Personally, I don't quite understand the role of the moderators here if they can't call a debate or close a thread. Credit to Randall though, he has chosen knowledgeable moderators like Dean who also seem to have a strong interest in the section they "moderate".

Moderators can call a debate and close the thread.Randall does support the mods decision.
The crux of the problem may be what is hidden behind "free speech" (an eons old crutch)and what is stepping over the line of the Intention of Linda Goodman aka Lindaland.
Ignore it, encourage it or stop it seems the most reasonable steps of application to moderating. Simple but not easy.
God Bless the moderators and their Intentions!

quote:
Moon666Child, do you read all threads in your forums? Just curious. How do you define "another's space"?

Yes, I do read every thread, and every new response. If I am online, I do it as soon as it is posted. And when I log on each day, I spent time first going through all the responses made while I was away.

Talking about another's space, what I meant was to avoid personal attacks. Basically it is about giving respect when we disagree. Another thing is "do not post what may irk you". As an example, last week someone posted a crude joke, and wanted to edit this. I sent this person a message, and asked her would you like you kids to read through this? I didn't have to edit, she did.

More often than not we forget that we have people from different culture and different age group representing the forum.

Thank you for helping me before to understand what forums and all are about. It was kinda scary at first here.
And you really made me feel better when folks got on my case about posting about our website. I still do not understand why other folks are allowed and not me. But thanks anyhow.

maybe we're not strict enough, I've seen some garbage that I would have liked to delete, mostly when the proper respect is not observed.

But you Dean are a great moderator, you've helped me more than once. Just keep doing what you're doing cause you're doing it right

firmly placed boundaries are necessary if you dont want chaos.....I have learned that as a parent....Jeez have I ever?

But of course its human nature isnt it to bend, break the rules and for some to create chaos....always gonna happen that way guys.....I speak from experience......

Thanks guys! Hmm, lots of issues have been brought up. My view on deleting is that I won't unless it was in error or highly offensive, but Randall usually gets to those before I do. Nothing really bad's happened that I've noticed (touch wood). Yes, I don't want censorship as I believe more chaos can result if people aren't allowed free will, but ignoring isn't always the best solution. In this case, I'm just kinda waiting for it to go away. New cycles will come through. The Earth will continue to orbit.

Sue, I love Chaos. I wrote a program about it - http://www.megspace.com/science/porsche911/chaos/ . It's pretty simple, but I like it. Kinda looks like a forest. The thing I like most, is the underlying chaos with the button. Everytime you press it, it spawns more until it just feills the screen, but then the dots over-write everything again, but like, I didn't code that. Call it chaos, or bad programming But here, chaos could result from boundaries. Every rule is debatable huh? Like Juni said, "an eons old crutch". But I think overall decency prevails. Especially here.

Mystic Gemini, please play nice and not call other people names. Is something wrong? I never knew you to be mean. The only time I'm really angry without knowing why usually derives from an ailment that hides in my subconcsious. Sometimes I guess it feels good to vent frustrations, but name calling isn't so cool.

Heaps of Love to aLL,
Dean.

Dean, the job you do here is awesome.

Don't worry about reading all the posts, you'll drive yourself crazy. It gets quite busy in here! And you certainly do not need to respond to all of them either, there are plenty of people here to do that. (I don't read any of the sex strings either)

Keep that level, conscientious head of yours, and it will all work out. Just like you said, it's all a cycle that will play itself out. The Earth will continue to orbit.

And thanks for taking this forum ... you have done a far better job than I ever could have.

Thanks Ra and Randall, your words mean so much to me. I haven't talked to you guys in ages. Randall, I still didn't thank you for that compliment years back, about the way I wrote. I still think about that occassionally. So... thanks Ra, you're such a modest and humble guy.

SunChild, I think maybe you need to reinstall java. Javascripts might still work, but these require the virtual machine. Unforunately, the latest one seems to load slower than it used to, but is requried for other things like a chess site I go to. Also, you might want to think about trying a different browser. I use Mozilla which is cool. Mozilla Firefox and Opera seem to have weird problems, but you cuold tryu them too. You can reinstall IE if necessary from within the OS. From Add Remove programs, you can choose windows programs and won't require the build CD. Just some ideas to try out.

Best of Luck,
Dean.

Yeah, there are many people here that I haven't talked to in ages. I miss some of those old conversations and topics, and I know I have only scratched the surface with some people here ... perhaps some day, it just seems that life is so busy!

And Dean, I don't know what's going on around here with all the various personality conflicts but I agree with you, it seems rather silly. I didn't even realize anything was going on until I read this string ... some of the posts here surprised me for their strange negativity.

Hang in there ol' buddy! You can ride this wave out, no sweat.

Yeah, thanks mate. As they say here "It's all good".

Noreenz, I'm sorry I didn't reply to your questions. My wife was sick and took Monday and Tuesday off work, but she's very much better now, and the baby seemed to grow before our eyes today. She went to the doctor yesterday who allowed her to hear the heart beat for the first time. We find out the sex in a week or so which will be great. I went for a new job on Monday - the application was like three thousand words long! I was so relieved when that was over, and so wish I will get it. Fingers crossed

Dean.

Hey Ra, could I ask you a personal question? I always wondered about it from the breif conversations we had. Have you ever thought about studying Physics? I know their are a lot of cons, like money, time, money, etc. But don't you think it'd be cool? I was always dissuaded as everyone said it would be difficult, and I know there's hardly any money in it (over here anyway), but I always wondered you know? I think if you put your mind into it, you could pass it at any age. Well, I'm still dreamin of the future. I keep having this little side dream that my kids will pick up a fascination for science, and become more committed than I was, and the day they go to uni, maybe I could too, but I dunno. There's a lot of factors there. I'd love to do it for the shear enjoyment. To feel as though I've learnt life on the most fundamental level. I know there's heaps of books where people explain it for you, but to read the formulas like they do would be amazing.

Anyhow, I just wondered what you thought.

Dean.

Sue, re chaos, I'm not sure if this is going to prove anything, but I'll try. http://www.mathjmendl.org/chaos/#mset is about Mandelbrot's sets. It's a function that when mapped into itself give a result. The result is compared to four scenarios - like on an axis. When the result falls into an axis, you get a colour, hence the pretty pictures. Now, say the walls of the axis are rules. They are never reached, and yet, are chaotically ignored. Pictures result from a mapping of data like chaotic patterns may result from humans trying to follow a plan. Nah, I aint makin' sense.

Night night,
Dean.

I think very similarly to you, Dean, even the 'side dream' about your kids. Maybe someday.

This Mandelbrot set fractal is my absolute favorite ...

Right there in the middle, albeit sideways, I see the Buddha. How appropriate is that.
