Hey everyone, I thought it would be helpful for us all to share with each other our tips and mottos that have advanced our reading skills.

It could be things you have learned yourself through practice or study, or things you learned from other readers or teachers, etc.

I'll start. There are 3 main mottos which have helped me more than anything else in my development as a tarot reader:

1. Read the cards, not the book

2. Ask the 'right' (eye-of-a-needle level specific) question

3. Make the spread fit the question, not the other way around (this often leads to you creating your own spreads, but I find it way more informative and easier to interpret, than trying to squeeze a question into a standard spread. If you have already employed 2. then you have a good, specific question in which you just have to break down into components, or 'positions')

And tip: Past, Present, Future spreads are really only good for overviews. They are good starting points for further investigation where you then employ 2. and 3.

Come share your mottos and tips. It doesn't matter what stage of development you are at with your reading, we can all benefit from considering our practice from different angles. Experimenting is good! Tarot is a personal journey and your relationship with your cards is intimate and unique to you.

Voix_de_la_Mer,

How have you been lately?

That's very good advice. thank you.
I try not to go-to the book much but some of my own interpretation away from traditional readings can get wordy. lol

I'll reread your advice and am bookmarking it.

It is so hard to believe I've only been at this just under 2 months. Aside from my home random exchanges. There's a lot of learning. I do like to synche into the read via the intuitive side. It's nice also that readers can assign cards their personal meanings ~ molding the card art like an artist does with molding clay.

I wonder why this board has much less activity. We have a lot of readers, I think?

Hi Moonmystic,

I'm OK thanks. A bit crippled just now with a poorly back, but fine really. How are you?

Under 2 months You are advancing very quickly then, I saw your astute interpretation on another thread. Yes, that is exactly what I mean: the cards paint a picture, therefore individual meanings can only take you so far. In order to link the cards into a coherent whole, we have to move beyond the individuality of them to see how they relate to each other.

I'm not sure why it's quiet in here. I guess people are just preferring to practice their skills rather than talk about them, or prefer to study alone?

Good thread! Hear are mine:
1. Dont ask the same thing over and over again.
2. Ask one question per reading - questions such as "what does X feel about me and will they contact" is two questions and requires two readings
3. Dont read or get a reading when feeling tired or upset
4. Be an ethical reader
5. When requesting a reading you need to be prepared for what you might not want to hear. As a reader you should not just tell the querent what they want to hear.
6. Dont expect tarot to make decisions for you

No quoting my posts please

Voix_de_la_Mer,
Must be the cold of winter in the bones? Can you try a heating pad? Hope your back feels better soon.
My legs but winter, indoor fitness - shin splints ugh. we're both Sol Aquas .. legs are part of our ares (shins iir). So brutally cold here lately.

Thank you. It is two months on the 17th. which reminds me, my orb os 17°17 .. so we're wide cnj Sun. We should start a Sisterhood of the ♒ Pants Chapter. lol

I'm learning the hard way in some ways but a few weks back I meditateed to my ancestors for their guidance, to ask if I was going right direction. I was told but forgot my ancestors guides wanted to meet me but might be frightening so they only would do so by agreement. A bit of time passed and the dream from one came. I really thought it was a spiritual attack, yet my ancestor was there to reassure me. So reading feels right. I even have Reader and Oracle in my mame. No kidding. The markings in my chart too so I'm listening to all my guidance. I love helping others too. It reminds me to forget my own struggles. Someone else may need that energy. Sorry to ramble.

Maybe we can get this board thriving again. Besides me, there's another 3-4 newbies. It's growing, I believe.

Thanks again and take good care of your back. I know about them too. It's awful in the cold. Hot shower may help too. Tubs can be tricky when back is bad.

Sending you wellness wishes.

@Teabags,

I agree with many of yours but for me, in the current times (besides I'm new) so many people feel like they are in a race with the clock. This period we are in now has a fated feeling for so many of the people in this world. Those questions asked (to some may may seem trivial) are very important to many in these times. I myself want to be of help. I'll possibly figure out the best rules for myself but I use integrity in my readings.
I should create rules ~ maybe in a few weeks I can configure the best way for me to use for a guilpdeline. I think the creativity allows us each to flow natural to our own way too.

Yes, creativity is importnat for sure, but it can lead to chaos at times. It'll be different for everyone, but I find that some parameters make readings clearer. I virtually always pull "wild cards" which don't have rigid positions in the reading, and they can offer additional insight or clarity to the defined positions.

For me, creativity really comes into play when you are linking the pieces of the story together. The former positioning and structuring of the reading is what frees me up creatively to be successful in honing in on the patterns.

I have an earth Moon though, so this may be why this method works better for me, and it's in Virgo which seeks patterns in a practical sense. Perhaps a reader with a water Moon could identify the patterns in a more abstract way without as much structure as I need.
