Are you guys interested in the I Ching? I find it fascinating! There are some things that I don't understand about it, though. Maybe we can discuss it here and offer opinions on readings? What do you think?

artlovesdawn,

Thank you for your reply. I use the online version, but it seems pretty accurate. I tried using coins and I don't think I throw them correctly LOL. What do you use?
I am curious about the interpretation. From what I have seen so far, sometimes the hexagrams matter, other times it is the changing lines that matter.
For instance, I never understood why a positive hexagram changes into another positive hexagram, but the changing lines are not so positive...
For example, hexagram 46 (Pushing upward), changing in hexagram 35 (Progress) and the changing lines were:

Change in the second place means:
If one is sincere,
It furthers one to bring even a small offering.
No blame.

Change in the third place means:
One pushes upward into an empty city.

Change in the fourth place means:
The king offers him Mount Ch'i.
Good fortune. No blame.

Change at the top means:
Pushing upward in darkness.
It furthers one
to be unremittingly persevering.

I use the Wilhelm translation btw and another one which seemed accurate to me, from www.dreamhawk.com
The question was whether someone has feelings for me; at a first glance, I would be tempted to say the answer is a pretty positive one; but all the lines hold a trick, except for the 4th one, which seems the most positive one...

Also, 2 negative hexagrams can have positive changing lines. I asked if I will be together with this person and I got Hexagram 12 (Standstill, Stagnation) changing to hexagram 23 (Splitting Apart), with the changing lines:

Change in the fourth place means:
He who acts at the command of the highest
Remains without blame.
Those of like mind partake of the blessing.

Change in the fifth place means:
Standstill is giving way.
Good fortune for the great man.
"What if it should fail, what if it should fail?"
In this way, he ties it to a cluster of mulberry shoots.

The first hexagram shows the current situation, this I can say... but I don't know what to make of the relating one (it can be linked to the past, the present and I guess, also the future... it is a long distance thing).

So there are times when the general meaning of the hexagrams sticks with me, other times, the lines are the ones more accurate. But is my approach to this wrong? I am still learning and I am sure I am making some mistakes.
Oh, and I have one more question. There are times when I just don't see the connection between my question and the I ching answer. I am thinking that maybe I am not always really focusing on the question and perhaps I have other thoughts in my mind - do you think the I Ching is saying something relating to my other thoughts?
I am curious about your opinions and I am looking forward to discuss these matters and learn from you!

Hello,

I haven't been around LL for a while but saw your thread and thought I would add my two cents worth.

I have a couple of I-Ching books and the coins, but I mainly use an I-Ching Oracle deck called the Tao Oracle.

Like you, I sometimes find that the card I pull does not relate to the question I have. This also occurs for me with another deck (The Sabian Symbols). So, I rationalised that in those situations, perhaps I wasn't meant to know the answer, or to even question it further.

But, here's what I found.......don't ask a question, just pull a card (or in your case, select an online hexagram with no question in mind. More times than not, you will receive an answer relating to the issue on your mind.

I generally say it like this:
"What is the message that I need to know today?"

Now, I said I mainly use the cards, but every now and again, after I've drawn my daily card, I will want to investigate it further to see if I am moving away or toward this hexagram (as life is ever-changing). This is when I will use my coins.

I toss the three coins together six times, to see if each line of the hexagram is changing. The Tao Oracle has a section that describes the difference of individual line changes.

In addition, at the completion of the tosses, I will note the new hexagram and look up the interpretation for it.

Applying this to your reading, izodesmozina it looks as though something you wanted to come to fruition is not evolving at all.....and even after a change......will not bring your desired result (that is of course that I'm assuming that separating is not what you were after).

Splitting Apart is interesting in itself because it talks about a separation, but it might just be temporary. Perhaps either party needs time out to gather their thoughts?

Perhaps you should take a look at the Tao Oracle deck....it has lovely artwork and is very easy to intuitively read. It might give you a greater depth of insight into the I-Ching.

with love

*bump*
