I love birds! I volunteer at Wildcare and take care/feed the birds! They are so cute! My favorite are the Stellars Jays and Scrub Jays! The sparrows are pigs and always hungry. The finches are hard to feed because they fly around so fast but they are always hungry too.

Big chickadee fan here. A bit chatty perhaps, but alway a cheerful, positive outlook.

It's not spring really until I hear a chickadee sing her phoebe spring song.

OK. I meant pet birds. We've got some roadrunners down here that are pretty cool.

I saw no mistake. I was thinking about illnesses with pet birds, or "why do they do this type of thing."

Sorry about her owner...
Tell your friend that birds really do greive when their previous "mate" dies. Patience is very important, you have to gain their trust.
Especially the larger parrots. They live a long time as well, so they may be accustome to certian routines the new owner isn't aware of. It's a good thing she seems to trust your friend. If you have any questions about behavior problems, especially if Angel starts to pick at her feathers and becomes nerotic. I'll help out if I can.

Thanks, PHil! She seems to be doing ok. She loves me! She whispers in my ear all the time. I can figure out what she is saying. She lifts her wings for me to rub her breast.

hey, Phill, how do I get Angle to quit biting me so hard. She knows she is doing it. She wants my undivided attention. lol. She is a young bird. I tell her no biting, rather harshly and gently tap her beak. Do you think that will work?

You said you were getting along in the begining... Was she biting then?

Imagine a toddler the same age as your parrot... that's what's going on in her mind, plus the change of owners. She has no reason to trust you in such a short time, it takes time to bond, like 10 years! (well maybe a little less.)

NEVER discipline her by touch! Remember that doesn't happen in the wild. As domesticated as they are, they still retain some of the wild instinct.

When she bites, (try) to say calmly "No biting" and immediatly put her in her cage. Cover it with a blanket so she can't see you. I say "time out" when I do this to Phil.
Cover the cage for 5 minutes with a blanket or cover. And then uncover it and talk softly, calmly about what ever behavior got her the time out. Then act as if it never happened until the next time. Parrots are very intuitive and know what emotions you are experiencing, so no harboring resentment! Eventually, she'll equate biting with being seperated from you. You are going through a bonding process, but you need to be firm and draw a boundry with the biting. I know the biting hurts, but if she were truely nasty and didn't like you, she would have already snapped your radious! Or bit off your finger.

Try to really observe her, maybe there is something you are doing or not doing that the previous owner did.
The parrots are like children, they need boundries and patience. Attention for good behavior! Like children, they have likes and dislikes too. You may scratch or pet in an area she doesn't like. (especially about where the spine and tail feathers meet.) This is a sexual area and can be very disturbing and confusing if it is not another bird doing the scratching!

There are a few areas that birds LOVE to be touched in. But before I mention these, tell me about how and where you pet her.

Also, is it a pretty structured enviornment at home? Many people, changes, a new addition to the family? Parrots depend on structure or consistancy.

Sometimes young birds test things with their beak, just like babies put everything in their mouth.

Her biting may not be a bad behavior, she may be trying to communicate something to you. (maybe she needs a larger perch than the width of your finger, they have big toes and sometimes don't feel real sturdy with little to grab onto.

Are her wings clipped?
Birds need enough room in their cage to fully extend their wings. And lots of chew toys. Rawhide dog bones are great and inexpensive. Sometimes if they don't have enough things to chew on, they get very bored! You finger or arm could be seen as a way to exercize their jaws.

So, please tell me more about her personality.

I am here. I want to know if you have any ideas to help me. My friend's Cocky( it was really her husbands bird), bites her VERY hard every chance she gets to lately. She never bites me. I think she is showing off.

She is not my bird, I would love her to be. I see her all the time (everyday sometimes) and I let her out. She does not have clipped wings. She loves to fly through the house. She will behave for awhile, then bam, she goes right for Connie and bites. She thinks it is so funny!!! she laughs out loud. and then she has to go back to the cage. She would get out more.

When they got her, they were her 3rd owners. It took awhile for her to settle in. She is not very nice to strangers. She loves kids but will swoop down on them and scare the CRAP out of them.

She gets on my lap and nuzzles my hand and says "whose a bird"
"thats nice" she wants me to pet her back and sometimes under he wings and brest. She is lovely and love me. She does not bite me hard anymore. I let her play in the sink, which she loves.

I put toys and stuff in her cage for her all the time. She loves a water bottle with a couple of pistachios in it. I did not think about rawhide. She has alot of stuff though. I find musical baby toys for her which she loves. Except ones with faces. those seem to scare her. She has a huge cage. plenty of room to strech. I picked it out.

There is not alot I can do. I have to just do what I can. Connie will never give up the bird since it was her husbands.

I love parakeets. It's so sad that since they only cost $8 people think of them as disposable. Most of them don't survive a year. I wish someone would do more to educate people about them and birds in general. They suffer so much because people just don't know their needs. Even Petsmart and places like that don't even give instructions with purchase. I had a pair for 5 years and people thought I was crazy when I took them to the vet and paid $300. I don't know why people equate the value of something with it's size.
