Teens accused of killing homeless man 'for fun'

HOLLY HILL, Florida (AP) -- Two Florida teenagers found a homeless man in the woods and beat and kicked him to death "to have something to do," according to Volusia County sheriff's investigators.

Christopher Scamahorn, 14, and Jeffery Spurgeon, 18, confessed to beating the 53-year-old victim with their fists and sticks and kicking him, sheriff's spokesman Brandon Haught said Sunday.

The pair were charged with murder Sunday. Spurgeon was being held without bail in Daytona Beach. Scamahorn taken to a juvenile jail.

The teens said they attacked the man "for fun" and "to have something to do," Haught said. They went back to the woods three times after the initial attack to beat the man again, he said.

The victim was found Saturday, and the condition of the body indicated he had been dead for several days. An autopsy Sunday determined that the man died from blunt force trauma to the head and body, Haught said.

The victim's name has not been released.

"We're trying to find next of kin," Haught said Monday. "He apparently doesn't have any next of kin nearby."

Investigators said there may be more arrests.

Jesus Christ. Totally senseless? How about totally barbaric? "just looking for something to do"?!? I'm sure their parents will step forward any minute and assure us their babies are really just good kids at heart.

Please tell me the boys (and I use that term loosely) weren't white and the man black. Please.

Why, in God's name, should the color of their skins matter?!? Isn't it enough that these two youngsters had souls dead enough to think that beating a man was "fun" ?!? If they are white and the man black are you going to blame what they did on racism and the KKK? What if the boys were black and the man white? Would you even question if racism was a motive?

That is one of the things wrong with this world. We put race, sexuality, religion and politics in front of our humanity, instead of the other way around.

TINK - I apologize if that last post sounded like I was going off on you. I wasn't. It was just that what you said really struck a nerve. (I gotta watch those suckers.)

Peace and love to ya Tink.

Quite ok.

That story is enough to get anyone's dander up, isn't it?

Anyway it gave me a reason to reflect on my own reasons for posting that remark. So thank you.

I suppose to some degree it was because the murder took place in the south. That right there shows my own prejudices. (I'm a New England yankee)

the question of race is relevant because a 14 year old kid usually learns that kind of thing from a parent........
in this case apparently they despise indigent people.....
maybe they listen to rush limbaugh alot............

Wow Petron, that comment was totally uncalled for.

I am not even sure how you can infer they hated indigent people when there is no mention that it was a factor in the motive. In fact, they say in both articles Boredom was the motive, along with the fact that these kids (specifically two of them) were delinquints.

Scamahorn attended Riverview Learning Center, an alternative school for students with disciplinary problems.

Spurgeon said his son recently dropped out of Mainland High School and worked with him on a roofing job Thursday and Friday. He unsuccessfully tried to talk his son into joining the military.

Jeffery Spurgeon II was being held without bail at the branch jail in Daytona Beach, and Scamahorn was booked into a juvenile jail.

which comment?

wow pidaua ...are you saying you consider "boredom" a 'motive' for murder?

that sounds like the first "excuse" a stupid teen would think of...

do you really think that if there had been some other kid or a real estate agent in those woods they would have beat him to death from boredom....?

no....if there were any other kind of person there these punks wouldve been to scared for their own dumb selves to do anything....

Assuming those two lack a conscience (and I think that's safe to assume) why wouldn't boredom qualify as a motive? Sounds good enough to me. Not to mention the well-known fact that a homeless man is a weak and easy target.

But ya know ... right and wrong ... it's all relative, right?

And I'm going to go out on limb here and say that many children today learn as much from society at large as they do from their parents. Remember, it takes a village!

well boredom may have been a precipitating factor in this case but an attack like that is carried out for the thrill of having power over another......(and yes gang mentality)

but i doubt if they would have done anything to some 12 year old girl walking thru their woods......

Hey..open up your head..I am NOT saying that I thought boredom was a valid motive, the damn COPS said it. When the kids were interviewed THEY said they were bored and decided to kill the guy.

Unfortunately, we live in a society where there are some human beings that are depraved and they do horrible things. They are called socipaths. They don't care about how things appear or what seems like a valid motive. They are evil, mean worms that enjoy causing pain.

The comment of yours that I said was uncalled for was your insinuation that watching Rush Limbaugh would somehow predispose one to kill a poor or homeless person. That is just sick.

As far as having to despise someone in order to kill them, well that is just WRONG.

Having grown up in a law enforcement family as well as having been married to a forensic commander, I have SEEN crime scenes where a stranger killed another for the THRILL. Not because they hated women or because they despised the person, they were just plain sick and evil.

There are also many cases of kids- under the age of 16- the kill other children in a brutal and senseless matter.

Do you remember the case of the kids that were around 9-11 years of age that raped and murdered a little 5 year old girl? They got off because a homeless mans sperm was found on the body. The guy happened upon the body and got excited (as sick as that sounds) and you can imagine what he did, but he did not rape her. The boys did it, but because of their age they didn't produce valid seamen.

My point is, that kids can do wretched things and they learn not just from their parents, but from society as a whole- just like what TINK said.

apparently youve never heard rush drone on and on and on about homeless people....
it seems like every week he feels the need to "explain why" homeless people are homeless....

and btw its these stupid kids who are claiming boredom as a 'motive'.......the cops are just telling us what they said....they say they did it for "fun"....

In the boys' minds "boredom" was a good excuse. That's all that really matters. They did not have constructive outlets for their time so they felt that beating a poor homeless soul was fine. "Idle hands are the devil's playground." And I have to agree with you Tink, the thought of what they might have done to a young girl makes my skin crawl.

And Tink, I completely understand the knee jerk reaction towards the race issue. As a proud Southerner, it irks me when people hear "South" and think "racism." To be quite honest with you, I've seen racism since I was a kid, but I never saw as much racism as I did when I visited friends in Pennsylvania.

I've heard Rush drone on and on about the homeless. I've heard him drone on and on about drug users too. Although, come to think about it, I haven't heard one of those tirades in a while. But I digress. Rush can be very heartless when pontificating about the homeless. It's easy to get uppity and self-righteous about them. Easy targets all around.

Deep breath pid. No, I don't think Rush Limbaugh alone could persuade anyone into murdering a homeless man. But if I were the sort who would get off on beating a homeless man I would probably have my dial set to Rush, not Franken.

On the other hand, if I were the kind of sicksonoffabitch who enjoyed burning the flag, spitting on vets, and other assorted obnoxious forms of minor treason, Franken would probably be my man.

*sigh* it takes a village of idiots

Well Petron, as the resident expert on Limbaugh and the one who obviously listens to Limbaugh all the time; how many homeless persons have you beaten up/killed?

Just more leftist BS hyperbole of the Clintonista variety. I remember when Commander Corruption attempted to blame the Oklahoma City bombing on Limbaugh and talk radio.

Isn't there some way you can spin this so it comes out Bush sucks, America sucks?

I don't consider them human....but beasts.

To bad we can't get rid of them all.

youre right pidaua if those kids had listened to rush limbaugh they would have immedietely claimed the man "accosted them" with "demands" for money......
these punks would have been more "afraid" of a little girl with an identity than some haggard old man they thought nobody cared about..........

and yeah jwhop i listen to limbaugh
except i'm not like timothy mcveigh going, "yeah man...rush is right...rush is right"
i only listen so i know what you'll be posting about later .....

i really hope you have a link to clintons quote naming rush limbaugh, that would be hilarious!!!.... (but please not some fluff piece written by newsmax ).......

you see it would take some1 like ann coulter to spin the OK city bombing .....

Your America is beautiful statement lacks any credibility coming from someone who, so far as I've seen here, has never expressed any sentiment about America that wasn't extremely negative in the past. Save the BS for the tourists.

quote:
Daschle, of course, isn’t the first Democratic officeholder to try and blunt Limbaugh’s effectiveness; then-President Bill Clinton blamed conservative radio hosts in the wake of the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing. Back then, most of the liberal press showed no alarm that such comments could be seen as a threat to free expression and the First Amendment. Will they give Tom Daschle’s dark invective a similar free pass?

#32 of the top 50 unethical acts of the Clinton Administration:
In a shameless political move President Clinton holds a press conference after the bombing in Oklahoma City where he blames the bombing on hate speech from "talk radio". He later clarified his statement stating that he didn't mean Rush Limbaugh, etc. (yeah sure). http://www.geocities.com/CapitolHill/9694/Hook/ioHooktop50
