Do you speak English?Maybe you think you do. But here's a quick refresher course for those of you who regularly misuse "your" and "their". Unless you want to wave a sign around that says to people, right-off-the-bat, "hey, I'm probably not too bright"...
Pay Attention! I'm assuming it involves an affliction to your Mercury, since those are just as common as these grammatical errors. Don't feel bad, I've got an afflicted Mercury, too. No doubt, it manifests in other, equally thoughtless ways. Now, try to bear with me here: "you're" is an abbreviation of "you are", so, if you want to say "you are here", you would say "you're here", not "your here". Sounds simple enough, right? Let's continue... "your" signifies possession, so, if you want to say "the hat that belongs to you", you would say, "your hat", not "you're hat". I know, I know, this is First Grade sh*t. But many of you still haven't got it down. So let's continue, shall we? When you want to say "they are going", you would write "they're going", as opposed to "there going" or "their going". "There" is a place, while "their" signifies possession (just like "your"!). Wow, this is really simple! I almost feel silly having to explain this to so many of you. My apologies to those of you who have no need for this lesson. Tomorrow we'll be learning our Right from our Left. So, stay tuned!

lol I always notice these type of errors too... but sometimes people just want to write 'your' because its easier than writing 'you're' all the time. IP: Logged |

ehi find that people that value intellectualism will make more a conscious effort to learn you're/your, too/two/to, there/their/they're or just grammar conventions in general. for others, it's just not a priority. IP: Logged |

it's kind of petty to focus on grammar. if you can express your thoughts clearly without perfect grammar, it's not really an issue.i'm sure a lot of people have a problem with not using capitalization. not to mention there are a lot of posters here where english for them is a second or third language. we shouldn't marginalize them or count their ideas less. I know the difference between those words, but sometimes I make the mistake because I'm typing 10 miles faster than I'm thinking. Luckily, I correct myself. IP: Logged |
