JINAN, May 7 (Xinhua) -- Thousands of tourists and local residents witnessed a mirage of high clarity lasting for four hours off the shore of Penglai City in east China's Shandong Province on Sunday.

Mists rising on the shore created an image of a city, with modern high-rise buildings, broad city streets and bustling cars as well as crowds of people all clearly visible.

The city of Penglai had been soaked by two days of rain before the rare weather phenomenon occurred.

The mirage took place during the week-long Labor Day holiday. The small city received over 30,000 tourists on Sunday.

Experts said that many mirages have been recorded in Penglai, on the tip of Shandong Peninsula, throughout history, which made it known as a dwelling place of the gods.

They explained that a mirage is formed when moisture in the air becomes warmer than the temperature of sea water, which refracts rays of sunlight to create reflections of the landscape in the sky. Enditem

That's cool but I wonder if it was a reflection of the city or another dimension.

Okay, after seeing those photos and that it lasted for 4 hours, I'm thinking another dimension! This is very intriguing, thanks! for posting.

Mirages are VERY interesting/strange. I was reading an article about them in my 'BBC Focus' magazine the other day.

Could they be created by some very ancient recording device under the ocean? A message from another dimension? Other energy fields?

Some day, we will know.

Can't believe your eyes? Yes, that's Canada!
Mirage can give you a glimpse up north

Plain Dealer Reporter

Sam Lippert must have thought his mind snapped when Lake Erie, right before his naked eyes, evaporated to the size of a wide river.

But hundreds of other Clevelanders saw it too, keeping Lippert from the loony bin, and giving them a clear and detailed view of trees and buildings along the Canadian shore as if they were only three miles -- not the actual 50 -- across the lake.

The next day, on Aug. 13, 1906, The Plain Dealer ran a front-page story headlined: Mirage Affords Rare Spectacle.

"The whole sweep of the Canadian shore stood out as if less than three miles away," the story read, naming Lippert as the first person to see it.
