I am the rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys.

As the lily among thorns, so is my love among the daughters.

~ Song of Solomon 2:1,2

Generally recognized as a symbol of Royalty, connected particularly to the kings of France, and linked alternately with the Egyptian scarab, the Hebrew letters "Tau" (in which the first chapter of Genesis is said to be contained) and "Shin", the Zodiac signs Virgo and Scorpio, the lingam and the yoni (possibly the sexual/procreative act itself), the Holy Trinity, and The Three Nails of the Cross, the Fleur de Lis is considered an occult symbol of major importance.

"The use for ornamental or symbolic purposes of the stylised flower usually called fleur de lis is common to all eras and all civilisations. It is an essentially graphic theme found on Mesopotamian cylinders, Egyptian bas-reliefs, Mycenean potteries, Sassanid textiles, Gaulish coins, Mameluk coins, Indonesian clothes, Japanese emblems and Dogon totems."
(~Michel Pastoureau: Traité d'Héraldique)

Please share any stories or info you may have about this symbol.

This is a major symbol for the Boy Scouts. The picture may not cut and paste. Here's the website I'm quoting:
http://www.troop125bsa.com/emblem.htm

quote:
Becoming a Boy Scout

Scout Emblem

The three points of the trefoil stand for the three parts of the Scout Oath.
The shape of the Scout badge means that a Scout can point the right way in life as truly as does a compass in the field.
There are two stars on the badge. They symbolize truth and knowledge.
The eagle and shield stand for freedom and a Scout's readiness to defend that freedom.
The scroll bearing the Scout motto is turned up at the ends as a reminder that a Scout smiles as he does his duty.
The knot at the bottom of the scroll serves as a reminder of the Scout slogan, Do a Good Turn Daily.
Origin of the World Scouting Symbol
" Fleur-de-Lis"

In Scouting's early years, critics accused Baden-Powell of trying to turn boys into soldiers, holding up as evidence the Scout symbol, which they called "a spear-head, the emblem of battle and bloodshed". The Founder quickly replied, The crest is the "Fleur-de-Lis", a lily, the emblem of peace and purity.

In truth, he had chosen as Scouting's emblem the sign for the North Point, universally shown on maps, charts and compass cards, because "it points in the right direction (and upwards), turning neither to the right nor left, since these lead backward again..." Lady Baden-Powell added later, "It shows the true way to go."
Baden-Powell explained the origins of this sign. In the Middle Ages, mariner Flavio Gioja designed it to make the seaman's compass more reliable. In Italian, North was "Tramontana". Gioja used a capital "T" to mark it, and in deference to King Charles of Naples, whose crest was the Fleur-de-Lis, combined the letter with that emblem.
To explain the meaning of the Scout emblem, Baden-Powell said, "The two stars on the two side arms stand for the two eyes of the Wolf Cub having been opened before he became a Scout... The three points of the Fleur-de-Lis remind the Scout of the three points of the Scout's Promise..."

The Fleur de Lis is a common Christian symbol.

Joan of Arc carried a flag in battle with the Fleur de Lis symbol on it. Most of her paintings depict that.

I have a Rosary with a fleur de lis crucifix attached and many crucifixes are of a fleur de lis design. I have a couple of fleur crucifixes and one standing crucifix with the fleur de lis design.

The processional crucifixes carried at Mass are of fleur de lis design.

It denotes the royalty of Jesus as the Son of God/God

Here you see it on a Christian t-shirt logo

And I wonder whether it also has distant roots in sacred geometry?

Thank you for your replies.

BrightStar,

I don't know your friend.
Perhaps you could ask him/her to reply to this topic,
under your username or something?

Mirandee,

Clearly, the symbol has existed in many cultures, in many ages preceding the Christian era, and has only been adopted by the Christians, begining with the kings of France, who took it as a royal insignia. Joan of Arc, as you know, was a French warrior, much devoted to the Dauphin (and not, as she believed, to Christ, who was a pacifist). The fleur de lis was especially worn in France as a herald, by soldiers in battle. I did not know it is regarded by some as representing "the Royalty of Christ, as the Son of God". That's interesting. Thanks.

Yes, but Joan of Arc was a peasant, born into a peasant family, and therefore not allowed by law to wear or display the Fleur de Lis. It is said that the symbol was given to her by angels to carry into battle.

She paid for it with her life but she was one of the many people that God sent to clean up the corruption in the Church in the middle ages. Francis of Assisi, Francis de Sales and many more were called by God for that purpose.

I question the notion that Jesus was always under all circumstances a pacifist who never got angry. He never physically struck out at anyone so in those terms he was a pacifist. But that's another topic.

Very interesting, indeed.

I am noticing some coincidences but I have nothing with which to back them.

I doodle a lot. And I am in the home I grew up in right now, and as I was reading this post I looked at at a mural I painted, to see The Fleur de Lis; and common amongst things I always draw is the eye, like this at the bottom for example. Unfortunately, I have no examples of the flower in my machine.

For some reason I think there is a connection between the eye, maybe Third Eye and the Fleur de Lis?

I am just trouble-shooting...

I am sorry if the image is too big.

added: I didn't know the kind of flower I was drawing at the time.

Mirandee, thank you.

Bright Star... Thank you also.

I didn't dream this, but I had seen it while sitting in the office, and I got its image in my head and had to draw it. Well, I could have been dreaming because I was a little spaced out, but no, I was not sleeping when I got the image in my head, it just happened as usual.
