Muslims do not eat pork, as Islamic culture deems the pig to be an impure animal.

My best friend is a muslim(Afghani). I think being in this country kind of corrupted her. But then again it's not my fault she ate pork that my sister cooked. She loved it LOL.

tink you are not pestering at all. the beards dont have an outright religious significance despite what anyone may say. they are only considered holy because the prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) had one himself and anything that the prophet did we muslims like to copy and besides, it is said that Moses and Jesus also had beards, so it is considered the sign of the 'wise man'. the recurring bearded man being wise symbol shows up in movie after movie as well. george lucas uses it quite a bit.

I see. A nod to the archetype.

Is there a passage in the Koran or Hadith that refers to Muhammed having a beard?

Mmmm...hockey players, during the playoffs, don't shave...

----

On another related thought, it's interesting to see how a man's laziness or lack of means created a wizened stereotype. I don't imagine it was easy to shave back then.

My Arien roommate LOVES pork! It's like weird to me how much of a preference it is.

Yeah, AG, and this Aries hates pork, so it all evens out.

Alot of so called cultural or religious taboos came about because the eating of certain things...such as pig/pork....led to the aquiring of horrible diseases caused by unsafe handling and cooking of meat. It was very hard in times past to not contaminate cooked food with things that had touched it while raw...sanitation was not easy before running water and soap.
Raw pork often had parasites in it(as did most meat)...but the Trichina parasite is very nasty.
Hard to kill by just cooking.
I have noticed that most of the taboo meats are the ones that have/had the highest chance of zoonosis transfer of diseases. So goes the main...but forgotten reasons for taboos and so called unclean meats/animals.

Hm. Someone told me before that a devout Muslim's man's beard was like a devout Muslim woman's hijab - it was for modesty's sake.

But I guess it's all down to interpretation.
