) and my heart racing.

Any idea what this means?

My first impression is that she says she's fine but that there is something really bothering her. Your dream certainly seems to suggest this, unless your roomie represents someone else or an aspect of yourself. The dream suggests that someone (you or her) is feeling a great deal of anxiety, perhaps even panic (whirlwind/hard to breathe/heart racing).
