Oh yes, our ties with the Arabs (And I think the Indians too) is an old one.(Almost like a millenia I think) They gave us the spices and curry...and we gave them ivory, slaves, etc from our errr..."spoils of war". . My mother says there were even Sultanates along the East African Coast (mostly Arab). Then of course the Portuguese wanted in on everything and they expelled them.(Ala Reconquista )

*edit* Had a convo wit mom and gramps today and my gramps said that Swahili was a language created by the Arabs in order to make themselves better understood by the Africans living along the coast....very interesting. It eventually moved into the Congo (he says) and there is a distinct difference between the Swahili spoken in the Congo and that of the East Africans (Kenya,Tanzania, etc).

I shall definately ask, i know Bangladesh has a better view of India than Pakistan. As for Ukraine we actually have a lot of people from india working there right now, but back in the soviet days we looooveeed you guys! I think well i know my mom always told me India is great (she adores it herself and also wanted to visit) and right now my friends love it too (the ones who live in Ukraine i mean). So i think Ukranian view of India is rather nice. Ill ask my bf though, he was born there he came here when he was 5 I dunno how good he can tell you all that. I have many Bengali friends ill ask them if you'd like

From a business perspective:
My company has business in India. Several of my co-worker's have gone there and ive seen all the pictures of the animals in the streets and such..Plus i have worked with people from India and I too think they are very decent hardworking people. One gal i worked with educated me to many spiritual topics. This was many years ago.
What people here say is they don't have the infrastructure to grow. China however does and is expanding quite a bit.

OMG dont ask me what comes to mind with india right now. lol.

ok well before I tell the story and make my blood pressure high again let me tell you what I GENERALLY think of India: Colorful bazaars, people speaking tons of different languages around the country, indian movies hehe, the taj mahal of course, and paneer lots of it. paneer pakoras, palak paneer and such. hehe seems like its in everything. and also sikhs for some reason--particularly punjabi sikhs. most of the indians i know are from punjab and quite a few are sikhs. one of my former professors is a punjabi Sikh and he is the nicest most brightest man ever. Unfortunately I also think abt the army and I know we've talked abt this subject so i wont bring it up again. I have only seen the indian army in one way (Kashmir) becoz I lived there, Im sure they do lots of other things that I dont know about.

NOW I can tell you what I think abt India lately. lol. There is this indian guy who has been calling me everyday at work for the past two months. in the beginning he used to ask for patricia (the woman who used to work there before me). I keep telling him shes not here (i switched depts two months ago so this job is not new for me but the position is in a different location, and i took someone elses position who has left). anyway he wouldnt believe me and called back everyday. Then I asked him what did he want? Becoz this is a business office and we dont take unsolicited calls here. And he said ... he wants to sell some sort of movie ticket package for the year blah blah so I said look Im not interested, sorry, please dont call back again. But he wouldnt stop and every single day I told him Patricia is not here and please dont call back! as nicely as I could.

Today, in the four hours of morning before I take my lunch break, he called twelve times. TWELVE TIMES!!!

Around the eighth time I got really rude with him I Said look why dont u leave me alone??? Do you understand what NO means?? Why are you being such a jerk? then he says Honey why are you so upset baby bla blah then I really lost it I said hey listen what kind of professional man sitting in an office flirts with a woman like that? Maybe u dont understand english so ill tell u in hindi: I said Kutte ke bache peecha na chora to tangein tor dun gi (lol sorry for those who this is graphic to--it basically translates as, you son of a dog (b!tch), if you dont stop bothering me ill break your legs!). Then I hung up and went and told my boss about it and he said he would alert security becoz this qualifies as harrassment at my workplace. So anyways while he was doing that, this guy calls again and i pick up my phone again (I cant NOT pick up becoz he calls from different numbers and I have to pick up a number which I Dont recognize--it could be important).

So he starts cussing me out in very bad terms: bhench0d etc (mother f*cker sister f*cker etc. ) in hindi. Then I say look, I reported you to my boss so your calls will be monitored from now on. So please stop calling otherwise the police will trace your number and you will be punished for harrassment.

Then he hung up but kept calling again and again. I didnt pick up and thot even if its important it will have to go to voicemail I Cant stand this. At this point I was so angry that I thought Id faint becoz my blood pressure was sky high and sometimes that happens to me.

Then a student who works in our office as a secretary came in and I told him what happened. He said he has a good hunch who it is. He says that Patricia (the woman who worked there before me) had an ex husband who was indian and had married her for the green card and left her afterwards. He said her ex husband would call her now and then and they would fight a lot even tho theyre not married he was stalking her or not leaving her alone or something and this guy might well be the same. OMG I WAS SO ANGRY WHEN I FOUND OUT. Ive never been so angry in my life, not when I was beaten or called racist names by two neanderthal boys lol. NEVER!!! WHAT KIND OF PPL DO THIS CR@P???

GOD im still so upset. This all happened this morning. I feel sick to my stomach and Ive lost my appetite and have two huge pimples on my face after being pimple-less for months. lol. I am refusing to talk to any of my friends right now becoz that Venus in Aries is going to go off on someone and lose me a friend if I talk to anyone.

So anyways if you guys have any suggestions on what I shud do let me know. BTW Cancerrg, I know you have some personal planets in fire, Leo and Aries I believe, do you think you would have reacted the same way as I did or he did?

OH MY FREAKING GOD!!! WHAT A SICK ASSSSHOOOLEEE!!!! Wow you got guts missy and right on for telling him off (actually thats exactly how i do things which is also a bit disturbing but i stopped being surprised re: our placements) BUT WOW OH MY that would seriously upset me for a while. I let things like that get to me...

Ahhh I see you let things like that get to you too...i totally understand 100 percent! Man oh man! Im sorry to hear that *bug warm hug* hope that helps and yes i know the want to talk to someone but also knowing if u do ull attack them lol. Watch some tv, mellow out, maybe try to think of something to do read or something just to get away. Or the BEST thing is to sleep. I know with me i still wake up angry but at least it makes more sense.

I think you have done all you can from now on every time he calls just hang up or call the cops seriously get them involved. Now i dont have any personal planets in fire but in react EXACTLY how you did so thats that. Feel much much much much better, best wishes to you and try to relax. Drink tea (im a big lover of tea lol) solves anything and everything!

::::BTW Cancerrg, I know you have some personal planets in fire, Leo and Aries I believe, do you think you would have reacted the same way as I did or he did?
::::

infact , i would have reacted more violently .
you gave him so many chances which i am sure i would not have .
but well this is something that i have experienced with my boss too (we both have changed org. now but we are in contact) he would be more patient than i, again even if he had some professional problem ( in a way like yours ,this was bcos of your job , na! ) he would be cool within minutes which i think i would never be able to .
if someone starts a ego fight , i'll go to any lengths . shall come back later to it !

regarding your reaction , i think you waited a bit more , you could have reported this way earlier .
i dont know about your repo with your boss , i might have told him this very initially in a very casual way .
you might not have done it cos you never knew, it could go to this length .so what you did was very very correct.

you know , i am in sales , and these curses (btw, i feel you could have avoided using the exact words , yaar tumahri jubaan se ache nahi lagte , meri se lagte hai so edit it if you feel like ) are very very common during our review meetings but then even i dont let my boss use it for me .
i dont simply tolerate it . and thats also the reason why i normally speak very very cautiously and with command during those times .(though i myself use it a lot but ofcourse i do it within limits , i never do it with or around my female friends , infact i am quite chivalrous, typical cancerian )

nothing do with your situation though , i think a person should always know and understand his/her power and nuisance value .
and i seriously think gems loose out on the power (or may be we cancers give too much value to ego ) part .i feel i have figured out why ?
what do you two think? (ok , sorry four actually)

and forget about the incident cos these things always happen . go have a chocolate cake (i know you are on diet )(btw, i think luke warm water in the morning is a better way to control your fat and oil composition in body , it helps glow your skin too )
what do i do at these times , i normally keep silent , go sit in the pqark all alone or sleep . sometimes i browse the net too.

and avoid paneer ! here too people are so fond of paneer that they put it in chowmien too ! gross!

hy BUD(or rather buddy)
ah, about ukraine , things that i wont find on official sites , i am lokking for those details , i would rather the ukrainian world view ,w hat do you think the world thinks of you ?

and i had one more question to you and all (sg and dulce too ) whta do you think the kind of impression that india makes among ,say , your friend circle or your neighbourhood (i am excluding your views cos i already know that ) like thirteen pointed out the infrastructure part , its kind of true .

Perhaps a Pluto transit? Ever since pluto hit my ASC ruler I've been getting a voice for myself...no more pushover (although still introverted by nature).

Hmmm, around the people I know...I wouldn't know. They're still pretty ignorant about Mozambique.LOL ( They're like "Where's that?") I mean, I'm sure they know what India is....just not alot about it. They usually think: third world, mystical, snake charmers, and lets not forget bellydancers (which is actually Middle Eastern ).

Now the people back at home (Mocambique...or East Africa in general) may have a better grasp of it. As far as I know from the last time I was there, I think the two cultures have mixed pretty well. I'm sure back in the day (especially colonial times) there was a bit of resentment on both sides...mostly because of jobs. But I don't think its really ever been that bad. Like I said before, my grandfather dined with an Indian friend and his wife on ocassion (I think they worked together a long time ago...before my grandfather retired on account of disability, now he just farms). My grandfather's favorite food by the Indians is the chipatis (sp?) and the Tandoori. Our food is spicy like Indian food so maybe that's why its popular back at home. (Btw, my favorite dish is the Chicken Korma ).

The only controversy I've heard one time (from my dad)was of some Musicians in either Kenya or Tanzania plagarizing Indian music and replacing the Hindi lyrics with Swahili ones. Although, this has happened here in the U.S. too. (Anyone remember the song by Truth Hurts and Rakim the rapper)

Wow thats a complicated question. Considerign we almost had a civil war its much to say we dont agree on our world views. Each person's world view is different. It has changed a lot since I left, but still they try to modernize and be more American which I dont like personally because they just loose their authenticity. They love Indian movies ill tell you that, play them all the time.

quote:

Okay since 85% of my friends are either Indian or Bengali i wont bother there lol. The rest are kind of indifferent and dont have much of an opinion, except for the few that are fascinated. In my neighborhood no one really cares for India they arent big on politics really.

{quote]hey're still pretty ignorant about Mozambique.LOL ( They're like "Where's that?")[/quote]

Yea seriously before the Orange Revolution everyone's like huh Ukraine wat? Me: its Russia w.e. LOL

Most Russians/Ukis cant handle Indian food, our food is not spicy at all actually a lot of my friends find it bland but i like it. Despite my ulcer (shouldnt be eating spices) i love Indian food but sometimes its too much, i usually stick to Turkish food. Or Egyptian food (i never knew how good rice mixed with meat wrapped in steamed grape leaves could be till i tried it now im hooked).

:::but still they try to modernize and be more American which I dont like personally because they just loose their authenticity.:::

well , thats something that i truly dislike too .
i say, appreciate but always be yourself .
this is one problem that we face too . indiscrimanate amercanism !
especially in places like , our north eastern part( its real heaven starting from darjeling -you must have heard of the tea ! , this area actually borders bangladesh and bhutan) they have complete identity crisis (this is also the place where the long lost tribes of the first migrating jews have found their roots -recent dna tests proved which was earlier just suspected , this too is a reason of israeli fondness for us ) thats why they seem to embrace western style of life , actually , one more reason to it is , its just one of the few places in india beside kashmir that has matriarchal (is that the correct spelling? ) society that too helps .

so what would you do if you visited my home ? the community , i belong to, is actually known for oily greasy spicy foods ?
you too would need a diet !

i hope dulce would be ok ! she can handle our food !
so shall i just invite dulce only?
