As many of you know my baby Girl Carrera (puppy) has been thru alot lately. With recovering from a extensive elbow surgery. This morning she had a episode of sorts which leads me and my family to believe she had a siezure (sp?) I have a vet appt for her at 11:30am. Its 10am now. When i explained what happened this morning, the womans response was siezure.
I'm so worried about her. Shes been thru so much ... still recovering almost three months later from her surgery and now this. Shes such a sweet lil girl - everyone just loves her. She brings such joy and happiness to anyone that sees her or that she sees. Even when i take her to the vet they all go goo-goo over her. They know her by Name because of everything shes gone thru. Days that she doesnt come to work with me, everyone seems down till they see her smiling, happy go lucky lil face. Please pray for her. Please pray that everything goes well and she'll be okay. She means so much to us.

I'll update once i return from the Vet's office. I trust them with all my heart to figure out whats going on with her. And trust they will do everything they can for her.

I've just popped on, but I'll try and post some links for you later, if they do think she's having seizures.

I have a dog who has several seizures a year (they generally don't happen during the winter months, for some reason). I'm no expert, because my Walt hasn't needed the medications ~ once it's over, he snaps out of it almost immediately and wants to go and play.
I do have him on a home-made diet most of the time (mostly raw), and give him rescue remedy in milk when it's over. I also can't give him the supplements that the others get ~ he always seems to react to them, if not immediately, then after a few days.

best wishes,
Angela

Here's one link that you may have found already ~ http://canine-epilepsy.com/ This is the home of a large Canine Epilepsy list. There's another out there, geared more towards holistic methods.

(I'll edit any more links I find into this post).

My dog Hope had epilepsy. She got a little pill of phenobarbitol twice a day and she was fine. Don't worry, if it IS epilepsy, it is very manageable.

I'm so sorry all ... i thought i replied to this. Apperantly i only replied to the thread in FFA ... my apologies!!

We took her in. The vet confirmed that she did have a mild siezure. He felt there was no need for testing at this point. But if it were to happen again, then yes. To find out why. He said that sometimes a dog can be provoked into a siezure, by means of loud noises and being startled. Although this wasnt the case for her. Its hard telling at this point WHY she did have one. And for all we know it was a fluke sorta thing and she may never have one again. Of course getting myself all worked up and prepared for the worst only did damage to myself. She was very brighteyed and alert going in there. And show no after signs of a major siezure. But the doc doesnt doubt what we explained, since it was all the tell tale signs of one. He did inform us that should she have another and be tested for Whatever, that its all treatable by means of medication. So that was relieving to hear.

I layed down with her and got some rest from all the emotional trama i put myself thru. I feel much better being able to clear my head and realise all will be okay. She was happy to cuddle up next to momma and not go back to work.

Thanks everyone for your prayers - i know each and everyone of them helped out in a big way. You guys are the greatest!!

A big thanks to Teaselbaby!! Those links are very informative. I have them book marked for furture referance - although i pray i wont need them. Thanks for your help. Give you pup a big hug from me!!

Thanks again everyone ...

Hmmm.....I would really keep an eye on her.
Not to upset you or anything, but I don't believe humans or animals have seizures for no reason.
I sure don't want to upset you but I just felt a need to say this.

And now for a different subject ` please tell me all about Alaska - where you live, what it's like etc. I think Alaska is so beautiful and I love the wildlife there. We can start a new Alaska thread if you like!

Thanks Nephthys! Yes, i am keeping and eye on her. He basically told us that, when/if a second occurs with in a short period of time that, that there would give him an idea of where and what to look for. Meaning that right now, yeah sure we can spend hundreds upon hundreds of dollars, testing her for every little thing and doing MRI's and CT Scans and may find nothing out of the ordinary. Where as if she has another it would be give him further insight on how to go about finding the culprit. So i am watching her very closely. She had a great weekend. Last night she was a lil fatigued - but mondays do that to her. I just hope this doesnt happen again. My friend had a retriever who had a siezure once and never again. So maybe shes gonna be the same way. One can only hope.

Alaska is beautiful. I was born and raised in Anchorage, currently living in Palmer. Palmer is located about 40-45 minutes north of Anchorage. Palmer is an old farming community. Lots of flat landm but surounded by mountains. I stand in my kitchen doing dishes, gaze out my window at the grand view of Pioneers Peak Mtn. It truley and awesome energy out here. I'm not much of a winter person now, but ask me 10yrs ago and i woulda told ya i love em. Although the winters arent as harsh in the last few years as they used to be. The summers on the other hand are awesome. Not to hot, not to cold and no humidity. Last year we had quite a few days, consecutivly in the low 80's. Which is rather strange for us. It used to be, growing up, that it was a all time record hitting even 80 alone. Very rare and once in a blue moon. If your the outdoor type of person there's many things to do in the summer, as well as the winter if you dont mind the cold; fishing, hiking, camping, rafting, etc.
The wildlife is awesome. Moose are common in the cities as well as rural. Bears arent to common in the cities, but occasionally they do wander in from the mud flats on the inlet. Fox are common in the cities, but boy are they fast. If ya blick when you think you saw one, they are gone. A few years back we had a problem with Lynx coming up from the inlet into town. Although i cant recall hearimng much about them this year - so in not sure that they are still around, like previously. One thing i love about this state is there are no snakes, or poisonous insects, spiders etc. So i'm never that worried when going camping in the wilderness, although always keeping an eye out for bears. Speaking of bears, you'd enjoy this one. Theres a place south of us, called Cooper Landing and the famous fishing river, the Russian River. There was a sow that was shot by a fisherman earlier this year. She left behind three cubs. One of the cubs hasnt been seen since this happened. But the two others remain. They are now taling about closing a certain section of the Russian River off for the bear to call home. They never wander far from this area. So thinking closing a certain amount off, that they will remain in the area. The locals habe literally adopted them. They go down and check on them daily, numerous times thru out the day. Its really heart warming how everyone has responded to this. And yet amazing how it took such a tragedy to see something truely beautiful and see the positive out of it. I can only hope they do close that section off and let them have thier home and space. Not everything has to be for US as humans, they need thier home too. It reminds me of diffrent tribes fighting over land, yet these animals cant speak for themselves, so someones gotta step up to the plate.

Its almost hard to explain this place to someone. Of course any explanation will never do justice compared to seeing it for yourself. Its been a great home to me and my family. My boyfriend and i are looking at leaving this state and finding a new place for us to call home and make home. I've been here my whole life and feel i am ready for a change. Although, who knows, most people who leave this state, find out that anywhere else isnt comparable to this place and return - so we may be those people. lol

must go for now ... talk to ya again soon.

Dear Ang ~

When my dog Hope was tested for epilepsy, the cost wasn't outrageous. We did a complete blood panel and urniary panel. When everything came out normal, + clinical diagnosis, they resolve that it is epilepsy when everything else is ruled out. So I think it may have cost over $100 but they didn't do a MRI or CT scan - you don't need that. Also, epilepsy is common in dogs and people.

I just watched an Alaska special on the Travel channel and it was breathtaking. The first hour was about wildnerness and animals; it was a documentary and not a normal travel show. It was incredible. Then then next hour was a normal travel show and that gave some good info. too.
I would love to go there, but I am not a winter person. So I'd have to go at the peak of Summer.

What about the Aurora Borealis/Northern Lights? I have always been fascinated with that! Also, how many hours of darkness a night do you have? Don't you have only a few?

One thing I learned from the shows was that Alaska has more earthquakes than Calif. The reason we don't hear about them is that Alaska does not have a high population and Calif. does.

Strange, we have a Russian River here too!
I hope the bears get to keep their land ~ Oooh I just hate to hear stories of hunters ~ how could anyone kill for sport? Ugh.

Thanks for the info. and do you have any pics from where you live?
