When I got my first set of tarot cards, for Christmas of 98, when I opened the present, it was from my sis, My mom said, "those should always be given as a present, as that is the Time you are ready for them."

Anyway, just wondering, if any of you, have ever heard that???

I've always heard that you aren't supposed to buy your own tarot...so I guess you'd have to wait for a present.

ArtLovesDawn,

I agree, any cards that didn't feel right, I gave to whoever wanted them.
You just KNOW...

If tarot cards are handed on from someone else who has used them ie generation to generation, as with the gypsies, they are supposed to be extremely special !!!!! I a mgonna give mine to our son, if he wants them- I feel he would be a very good reader.....

That's an awesome idea, my girls practice with my cards, they're pretty amazing, they know what all the cards mean, and now they're learning to focus on messages, along with the cards, they are 14 and 15, I did not push them into this, they were eager to learn.

We have a very special bond, and I thank the Creator, everyday for them, Our children, Our are Miracles. I've learned so much through them.

I personally have never heard the "myth". I feel I came upon my cards. I was shopping for a new book, and never having heard of Tarot before, I find the deck. I was compeled to buy them. I have many times since been given differents decks as gifts, but they never feel right to me. I guess for me, I was in control. ttfn

I`m sure it was when something awakened in me spiritualy?

I also bought a deck recently for my friend, although he has yet to use them,im sure he will, when he is ready.

I would have liked to have received my cards as a present. I have to believe that it does'nt matter how you get them. I say my Spiritguide prompted me to select the correct cards at the correct time for me!

Blessings, Dini

My first two decks I bought myself, despite my cousin's discouragement. She'd bought herself a deck and instructional books, and said the subject was too confusing for her.
The first deck was the Marsielles, and I disliked it very much. I don't know why, but I got a negative vibe form those cards. I decided to throw them away. The second deck was the Unicorn deck, which I liked very much. My sister loved it even more, and so I eventually gave it to her as a gift.
My third and current deck, is the Rider-Waite deck. My sister bought it as a gift, and its been with me for two years now. I love it, its been most insightful. I only read for my sisters, and have a peculiar way about it. Instead of following a formal spread, I lay out my cards in a pyramid spread of my own invention. I then use my inner voice to say whatever comes to mind, and it works. The girls (my sisters) claim I haven't been wrong yet
About mystical codes hidden in the cards, definatly. References to Numerology, astrology, and the Qabala. In my Rider-Waite deck, the High Priestess card hold a scripture wiht the word "TORA" and within the 10 of Penatales picture, is the Tree of Life.

Figures! I had to buy my own. My family doesn't even know what they are! I only pick one card on Saturday morning and see if it relates to my life at the time.

Yes, I have heard of this myth.

I'm not sure how this would work form me, as I was taught by the women of my family to read on regular playing cards. They waited until I was thirteen, as supposedly that is the traditional age.

Anyone heard that one? That you're supposed to learn at thirteen?

I've not heard that about thirteen./It's probably just a family tradition. I use tarot cards and playing cards as well. The only rule I follow is I'm the only person that touches them. they are so scarily accurate that I rarely use them.

Okay, what about this one (I'll be totally shocked if anyone has heard of this one) It was a real big thing in my family, that I heard from all the women:

"Never build a house of cards! It means you're a witch. Only a witch can build a house of cards."

I was strictly forbidden from doing this. But every now and then, I could catch one of them doing it in secret, and they would yell at me to leave the room. They also did spells and such in secret that I was not supposed to know about. (But I did know.)

None of them used tarot because they thought it was satanic. Only regular playing cards. Then when I grew up and moved out I could finally have my own tarot cards.

Then one day my mother came over, found them, fell over on my couch and started to cry. She said that the whole family was a bunch of witches and that she had tried so hard to keep me from it, but I had fallen into it anyway because it's in the blood, and that we are under a family curse and are all going to hell.

At which point I drove her to the nearist magick shop and introduced her to the Goddess.

She wasn't sure at first. She even asked me if I felt guilty, for bringing my own mother into such a place. But she came around. I loaded her up with books, and promply re-educated her. Now she's a practicing pagan, and so are my aunt and uncle.

Guilt and secrecy no longer hangs over my family. I broke our "curse."

But anyway- has anyone heard of the "building a house of cards means you're a witch" myth?

My tarot book says that given as a gift is good, but if you don't have anyone to give them to you, thats fine also. Just to buy your own. My mother gave me mine, but it was kind of a gift from my grandma and my mama.
