This is a question for Randall, AG, Ra, Sesame, and all other smart Knowflakes ~ YES you are *all* smart Knowflakes! I want to get a very good quality hand crank radio, but there are so many brands to choose from that I don't know which one? When I look at consumer reviews, 1/2 the consumers say a certain brand/model is good and others say it isn't. Consumer reports did a review in 2006 and they recommend the Grundig FR 200. But that could be "old news". There is the Grundig FR 200, FR 300, FR 400. There is also something called a Blackout Buddy, the FR 100, which you plug into your wall until there is a power outage. (different than a hand crank emergency radio). The great thing about these hand crank emergency radios is that they provide radio, weather, international radio, TV audio, cell phone recharging, flashlight, and alarm. I really want a *good quality* one. IF you guys know of a good brand & model, *please* let me know! Thanks! I really want to upgrade and update my earthquake/emergency kit ~ the So Cal fires are a red flag reminder to me. Also, I have been watching a lot of documentaries lately about global warming, gas shortages (due to restrictions of oil), etc. You get the idea. Thanks in advance for all your replies. IP: Logged |

Thanks! The Crane site has a brand called Freeplay so I'll have to look into that brand and model. *sigh* so many models and don't know which one to get? The homestead site, I didn't see anything about hand crank radios or emergency supplies, but tomorrow I'll peruse the site a little bit more. IP: Logged |

We have a little cheapo $20 one from Walgreens that works wonderfully! Same for a flashlight. We want to get a Grundig though! The little cheapo actually recharges batteries! So we can use them on the cell phone.------------------ "Heaven doesn't want me and Hell is afraid I'll take over and start a rehab for the damned!" ~Judgement Must Be Balanced With Compassion~ ~Do Not Seek Wealth From The Suffering, Or The Dire Needs Of Others~ ~Assumption Is The Bane Of Understanding~ ~ if you keep doing what you did, you'll keep getting what you got.~ Everything changes. Fayte,I am thinking of getting the Grundig FR 300. The silver one comes with a free mini 100 hand held radio, and free ground shipping at ambient weather.com. I sent them an e-mail asking if it is compatible with my cell phone. I sent a link to my brother to see what he thinks. He told me not to get a cheap one. Not that I use my cell phone much; just that if there *is* a disaster, the only way to get in touch with people would be by cell phone, and it would need to be recharged. I just really want to be prepared with my emergency kit, so when something happens, I won't kick myself. I can smile and say, "Ahhhh I am prepared". IP: Logged |

Let me know how yours works out because we want to get one too! Seriously though...the little cheapo ones are good to have around too! They are not very big and easy to put in your purse or pack.------------------ "Heaven doesn't want me and Hell is afraid I'll take over and start a rehab for the damned!" ~Judgement Must Be Balanced With Compassion~ ~Do Not Seek Wealth From The Suffering, Or The Dire Needs Of Others~ ~Assumption Is The Bane Of Understanding~ ~ if you keep doing what you did, you'll keep getting what you got.~ Everything changes.
