Artist Statement

The Full Body Project
Leonard Nimoy

Who are these women? Why are they in these pictures? What are their lives about? How do they feel about themselves? These are some of the questions I wanted to raise through the images in this collection.

This current body of work is a departure for me. For a number of years, I have been producing images using the female figure. I have worked with numerous models who were professional people earning their living by posing, acting, dancing, or any combination thereof. But, as has been pointed out to me in discussions at exhibitions of my work, the people in these pictures always fell under the umbrella of a certain body type. I’ll call it a "classic" look. Always within range of the current social consensus of what is "beautiful." In fact, that was the adjective I most often heard when my work was exhibited. The women as they appeared in my images were allotted no individual identity. They were hired and directed to help me express an idea—sometimes about sexuality, sometimes about spirituality—and usually about feminine power. But the pictures were not about them. They were illustrating a theme, a story I hoped to convey.

These women are interested in "fat liberation." They hold jobs in the theater, the film industry and in business—and together they perform in a burlesque presentation called "Fat Bottom Revue." The nature and degree of costuming and nudity in their performances is determined by the venue and the audience, which can range from children’s birthday parties, to stag parties. I wanted these pictures to be more about them. These women are projecting an image that is their own. And one that also stems from their own story rather than mine. Their self-esteem is strong. One of them has a degree in anthropology and will tell you that ideas of beauty and sexuality are "culture bound"—that these ideas are not universal or fixed, and that they vary and fluctuate depending on place and time. They will tell you that too many people suffer because the body they live in is not the body you find in the fashion magazines.

My process was simple, yet different than how I had worked in the past. I was initially interested in revisiting two works of female subjects by Herb Ritts and Helmut Newton: specifically Ritts' image of a group of supermodels, who were posed nude and clustered together on the floor, and a Newton diptych wherein the two images are identical in pose, except one image showed the models clothed, and the other showed them unclothed. The models were shown the images by Herb Ritts and Helmut Newton and they were quite prepared to present themselves in response to the poses that those images suggested. I asked them to be proud, which was a condition they took to easily, quite naturally. Having completed the compositions that were initially planned, I then asked them to play some music that they had brought with them, and they quickly responded to the rhythms, dancing in a free-form circular movement with in the space. It was clear that they were comfortable with the situation, with each other, and were enjoying themselves.

With these new images, I am now hearing different words. Sometimes "beautiful," but with a different sub-text. I hear comments, which lead to questions. The questions lead to discussions—about beauty, social acceptability, plastic surgery, our culture and health. In these pictures these women are proudly wearing their own skin. They respect themselves and I hope that my images convey that to others.

And again I want to say;
God Bless you Leonard!

I do not feel like a Huttese because of your photos. I have lost over 140 pounds, and I intend on losing much more weight, but as I do, at each stage I can now see that yes, I am not traditionally figured, but I can work with that and be myself and feel and be beautiful.

A small trouble is like a pebble. Hold it too close to your eye and it fills the whole world and puts everything out of focus. Hold it at a proper distance and it can be examined and properly classified. Throw it at your feet and it can be seen in its true setting, just one more tiny bump on the pathway to life.

Love that quote Lexx

“It’s an interesting thing. Seeing Kuan Yin relating to a flower so intently. She's not just looking at it; she's interacting with it…I’m seeing how the act of relating to a flower appears to be so simple. Yet, it takes a tremendous amount of courage to make such a “simple” act important. Now, the lotus is floating away.”

Thank you pire.
Chaos still reigns.
My blindness blessedly episodes resolved again.
I am just so exhausted and stressed out.
Holding on though.
Posting here at LL helps as it gives me other things to focus on and it is usually nice conversing and sharing with folks.
Hope to get in to doctor and chiropractor this week.
Now my ex is seeming very ill and it is scary.
Going to try and "force" him to see doctor tomorrow or take him to ER.
We are still friends and still live as roomies, just not mates.
I think I caught his flubug to boot.
On that note must go for now.
Blessings and love to you dear pire {{{hugs}}}

I was thinking of you and somehow, I pictured you as a bookshop owner / librarian like the one I know in london (I mean shop). it is an amazing bookshop specialized on esoteric matters. it is called watkins and is near trafalgar square. the atmosphere is very peaceful. the stuff is very helpful. one of the woman who worked there at the time I lived in london did a reiki session on me once. she didn't ask me for money, so I decided to give here 20 euros. I was a student and could not have afforded more.

they have books on pretty much everything esoteric. astrology of course, religions like buddhism, sufism, (actually, books about the gnosis of buddhism, islam, christianism for what I can remember, surely about kabale too), shamanism
books about natural medecine, palmistry, what else? angels and all that new age stuff, it is a sort of "generalist" bookshop. some music, stones, incense, jewelery

that's is all I can remember from that place.

somehow I picture you in a place like this so well. as I said the atmosphere was serene, it is a shop, of course, with prices on books and quite a lot of people actually, even though it is in a narrow street, but the feeling is "safe", time seems with us in this place. that was my feeling there.
this old place old, 115 YEARS, has a website watkinsbooks.com

I would see you very much owning a place like this.

I thought I had to say it to you. and I should add, I would be pleased to help you in any ways I can. I have been reading on how to create a website, I don't know how to do that, but I would gladly get a handle on it if you needed.

LL is too virtual for me, I don't like that about this place, we don't help each other in real life, just sending prayers, ideally, I think internet should get more "practical" results, if you see what I mean.

Thank you for the kind offer!
And yes!
I do have a dream of owning such a place.
And I agree with you, and totally understand about the "practical".
In fact I often help out folks even by ordering food for them when I can.
Last guy I helped was homeless, wheelchair bound, and trying to go to school.
I could not do much for him but had him go to library and e-nail me and even though he is in Idaho and me in Ohio,
I paid by phone for his food that day.
A full tummy can buy a person at least a day of comfort and give them the optimism and energy to help themselves.
And it did.
He got into a shelter finally, and at least since then is not feeling as helpless or suicidal.
Having my ex and I here to listen to him is also helping him stay more upbeat.

Trying hard to think this way (the lyics) even though I feel lost and lonely and and only half living most of the time.

I feel loved but it is all so bittersweet from all the sources in a way.

Fairy tales are lies.

Happy ever after is a lie.

If it were not for the bittersweet love I have from a few people....and my past lives and my discarnate friends, and even the chance at magic and more love, however brief that time may be or complicated it is and not complete... I just do not know if I could go on hoping...I know need to/should finish this ride of this life...

However Hope is a vile 4 letter word in many ways.

Do we continue living for ourselves or because others want us to?

Is this as good as it gets?

Is it enough?

I guess it has to be.

I think of these lyrics as myself and past selves saying these things to all the we of me now.

No Boundaries

lyrics
Songwriters: Allan, Mitch; Dennis, Cathy; Dioguardi, Kara;

Seconds, hours, so many days

You know what you want but how long can you wait?

Every moment lasts forever
When you feel you lost your way

And what if my chances were already gone?

Started believing that I could be wrong

But you give me one good reason
To fight and never walk away

With every step you climb another mountain

Every breath it's harder to believe

You make it through the pain, weather the hurricanes
To get to that one thing

Just when you think the road is going nowhere

Just when you almost gave up on your dreams

They take you by the hand and show you that you can

There are no boundaries!
There are no boundaries!

I fought to the limit to stand on the edge

What if today is as good it gets?

Don't know where the future's headed
But nothing's gonna bring me down

I've jumped every bridge and I've run every line
I've risked being saved but I always knew why

I always knew why!

So hear I am still holding on!

With every step you climb another mountain

Every breath it's harder to believe

You make it through the pain, weather the hurricanes
To get to that one thing

Just when you think the road is going nowhere

Just when you almost gave up on your dreams
They take you by the hand and show you that you can

You can go higher, you can go deeper

There are no boundaries above and beneath you
Break every rule 'cause there's nothing between you and your dreams

With every step you climb another mountain
Every breath it's harder to believe

Yeah! There are no boundaries
There are no boundaries!

With every step you climb another mountain

Every breath it's harder to believe

You make it through the pain, weather the hurricanes

There are no boundaries!

There are no boundaries!
There are no boundaries

Hope is a 4 letter word.
Mother of self delusion.
Related to tomorrow which never comes.
Give me hard facts.
I can rely on their logic whether I like them or not.
