Upcoming Book Rips Dan RatherMorley Safer was no friend of Dan Rather when the two worked together on CBS’ "60 Minutes,” according to a new unauthorized bio of Rather.
In the book "Lone Star” – due out in September – author Alan Weisman writes that Safer "has not been a friend of Rather’s for years, since their days in Vietnam.”
The animosity dates back to when Rather replaced Safer soon after Safer’s report about a platoon of Marines burning a Vietnamese village.
"When Rather replaced me . . . he went to a group of Marines and said, ‘If I were you guys, I would have shot him.’ Or words to that effect,” Safer told Weisman. "And that my report should never have gone on their air.”
Asked if Rather had dumped on Safer to curry favor with the Marines, Safer told Weisman: "Who the hell knows why?”
Safer isn’t the only CBS staffer to rip Rather in the biography, according to a report on the book in the New York Post.
Co-workers took Rather to task for his critical report on George Bush’s service with the Air National Guard.
"In my opinion he was guilty of journalistic malpractice,” former CBS News president Ed Joyce told Weisman.
