This post is in response to lilithpluto's dream/experience. I thought I would post it here for easier and more general reference. This technique begins as an exercise in imagination and auto-hypnosis which, if properly executed, can launch you into a full-fledged OBE/astral projection.
--- First, look around the room and notice the contents, the details.
--- Lie down on your back, hands to the side, palms up, no pillow if possible. Relax.
--- As you exhale, feel your body becoming heavy. With each exhalation, feel the weight of your body sinking more and more into the mattress or floor. Focus on your chest and shoulders. Feel them become heavier with each breath out.
--- Begin telling yourself (in thought, not words) that you cannot move your arms. Do this repeatedly. Tell yourself that you cannot feel your legs. Do this repeatedly. Tell yourself you cannot move your body. Do this until you have no will to move.
--- Beginning with your toes, tell yourself that you cannot feel them. Do this repeatedly. Visualize your feet without them. When you can no longer feel them and they have "disappeared", direct your attention to your feet and repeat the process. You cannot feel them - they have "disappeared". Move next to your lower legs, then upper legs. Then move to your fingers, then hands, then lower arms, then upper arms. Visualize your body with no arms and no legs.
--- Now begin to feel yourself becoming lighter. Feel yourself as feather light.
--- Imagine what the back of your head would look like if it were floating just above you. Really visualize it. See your hair and neck.
--- Now visualize what your surroundings would look like if you were floating, face up, a few feet above your body. Look around with your mind's eye (don't physically move!). Visualize this in as much detail as possible. Remember the things in the room and visualize them.
--- Move your mind/imagination back into your physical body and visualize what your floating body would look like as it hovers a few feet above you.
--- Move your mind/imagination into your floating body and again visualize your surroundings, as if face up. This time, imagine/visualize yourself turning over so that you are looking at your physical body from a few feet up. Visualize it.
--- At this point, continue to move your perspective/mind between your physical body and your floating body. Look up at yourself, then look down at yourself. Do this slowly, take your time.
--- At some point, choose your floating self and feel yourself float upwards, the distance increasing between you and your physical body.
--- Look around, go where you will.
I usually fall asleep while "disappearing" my legs.
These are general guidelines and parts may be tweaked to accommodate individual ability. Much of it has to do with fully relaxing the body and consciously inducing the hypnogogic state (mind awake, body asleep). Most people hold more tension in their bodies than they realize, so the first few steps are important and may take a little time. Others will have little problem quickly moving through those steps. That goes for all of the steps … some will require more or less attention and time, it depends upon the individual. Also, it is possible to spontaneously project at any point in the process. If this happens (there will be no doubt, you will know), go with it.
Good luck and have fun!
