Born in Oklahoma. Lived all over the US. Now I live in British Columbia, Canada. I love traveling and can't seem to find the desire to stop. This place is so special, it may just be the one that keeps me. (Then I'll just travel part of the time.)Hey Firestar...I lived in the San Luis Valley. I lived in Del Norte, but wrote for newspapers in Creede, South Fork, Monte Vista, Alamosa and some others. You are from Alamosa, I think. Great area. I really liked it there. I spent tons of time in Creede. IP: Logged |

Firestar...that's so gut-wrenching.That's quite the pic you took there, though.. I'm Irish and Welsh, with ascestral roots that lead back to Mary Queen of Scotts. My sister did a geneology report on our family name a while ago. We're also descendants of horse theives on the other side of the family...apparently our family was run out of England back in the 17th century lol...I find that funny, I don't know why.
Alas, I'm a full blooded Canadian now, born and raised in Western Canada. The Canadian Rockies are something EVERYONE should experience at least once in their lives. IP: Logged |

I agree, lioneye. I've driven down and back the Alaska Hwy, turning off on the Cassiar Hwy to travel down the Rockies and it's stunningly beautiful. I wouldn't mind moving there someday.. I've even considered it at times when the political climate in this country gets freaky..IP: Logged |

That's funny, Harpyr...I've always said that one day, if things get too scary in civilization, I'm going to pick up and move to the mountains and live off the land. So much unchartered up here. I like you. I'd love it if you were to move up here. I'm actually about 4 hours away from Jasper by car. 15 minutes by plane, though. I've heard that many people actually have what feels like a religious experience while beholding the Canadian Rockies. It does have a way of putting things in perspective, that's for sure. Hi again everyone. Thanks for your comments... These pictures are listed on that page, but way down at the bottom. There are tons of pictures, not only of the fire but of countries around the world. http://www.karlgrobl.com/fire/index.htm lioneye...yeah, it was pretty scarey to see fire that big. I still cry going through there every day. Fish!!...you gotta be kidding! This is a small world in deed. I was born in Alamosa, went to college there, but I lived in Monte Vista and went to Monte Vista HS. My sister worked for the Journal for a long time. When were you there?

We sound alot alike. I've been even preparing for this possibility by learning about permaculture. Gonna be heading back to college in the fall to study enviromental science too. Heck even if things don't get all weird (yeah, like they aren't weird already LOL) in civilization, I may move to the remote uncharted land of Canada anyway. I really miss Alaska in alot of ways, but it was the darkness that got to me. I figure a good compromise would be in Canada. I would get the winter I miss so dearly with the lights and all but more sunlight. Perhaps when my partner and I are done with school we'll be heading up your way! IP: Logged |

Hey Firestar. I moved to Del Norte in November of 85 and went to work for the Mineral County Miner and South Fork Tines right away. I stayed until February of 87. By that time, the Haynes's had bought the Journal and a bunch of other papers, so I got to work on all of them. It was great. I really loved it there. Too much snow, though, and that is saying something from a person who lives in Canada. It snowed 4 inches in my driveway in Del Norte one year in mid-May. Still, a very cool place.IP: Logged |

Fish...Well, you would absolutely love it there now because it doesn't snow like it used to. In fact, they are in the middle of a very scary draught. I'm actually moving back next year some time. I miss my family. I graduated in '79. You were definitely there while I lived there. My family owned the A&W in Monte Vista. I know the Haynes. My sister's name is Diana, she worked for them as an ad manager, I believe. Send me an email...firestar@cox.net. ok?IP: Logged | |
