continued from:
When They Come a'Knockin

Padre,

quote:
And what did Christ go onto say when they asked him about it?
Something about with God all things are possible?

"All things" i.e. Even the sacrifice of possessions.

quote:
Dismiss? Hardly, Apostles had all of the offices, Evangelizing, Healing, Prophecy etc.

This is beside the point,
and not something I disagreed with.

We were speaking of Disciples, --
"the twelve" mentioned in that context.

You said he was speaking to Apostles and Disciples.

Are you saying that a Disciple is a type of Apostle,
and that he ordered all Disciples to be Evangelists,
-- but not all Apostles to be Disciples?

If so, it is a great response, which I misunderstood.

That would be "with man it is impossible with God all things are possible"

IE, his goods would not keep him from salvation.

No, keep in mind several times Christ "and his Disciples" were mentioned, the charges at the end of the 4 Gospels is the elevation to Apostolic offices, recall when he sent out the 72?

Not all 72 became Apostles, however they were all Disciples. A fascinating portion of the NT is the Apostles cast lots to replace Judas, but Christ choose Paul himself so to speak.

That's certainly one way to interpret it,
and, I would argue, a convenient one.

What did you think of my interpretation?

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. I plan on attending seminary eventually, but I have a long way to go. So, then, according to this reading, the order he gave to the original twelve was not necessarily meant for all Christians. That would definitely clear up some issues for me.

I think I found the passage you refer to at the beginning of Luke 10, but it says he appointed "seventy also", and that he sent them out in pairs. With the original twelve, that would make 82, right?

Not all of these were Apostles?
Then, how do you define Apostles?

quote:
A fascinating portion of the NT is the Apostles cast lots to replace Judas, but Christ choose Paul himself so to speak.

I only find verses about the soldiers
casting lots for Christ's garments.
Please direct me to that portion.

The Gospel of Luke and the Epistles have always been my favorites. Are you familiar with the modern scholars who claim that the Epistles may have been written by Luke -- or, perhaps, that Paul may have written the Gospel of Luke (or been the source for what was eventually written down by Luke)? I know Luke is said to have written Acts, as well, but I never responded to Acts as strongly as to Luke's Gospel and the Epistles.

Acts 1:26, they cast lots

As for your interpretation when I read later that Paul's only injunction was not to be overly proud of having wealth it seems to me the other is sort of a limitation of Christ's ability to save.

A gift of the spirit is the mark of a believer, with their being different offices including Evangelizing it suggests that not believers receive that gift.

This explains it:

quote:
The seventy disciples or seventy-two disciples (known in the Eastern Christian tradition as the Seventy Apostles) were early students of Jesus mentioned in the Gospel of Luke 10:1–24. According to Luke, the only gospel in which they appear, Jesus appointed them and sent them out in pairs on a specific mission which is detailed in the text. In Western Christianity, they are usually referred to as disciples,[1] whereas in Eastern Christianity they are usually referred to as Apostles.[2]

Using the original Greek words, both titles are descriptive, as an apostle is one sent on a mission (the Greek uses the verb form: apesteilen) whereas a disciple is a student, but the two traditions differ on the scope of the words apostle and disciple.

Apostles are charged with establishing Churches, Disciples are students of Christ.

Not really HSC, there are lots of theories and it just seems to me some or more plausiable then others. For example the theory that Paul did not write Hebrews.

Until there is real evidence of a different author it's "eh" for me at least.

Thanks for the references.

I was mistaken about the scholarship. The claim is that the author of Luke probably wrote the "Pastoral epistles" attributed to Paul (1st Timothy, 2nd Timothy, and Titus).

HSC, there are reasons why this matters to me, and no it is not "Biblical Scholar blah blah blah"

If one is whom I suspect one is HSC, think a year alone, just work, the Scripture, and absolutely trying not to blow a hole in the top of my head due to things not working out with the one I loved atm.

When things have been darkest in my life, the only one who was with me was that funny old Hebaru guy, and His Word.

Seen alot in this life HSC, no yoda me!

Fair enough. I'm not all academic, myself.
I thought you were big on that sort of thing.
Reading it "in context"; history is context.

Try to keep your head on. God is always good.

All you've been through has made you this man.
