* Millions in Europe lose power as cold weather increases demand - 5 Nov 06
Strong winds, heavy snows, and blizzards swept through Sweden and Finland this week, then
extended south across parts of Germany and into Poland.

The cold spell created a sudden surge in demand, bringing extensive power blackouts across
parts of Western Europe. The power went out across Germany and then, one by one, parts of
eastern France, Belgium, Italy and Spain plunged into darkness, reaching as far as Madrid and
Valencia. More than 5 million homes lost power in France, almost 10% of the country's
population. The UK also experienced cold and icy conditions.

* Antarctic temperatures coldest since 1979 - 2 Oct 06 - A satellite has detected record losses
of ozone over Antarctica this year, the European Space Agency (ESA) said on Monday.

"This year's extreme loss of ozone can be explained by the temperatures above Antarctica reaching
the lowest recorded in the area since 1979," ESA Atmospheric Engineer Claus Zehner said.

The article then blathers on about chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), apparently in an attempt to place
the blame on the CFCs instead of the low temperatures.

6.0 Gulf Quake Felt From La. to Fla. - 10 Sep 06 - The largest earthquake to
strike the eastern Gulf of Mexico in the last 30 years sent shock waves from Louisiana
to southwest Florida Sunday.

The magnitude 6.0 earthquake, centered about 260 miles southwest of Tampa, was too
small to trigger a tsunami or dangerous waves, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Scientists said it was the largest and most widely felt of more than a dozen earthquakes
recorded in the region in three decades.

An unusual location for earthquake activity, scientists recorded a magnitude 5.2 temblor
in the same location on Feb. 10.

* Seasonal hurricane forecast reduced –– again
3 Sep 06 - William Gray’’s forecasting team at the Colorado State University
has lowered their 2006 hurricane season forecast for the second time in a month.
Now just 13 named storms are expected, with 7 becoming hurricanes. (This is
still above average.)

Last year, the Atlantic hurricane season produced a record 28 storms, including
15 hurricanes. Seven of these hurricanes were considered "major."

One of the factors that favors the development of tropical storms is warmer ocean
water (above 26.5C). This season, seas surface temperatures are cooler than last
year and there has been a surprising amount of dry air.

(9.1 meters) high, which could submerge many parts of the 2.5-square-mile
island, where the highest point is around 18ft.

According to a National Weather Service forecaster, Ioke is the fifth-strongest
storm ever seen in the Central Pacific.

Ioke is also one of the longest-sustained storms in world history, having
remained at Category 4 for a week. Current winds remain at a steady speed

# Snow Cuts off Villages in Algeria –– 26 Feb 06 - Heavy snow has cut off villages and
clogged key arteries leading away from the Algerian capital Algiers for several days,
national police said on Sunday. Djelfa, which had 70cm, was "totally paralysed", the
Algerian Press Agency reported.

At least 60cm of snow blanketed villages near Djelfa and Medea, respectively 270km
and 80km south of Algiers. Only donkeys and mules could ply the roads around the villages.

* New Siberian cold wave hits Russia Georgia – Buildings collapsing beneath the snow - 2 Feb 06 –
Temperatures plunged to record lows in the far eastern part of Russia yesterday, sweeping as far as Moscow .

In Sochi, a normally balmy resort city on the Black Sea coast, 14,000 inhabitants were without electricity

Down the Black Sea coast in Georgia the roofs of four houses collapsed under the snow in Kutaisi.
A shopping center collapsed on Thursday, and part of the city court collapsed on Wednesday.

In the western part of Georgia, heavy snow blocked roads and cut off villages from the outside world.
The snow measured between 1.5 and two meters deep (4.9 to 6.5 feet), with more falling. A train from

Bitter cold kills 589 in Ukraine - 03 Feb 06 - Some 589 people have died after bitterly cold
weather swept through the Ukraine over a 15-day period. The heating system in the city of Alchevsk
failed on January 22, leaving hundreds of buildings, including schools and hospitals, without heat. The
Emergency Situations Ministry said the breakdown was primarily the result of long-term neglect of
Alchevsk's heating pipes. "About 70 percent of Ukraine's heating system is worn out and needs to be
renovated, while about a quarter of it is in critical condition and must be replaced immediately," the
2 February issue of the "Kyiv Post" quoted Vasyl Kvashuk from the Emergency Situations Ministry
as saying.

Gas consumption in the Ukraine has increased dramatically as the inefficient heating systems have
failed to cope with the conditions.

11,000 Turkish villages cut off by snow
Hungry wolves prowl the streets - 27 Jan 06 –
Some 11,000 small villages and enclaves have been cut off from road transport and several hundred
are without electricity or telephone services, as heavy snow and cold winds keep a tight grip on Turkey.

Hungry wolves failing to find food in the mountains have reportedly started prowling the streets of
Gevaç in Van province. (This sounds almost medieval, doesn’t it?) People said they were worried
about three separate wolf sightings; most made sure they were at home before darkness set in. They
said if officials left some food in areas far from residential neighborhoods, the wolves would not bother
people.

As snow continued to fall on Istanbul , roads leading to several suburbs on the European side of the
Bosporus, which cuts through Istanbul , were blocked. In parts of Istanbul , snow depth had reached
28 cm. Some 3,000 municipal employees worked round the clock to clean up the snow. The Turkish
Red Crescent provided food and blankets to around 1,200 people who remained in their cars.

Snowfall was continuing in the Beylikdüzü, Bakırköy, Eminönü and Boğaz regions of the city on
Thursday, with officials warning that the precipitation would be followed by ice.

Severe storms in the Marmara Sea are preventing ships from entering the region, with one ship sinking
in Şile.

In Ankara , the country's capital, the mayor said that if natural gas were disrupted (a real fear), residents
would be left without any heating fuel.

Officials are forecasting more freezing weather.

The 19,000 "prominent" scientists aren't necessarily scientists, and don't necessarily know anything about what they were signing.

quote:
Though OISM's signatories did include reputable scientists, it also included dentists, nutritionists and others with no expertise in climatalogy; the only requirement for signing on was a bachelors degree in science. In fact, OISM's screening process was so lax that for a time the list also included a number of gag names added by environmentalists, including Ginger Spice and Michael J. Fox. The OISM petition also came under fire for being deceptively packaged: The petition was accompanied by an article purporting to debunk global warming that was formatted to look as though it had been published in the journal of the respected National Academy of Sciences. The resemblance was so close that the NAS issued a public statement that the OISM petition "does not reflect the conclusions of expert reports of the Academy." http://www.fair.org/activism/stossel-tampering.html

I've read the reports from the NAS, and they tend to agree that the Earth is warming, and that further study is warranted. I'm trying to find for you the thread where this was discussed previously.

Oh...and don't think there aren't an equal amount of articles out there that support the theories behind Global Warming/Climate Change. Those before and after pictures of where glaciers once were are not Photoshopped.

I personally don't know the definitive answer on this issue, but I don't necessarily think it's one to disregard lightly.

Volcano, Not Global Warming Effects, May be Melting an Antarctic Glacier

Scientists have discovered a layer of volcanic ash and glass shards in Antarctica, evidence of an old eruption by a still active volcano that researchers believe may be contributing to the thinning of Antarctic glacial ice.

Hugh F.J. Corr and David G. Vaughan, two scientists with the British Antarctic Survey, recently published their discovery of the volcanic layer in the journal Nature Geoscience. The discovery is unique according to Dr. Vaughan. He said This is the first time we have seen a volcano beneath the ice sheet punch a hole through the ice sheet.

The volcano's heat could possibly be melting and thinning the ice and raising the speed of the Pine Island Glacier in West Antarctica.

But while the Pine Island Glacier may be thinning because of the volcano, it's highly unlikely the thinning of Antarcticas ice sheet as a whole can be blamed on hidden volcanoes. For one thing, Antarctica has very few active volcanoes. Most glacial scientists, including Dr. Vaughan himself, blame warmer ocean waters for glacial thinning in West Antarctica.

The ash and glass layer the scientists discovered was most likely deposited around the time of Alexander the Great. The eruption would have exploded upwards, pushing through hundreds of metres of ice, spraying ash and volcanic glass shards all over the land surrounding it. Two millennia of snows have covered the volcanic layer, but recent radar surveys found it.

In fact, radar teams discovered the layer in 2004 and 2005, but the reflected radar waves from the layer were so strong they thought it was actual bedrock. A more recent radar survey with improved equipment meant the team discovered the actual bedrock, and thus the layer above it.

The thickness of the ice above the layer mean that the scientists could date it to roughly 200 B.C., plus or minus 240 years or so. But the researchers think they can narrow it down more than that. From previous examinations of ice cores, they knew that a volcano had erupted in Antarctica some time around 325 B.C., although they had not known where the eruption had happened. Dr. Vaughan said: Were fairly confident this is the same eruption. Source is Environmental News Network

And yet another...

=======================================

Here's another interesting peice of hidden news

Unusual Winds Caused Arctic Ice Melts, Not Global Warming
October 5, 2007 - 09:36 ET

Assume for a moment that a new study by NASA proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that manmade global warming was indeed responsible for the recent ice melts in the Arctic. Think media would have reported it?

In reality, that's a bit of a trick question, for in the past several weeks, television newscasts, papers, and magazines have been filled with hysterical assertions about decreasing Arctic ice levels destined to cause imminent flooding to coastal regions around the world.

As such, it certainly was no surprise when NASA released a report Monday claiming "the rapid decline in winter perennial ice the past two years was caused by unusual winds," virtually no media outlets shared the information with the citizenry, and those that did still blamed the melting ice on - you guessed it - global warming.

The largely boycotted announcement out of NASA stated no such thing (emphasis added):

A team led by Son Nghiem of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., studied trends in Arctic perennial ice cover by combining data from NASA's Quick Scatterometer (QuikScat) satellite with a computing model based on observations of sea ice drift from the International Arctic Buoy Programme. QuikScat can identify and map different classes of sea ice, including older, thicker perennial ice and younger, thinner seasonal ice.

[...]
Nghiem said the rapid decline in winter perennial ice the past two years was caused by unusual winds. "Unusual atmospheric conditions set up wind patterns that compressed the sea ice, loaded it into the Transpolar Drift Stream and then sped its flow out of the Arctic," he said. When that sea ice reached lower latitudes, it rapidly melted in the warmer waters.

"The winds causing this trend in ice reduction were set up by an unusual pattern of atmospheric pressure that began at the beginning of this century," Nghiem said.

Hmmm. So, unusual winds pushed ice south into warmer waters causing the above average melt rates. That should be newsworthy, right?

Well, it clearly wasn't, as from a print perspective, only the New York Times and the Christian Science Monitor felt this matter to be at all important; no other major dailies thought this announcement to be something the public would care about.

Yet, even those papers skewed the study to make the results support the global warming myth. For instance, the Times' Andrew Revkin wrote Tuesday:

* The pace of change has far exceeded what had been estimated by almost all the simulations used to envision how the Arctic will respond to rising concentrations of greenhouse gases linked to global warming.
* Proponents of cuts in greenhouse gases cited the meltdown as proof that human activities are propelling a slide toward climate calamity
* Still, many of those scientists said they were becoming convinced that the system is heading toward a new, more watery state, and that human-caused global warming is playing a significant role.

The Monitor also used this report to advance global warming hysteria (emphasis added):

"While a number of natural factors have certainly contributed to the overall decline ... the effects of greenhouse warming are coming through loud and clear," notes Mark Serreze, a senior scientist at the Snow and Ice Data Center.

Maybe even more disappointing, the broadcast networks, which had been all over this supposed "record" Arctic ice melt a few weeks ago, completely ignored this announcement.

And, leading the pack for the most disgraceful performance regarding this matter was ABC's Sam Champion who did a story concerning Arctic ice on Tuesday's "Good Morning America" that absurdly omitted this NASA announcement Monday:

Now, in August, we showed you those record levels of the melt of the sea ice. The new information out from the National Snow and Ice Data Center, and those are the people who watch the ice all around the world, is that September levels are even lower and they also set a record. On this side of the screen, we're gonna show you generally an average from 1979 when we first started taking pictures with a satellite, all the way to about 2000. You can see the ice stays just about the same even though there is some melting there and almost runs all the way up to the Bering Strait.

This is a picture of the 2007 levels. Now take a look at the empty gap that goes all the way around here. That's what we're talking about. We're talking about the unprecedented melt of all that entire area. Now remember, that important sea ice is there. We believe it kind of regulates the global weather patterns and there's lots of it than ever before.

Out at the National Snow and Ice Data Center, their quote is that every summer, we melt more ice and it's just not getting replaced in the colder winter months because of the unusual amount of warm air that's still around the North Pole.

Nice job, Sam. Thanks for sharing.

As for the cable networks, only CNN thought this issue warranted air time, though not much. When "the most trusted name in news" finally got around to mentioning this study two days after the announcement, Jonathan Mann offered more fear than fact on Wednesday's "Your World Today":

This is big news. Literally news you can measure in miles and tons. News that's trouble for the environment. The Arctic has hit another milestone, or more accurately, you could say it's melted it. Less ice than ever measured before.

[...]

Look at this graph created by NASA. At first, the total of Arctic ice goes up and down year to year. But long-term, the total year-round ice has been going down ever since NASA started studying it by satellite. At first 10 percent per decade, then a whole lot faster.

And 2005 was the worst year, the previous record until just a few weeks ago when NASA saw ice was down by nearly 25 percent. It just about drops off the chart. That is a big, big thaw. The effect is to open up a million square miles or 2.5 million square kilometers of open water in a little less than 30 years. That's an area bigger than Greenland, up in the north, right next door.

To be fair, not all of it is melting. Some of it is actually moving, which is a little weird, too. Wind is pushing huge amounts of it to the west, and it is melting off there. That is still bad news though, because with less ice now, next year's thaw will probably be even bigger. Something to watch and worry about. Back to you.

That's all, folks: one sentence about this issue from all the cable news networks.

Yet, what might be even more disturbing about press coverage concerning polar ice is not just how media ignored something occurring in the Arctic that offerred a contrary explanation of recent melts, but also how what's happening in the Antarctic is similarly boycotted.

As Anthony Watts reported Wednesday:

The Arctic is almost as warm now as it was seventy years ago. Unsurprisingly, Arctic ice has diminished. But, as Polyakov et al.show, the long-term changes are "generally statistically insignificant". But there's more ice in Antarctica now. It seems that points more to a natural, cyclical variation on a global scale when one pole diminishes while another gains.

In fact, when you add up the total square kilometers of ice in the Arctic and the Antarctic, it is only five percent below normal.

Yep. Five percent.

As such, not only are there other explanations for what's happening to Arctic ice than the hysterical claims by media, the total picture at both poles is vastly less dire than what the press are leading the public to believe.

Why might that be?

I don't treat it as religion, and the Global Warming swindle video isn't there. Aside from this I don't know that there is a definitive answer. The raised temperature is a matter of record however, and has been tributed to various things including possibly man.

Your article above [NewsBusters] is from a Pro-Republican site who have just as much of an agenda in promoting the idea that Global Warming/Climate Change isn't real.

The one above that is more balanced, and states:

We are being lied to ... again and as usual.

Climate change is certainly happening here on our planet, but it is also happening on almost every planetary body in the solar system.

The poles on Mars are melting. Pluto, the most distant of our solar family, is heating up, even as it moves farther from the Sun in its eliptical orbit. Etc, etc.

How is this possible? Is my neighbor's SUV contributing to the shrinking Martian poles?

Think about it.

Maybe Al Gore is right and by buying carbon credits we can save the Universe!

Wake up America.

(and you were a great sport about it thank you

There are currently 500+ Videos listed at Google encompassing the Swindle theory quite well, I'm sure LTT will come up with an alternative working link soon.

I do apologize for having included an article from a site considered pro-republican in the midst of those 100's of links, LOL!

Anyone Reading Thus Far:
Regarding the planets and climate changes...
\\\ My point exactly, Thank you RA! ///

It seems to be a NATURAL phenomenon that has been happening across the entire universe for more years than all of our physical ages put together....

NOTE: This is not to say that I do not believe in keeping our earth clean and free from exhaust, trash, harmful substances, etc.
Because I very much do care what my children will breath and live in 50 years from today.

I simply do not believe the Global Warming Scam.

If you look through history (which tends to repeat itself) there are periods of time that our environment heats, followed by periods of time that our environment cools...
A continuous cycle that has not made any significant changes from the norm.

Wake up America.

Ahhhhh... Now here's a funny article that was just posted this morning THEY'RE OUT TO GET US!

The warming due to the Sun is one of the best anti-Global Warming theories out there. I haven't seen anything that disagrees with it.

That theory does in fact agree that our planet is warming, however. It's safe to say that if this is truly the case, then all the other fluff that is anti-Global Warming is as much of a "Swindle" as the pro-Global Warming stuff. There's at least the same amount of distruth on both sides of the issue, and amongst those with a credible scientific voice global warming is a given. It's just the causes that are in dispute.

This whole issue is fraught with deception simply because Conservatives believe that studies which prove Global Warming are just an attempt at control of the economy by the United Nations. They fear that being more "green" by controlling emissions will cripple business and economy. Oil prices are forcing the same issue anyway, so we're observing that humans can adapt.

I don't believe that any scientist who has come to the conclusion that there is Global Warming has done so in order to hatch a plot against humanity. I think that's an extremely poor assumption.

People of west have known to play divisive politics. But great scientists knows no politics. I think somewhere they have to meet.

When you see posts like "Algore lays another ice cube.." You just can't help but wonder "why is he being targetted? " He is not crying wolf for a political gain. He bumped across something and followed his heart passionately. People here especially leftists are trying to undermine him. Is it because they thought of the issue first (politics). Geez, they talk of Bible and all that and also carry the sin of pride and greed with them.

Is there a nation that is secular, peaceful and full of love? Or must I drop off the face of the planet earth

YFIS, I have to look at those lengthy article that you have posted when I get time. A quick note : I can google and provide you list of lakes that have dried up in many countries. Point is overall the temperature of earth has increased.

Americans do not want to discuss this issue because their economy is already slowed down because of oil issue. But I personally think that America can become a leader in the green sector too.

Why do you think diseases like cancer, autism etc has been on the rise in the USA? There is a correlation between human health and earth's health. We may be missing it but its a reality. We are all interconnected. On the inside we are all communists i.e equal.

Also scientifically after billions and billions of years the sun will get hotter and hotter before exploding and collapsing to a small point.
If the earth survives the exploding rays of the sun from that point on it will become cooler and cooler.

That could be the fate of the planet.

But right now its global warming with a capital G. Fortunately NASA is going to send a rocket soon to find the correlation between greenhouse gases and earths temperature.

I don't know if it got mentioned, but my favorite was how a summit on global warming had to be canceled because of an unexpected blizzard!

Weathermen do good just to predict what the weather will be like next WEEK.

I'm all for adapting, but the laws are pretty much useless at this point. I don't get why people think of governments and corporations as a dichotomy when they're actually more like wings on the same bird. And it doesn't matter if the system is capitalist or communist, it's still the same in that regard.

And Gore standing up for the environment is like Hitler standing up for the Jews.

Amen, Dervish.

At least some of the people are awakening.

We don't need oil for power, nor do we need nuclear, solar panels, wind turbines, hybrids, or ethanol. ALL of these should have been made obsolete decades ago! Each and every one is a scam to keep the powers-that-be in control.

This entire planet and society as we know it should be far different, and much better, than it is. Human history took a ridiculously ignorant turn for the worse when we ignored and suppressed Tesla.

Conspiracy "theory" ... it is just that, theory. Assumption based on limited knowledge. However, when a thing can be devised, tested, and repeatedly shown to exist, it is no longer theory, but fact.

In the early part of the last century, Tesla proved many of his theories to be fact beyond any shadow of a doubt. The powers-that-be erased (almost completely) him from history because of it. But the evidence for all of this man's great works could not be completely covered.

For instance, as reported by several newspapers at the time, a fantastic experiment was carried out. A car's engine was removed. Tesla built a small box with components from a local radio store and wired it to the car's electrical system. He pushed in a rod sticking out of the box and said, "We now have power." The car was driven to a speed of ninety miles per hour. This car was tested for two weeks by several industrialists.

In the end, because Tesla would not reveal the secrets within his box, the very poeple testing the machine said he must be in league with the devil because the whole thing was impossible. Tesla disconnected his box, and left.

It is documented, it happened, it was no "theory", conspiracy or otherwise.

It's not the general human population I feel are the problem. It's the governments, and the government within the government.

While I know what you are saying, LTT, We The People ARE the problem because We The People have allowed this to happen. When a handful of people can control and manipulate 300 million people, we have a serious problem. Of course, this is just an illusion created though fear and deceit, because there is no way that so many can be controlled by so few for any great length of time.

It is all going to implode some day, when We The People have had enough. The government is supposed to serve us, we are not supposed to serve the government.

We can only blame ourselves.

yep Ra, those Martian warming scientists haven't been able to convince their Martian brethren to give up their SUVs either.

Ditto the rest of the climate scientists on the other planets in the solar system.

What Big Al should be concentrating on is a Solar commission of scientists from all the planets to address the issue of system wide warming.

I fear Big Al is taking a very narrow and Earth provincial view.
