Truthfully I don't think one's intelligence or lack thereof should be judged upon their grammar. If this were a college paper to be graded or something, then I would care, but it's not. You lose alot, if you judge people that way. Some of the wisest things I've heard have come from the mouths of bums, I swear this to be the truth. There is a difference between what one can learn in books, and life experience. The bum may possibly have it in him to become the scholar, but I wonder how the scholar would do, in the bums shoes. I agree that it is also a matter of expedience. We type on cell phones all day, cutting our speech down to consonants to save time. It's bound to show up in other places we write. I have said "weather" intead of "whether" many times, and truthfully, it is because I think and type very fast, I do this to capture the thoughts before they escape. If I were to censor every word, there wouldn't be very many of them, and I would lose the essence and timing of my creativity. To each his own. As long as it makes sense, I could care less. I know the difference and almost never use the wrong one. There are rare times when I do, because I am typing too fast and I am a bad typer. I used to always proofread my posts on message boards. I was a perfectionist about it, but now, I don't do that too often and only save my extra effort for when I am doing my personal writings and other important things. I do think my posts are generally grammatically correct, even with the lack of proofreading these days, but sometimes they aren't. I just can't take the time to make them perfect anymore. It would take too long and I don't care anymore unless it's my book or something not on message boards.
I have an afflicted mercury: square uranus and pluto, but sextile saturn -- which accounts for my past disease of my writing needing to be "perfect." Screw it. PS -- I'm not proofreading this post either. IP: Logged |

LOL funny post. I notice grammatical errors too..... but some people just don't know. Simple as that. Some people have a hard time spelling, some people have a hard time with math, etc.. But does it seriously freaking matter that much? Do you really think that people need to know perfect English to post on an internet board? LOL that's funny. It's just the internet after all. I type using one finger, yet I try to be correct.I detest the misuse of homophones. I could go on ranting for pages concerning that and other annoying language/writing/typing/spelling errors. ------------------ Everyone is a teacher... Everyone is a student... In the wisest of civlizations, mere symbols were sufficient to convey pages and pages of meaning. I feel it is the intention of the writer that is important. God has made our minds capable enough to decipher the correct meaning irrespective of grammatical errors. Our Mind is so powerful that we can read this sentence nearly as fast as the correct sentence: "MrruecY ALFcTiFionS CetarE TpiynG EororS" IP: Logged |

Do you speak English? May be you think you do.I find this comment patronising and insulting. Especially as I am a bi-lingual person. You sound bitter and petty. Not cool, Valus. IP: Logged |

As a second/third-language user myself, I’m glad to see that my confusion/doubt regarding some kind of ‘dialect’ (your/you’re etc) that I would miss, isn’t well-founded. And yes ofcourse, it’s the intention of the writer that counts most. Who will doubt that?IP: Logged |

mir, I feel for the people for whom English is not their first language. This thread was not directed at them. I realize, it must be difficult to learn a language which even the native speakers routinely muddle.blue moon, I've always had atrocious spelling... and I've always said that someone who focuses on spelling to the detriment of meaning is a soulless soul-sucker, lol. So, yes, I'm a terrible hypocrite in some regards. But I don't mean for spelling to take precedence over meaning, and anyone familiar with my posts knows how rich they are in meaning, and appreciation for meaning. One or two threads addressing the matter is hardly evidence of an obsessive focus. Also, I'm very forgiving of spelling errors when it comes to words that we don't see at least a dozen times on every thread -- unlike "your" and "their". These words are such basic staples, it seems to me that a distinction can easily be made between their misuse and the misspelling of less ubiquitous words. Gypsee, I agree, it is not always an indication of low intelligence; which is why I said it was like holding a sign that says "hey I'm probably not very bright". Words like "probably" and other qualifiers are very significant to me, and not to be overlooked, though, I realize, people tend to overlook them. Subtlety of thought is frequently invisible to people, and I've had to learn the hard way that no matter how much I may qualify a statement, people may interpret it unconditionally, and ignore the better part of my thinking. So be it. What you said about the texting was interesting. Maybe it's my fixed signs that object to these eventual changes in language. But I can't help thinking it would be a sign of the decadence of the language if we all dropped the "yo" and started writing "ur". My Saturn in Virgo no likey. cpn, I'm sorry for being so harsh. I had a crumby week and felt persecuted, and saw only the worst in you. But I know you have a good heart and generally mean well. No doubt, we will lock horns again, but, as E.M. Forster wrote about violence and force: "It is, alas!, the ultimate reality, on this earth, but -- hooray! -- it doesn't always get to the front. Some people call its absences 'decadence'; I call them 'civilization' and find in such interludes the chief justification for the human experiment."

valus, i am not offended. I appreciate and love you as a person even though we have very very different lives that makes it hard to see life from each others viewpoint. God made each of us different and we may never get each other to see things "our way" but i will always value you as a person and know in my heart that we each deserve love and kindness. so i am not going to try to make you see things my way anymore and wish you well and peace and love in your life..always....pertaining to this thread, i was just having some fun.
