Oprah airs February 8th!
It's official!Oprah's special on The Secret will air February 8, 2007!
The show features Rhonda Byrne, Michael Beckwith, Jack Canfield, Lisa Nichols and James Ray. And because Oprah thought it was such a great show, they filmed another hour of footage for Oprah After the Show. I don't have a definite date on that one, so be sure to stay tuned and check your local listings. I'll also be sure to let you know once I find out more... After watching the show, be sure to tell Oprah what you think by hopping on her message board dedicated to The Secret or by emailing her directly.

I'm not surprised to see "the secret" on Oprah. Oprah both symbolizes and popularizes mainstream values. Now, you may say that the secret is not mainstream, that in fact it is esoteric, occult, or new age. Although the method of the secret, manifesting, is age old and highly prized, the MESSAGE that they profess is completely in line with mainstream capitalist values.The secret tells people how to get that house, that car, that money. It's all about the self. Why don't these people encourage people to manifest happiness, peace, relief of suffering? Maybe the money is just a lure to turn people onto to this sort of thinking, but I believe that manifesting itself is not a positive thing. Manifesting increases attachment and desire and therefore leads to greater suffering if these desires are not met. IP: Logged |

will surely throw

I dont get why "The Secret" is such a big deal? I bet it works as a great motivating tool but I dont like the idea that it's so commercial and that the creators are probably making a very nice profit off of common sense.Agree with you BR about the selfish aspect to it...Do you think "The Secret" will help the poor orphan kids in Africa living or rather dying with HIV/AIDS? "The Secret" isn't new, and not really much of a secret. Self-help books have existed quite a long time now, and many of the same ideas just get recycled. There's nothing really wrong with it, and I believe that different authors probably reach different audiences. I do understand the discomfort with people pushing "The Secret" as something new. I have not read the secret or watched it...Does it talk about karma
an eye for any eye
you get what you give...
the universal laws

yet, as you brought up cause and effect we brought this material world into existence
and we are responsible for it... we are supposed to work with God
and have reverence for this wonderful
World we created, to LOve and care for it as parents do. ... instead, what have we done

Father Sky and ALL... . in order to create this better
world, we must fix the wrongs

I don't think "The Secret" encourages mainstream capitalist values in a negative sense. I've heard some people gripe about that before (not here, in RL).
Point is, your desires always manifest, for better or worse. You can't force yourself from desire, you transcend it through your experiences. Desire isn't necessarily negative. An excess of attachment is; eg, I am nothing without this car.
Besides, the Universe is nothing if not prolific. Just think about it, even if only from a basic, natural perspective toward creating life.
So people want a house or a car or money. There are plenty of people who need those or similar things the world over. Should wealth or comfort be reserved only for a few? What about health? And like that.
Our world is material and we have certain material needs and, consequently, desires. If those aren't met and we are constantly struggling to meet them or worried about not meeting them, what time and effort do we devote to all things non-material? Just look back on history and the growth of the arts and sciences, etc. It's never a concidence.
The beautiful thing about this "secret" is that once you recognize your own power, you think beyond yourself. You find yourself in a comfortable place, perhaps for the first time. And then you think of others and how to help them; you can help manifest for others or simply for the Earth, etc. You have to have faith in what is happening and many people can only have faith in what they've tested for themselves, in their own lives. It's beautifully synchronistic.
Many teachings from the past speak of the same. Meet your own needs, materially and spiritually, and you will help meet the needs of others. Sure, the scales may have tipped too far to overindulgence for some or will eventually. Think of it as the Universal Bell Curve. Eventually, things will balance out. It just starts with each one of us. ------------------

I didn't see the show on Feb 8th, but she brought it up again after getting such a huge response to it. My friend and I now have the DVD! I'm going to watch it later today. I think she watched it last night after she got home from work. So I haven't been able to ask what she thought of it yet. IP: Logged |
