They award the prize on this to a showman instead of an actual climate researcher?

Typical.

Al Gore even screwed up reporting on the research.

Plus, going so far as the "peace prize," Gore was an outspoken proponent in the Gulf War, voted for the Neutron Bomb; B-2 bomber; Trident II , MX and midgetman missiles, and backed Ronald Reagan's Star Wars. Many of these were destructive of the environment, too.

Then again, so is Gore's jet, and arguably his house. Not to mention that as a politician he helped undermine the endangered species act in the snail darter case, fought in the construction of a nuclear reactor in his home state, and pushed for a "free trade agreement" on timber with NO conservation measures. Even Rolling Stone reported Gore as being less for the Kyoto Treaty than Bush (granted, this had more to do with Bush's relationship with Enron at the time that had ulterior motives for wanting Bush to support it).

Yet none of this would disqualify him. I bet finding out he smoked pot in college or nude pix of him in Penthouse would though. (Ewww...my mind just went to a scary visual place just now...)

And did OJ Simpson, reported as having an estimated IQ of 89, become a member of MENSA, too?

So now, after awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Yasser Arafat...indisputably a terrorist and Jimmy Carter, a man with the blood of hundreds of thousands on his hands; the man who ushered in the era of Radical Islamic terrorism, this same group awards the "peace prize" to the totem pole, he of the wooden head, Algore.

And what is Algore's claim to fame? He flies around the world in private jets burning thousands of tons of jet fuel, living in a home which consumes 20 times the electricity as the average American home and attempts to sell others "carbon credits" he manufactures out of thin air to enrich himself....while he harangues the rest of us to cut back on carbon based energy use.

Classic DO AS I SAY, NOT AS I DO behavior.

The Nobel Peace Prize has become a political statement and has therefore become worthless...as a symbol of anything worthwhile.

Completely agree! Of late it is nothing more than politically manipulated drama!

The Nobel Peace Prize should be given to people who have given their lives over to the cause of peace, those who have made great sacrifices.

I don't want to go into Gore's voting record on the environment and endangered species because I believe that people can be enlightened and change, so even if he has not always been an environmental advocate that does not mean he cannot become one... But my concern is with things such as his current house and his private jet usage. He certainly has enough money to make changes to his house so it is more earth-friendly and yet he does not. W has a more eco-friendly house than Gore!

I really don't believe Gore is very "green-minded" after setting up those horrendous, wasteful concerts all over the world this past summer. Fighting global climate problems by creating huge concerts starring people who are horrible wasters of energy and natural resources? And asking Madonna, who has one of the largest carbon footprints ever, to write the theme song? Huh?! If musicians want to contribute, have them record some PSAs and air them on MTV, VH1, and the CW. Better yet, donate money to researchers! If you want to preserve the South Pole, why use it for a rock show?

It is good to have publicity for global climate change and ecology, but I don't think this is appropriate.

Wall Street Journal said what I am thinking about this one:

Not Nobel Winners
October 13, 2007; Page A10

In Olso yesterday, the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize was not awarded to the Burmese monks whose defiance against, and brutalization at the hands of, the country's military junta in recent weeks captured the attention of the Free World.

The prize was also not awarded to Morgan Tsvangirai, Arthur Mutambara and other Zimbabwe opposition leaders who were arrested and in some cases beaten by police earlier this year while protesting peacefully against dictator Robert Mugabe.

Or to Father Nguyen Van Ly, a Catholic priest in Vietnam arrested this year and sentenced to eight years in prison for helping the pro-democracy group Block 8406.

Or to Wajeha al-Huwaider and Fawzia al-Uyyouni, co-founders of the League of Demanders of Women's Right to Drive Cars in Saudi Arabia, who are waging a modest struggle with grand ambitions to secure basic rights for women in that Muslim country.

Or to Colombian President Álvaro Uribe, who has fought tirelessly to end the violence wrought by left-wing terrorists and drug lords in his country.

Or to Garry Kasparov and the several hundred Russians who were arrested in April, and are continually harassed, for resisting President Vladimir Putin's slide toward authoritarian rule.

Or to the people of Iraq, who bravely work to rebuild and reunite their country amid constant threats to themselves and their families from terrorists who deliberately target civilians.

Or to Presidents Viktor Yushchenko and Mikheil Saakashvili who, despite the efforts of the Kremlin to undermine their young states, stayed true to the spirit of the peaceful "color" revolutions they led in Ukraine and Georgia and showed that democracy can put down deep roots in Russia's backyard.

Or to Britain's Tony Blair, Ireland's Bertie Ahern and the voters of Northern Ireland, who in March were able to set aside decades of hatred to establish joint Catholic-Protestant rule in Northern Ireland.

Or to thousands of Chinese bloggers who run the risk of arrest by trying to bring uncensored information to their countrymen.

Or to scholar and activist Saad Eddin Ibrahim, jailed presidential candidate Ayman Nour and other democracy campaigners in Egypt.

Or, posthumously, to lawmakers Walid Eido, Pierre Gemayel, Antoine Ghanem, Rafik Hariri, George Hawi and Gibran Tueni; journalist Samir Kassir; and other Lebanese citizens who've been assassinated since 2005 for their efforts to free their country from Syrian control.

Or to the Reverend Phillip Buck; Pastor Chun Ki Won and his organization, Durihana; Tim Peters and his Helping Hands Korea; and Liberty in North Korea, who help North Korean refugees escape to safety in free nations.

These men and women put their own lives and livelihoods at risk by working to rid the world of violence and oppression. Let us hope they survive the coming year so that the Nobel Prize Committee might consider them for the 2008 award.

You see, I don't give a damn how many jets, private or commercial Algore flies on. I don't give a damn how big his home, the number of SUV's parked in his driveway for he and his followers, the amount of money Algore has or how he makes money...so long as it's a legal enterprise.

I do however object to being lectured by this bloviating airhead on a subject he knows absolutely nothing about....while he is attempting to make rules, regulations, policies and procedures for everyone else on planet earth. Rules, regulations, policies and procedures he himself and other bloviating airheads and morons DO NOT OBSERVE in their own daily lives. Hello John Edwards.

( I had to look up bloviating)

I agree, there`s a lot of "do as I say, not as I do" in that camp.

Hmmm lalalinda

Please name 5 accomplishments of Algore during his years in the House and Senate of the United States and/or his 8 years as VP.

Please list his accomplishments in the private sector which would be an indication he actually knows anything about the US economy, business and what makes it work.

I'll help you get started by listing the Gore Report, also known as The White House Commission on Aviation Safety and Security.

This report commissioned by Kommander Korruption was finalized in 1997 and included provisions which would have secured commercial aircraft cockpit doors with steel reinforcement to prevent aircraft hijackings...ala, September 11, 2001.

This report sat on the desk of Kommander Korruption gathering dust for 4 years and was never implemented by the most corrupt president in American history.

Bloviating is such a nice descriptive word Juni.
