What is a good, general rule of thumb for understanding the difference between conjunctions and oppositions in transit?

For example, transiting Neptune CONJUNCT natal Sun, versus, transiting Neptune OPPOSITE natal Sun?

To use your example I suppose tNeptune opposite sun would modify the sun somehow in a Neptunian way. Maybe like putting the natal sun through a really long car wash or steam bath.

tNeptune cj Sun...now I'm going to have this exact on my natal sun for 8 months. I think it is going to be more like dropping my sun into a glass of water and having it dissolve like one of those stomach upset tablets.

Conjunction seem to be far stronger than oppositions. Especially if it's Pluto, Saturn or Chiron.

I think my mother felt tPluto cj Jupiter(sag) far more than I felt tPluto opp Jupiter(can). I liked that transit a lot but I think the conjunction threw her around a lot.

This is true in natals too. Conjunctions give 2 planets an identity that can't be broken down, the 2 energies merge and work as one, no separate identity. Oppositions in natals usually have one side that is disowned and met in others, sometimes in not so positive associations to push the person to incorporate that energy.
Hope that makes sense.
Same as natals, same concept.

Anglerfish, are you Pisces?
I have very early degree Pisces Sun, and I feel like I'm starting to drown and becoming more confused. Neptune rules my 9th. I have strong Saturn/Pluto so I don't really think I'm gonna enjoy this transit much

When I had Neptune-Sun opposition I suddenly became delusional for the first time in my life. I was wondering if it would happen the same way with the conjunction. (I'll never find out though, Neptune is too slow.)

I"m curious as well how Neptune is going to effect me. My MC is in early Pisces, with my chart ruler in early degrees of Sag squaring my MC (which Merc is the ruler of my 4th and 1st house) Sigh...

Yep. 0 degrees, according an ephemeris tNeptune is at 0 Pisces from
5 Apr 11-5 Aug 11, 4 feb 12-1 mar 12, 23 sep 12-29 dec 12. This is not counting the time it'll be in orb, it'll be in orb until early 2014.

Hooray tNeptune cj Sun and tPluto cj Uranus together...what fun...*sarcasm*

Neptune goes retro once and direct once at 0 Pisces.

Neptune rules my 5th, I also have strong Saturn/Pluto and strong Mars. I'd rather have a Saturn transit...at least I know I'm there to do something.

one is a crisis of identity involving confusion about the self in the house and sign, with a natal conjunct transformation is impossible even if I drink once a month - 8th house 10 degree conjunction, the other is a matter of timing, see-saw effect, still a crisis of identiy, as in ideals going against identity, or taking away from....balance is required, spirituality, the books have been written, read them.

Don't look to satisfy neptune through another, hard work, altruistic lifestyle will ensure your talents are cultivated properly...

your ideals should be pure, as in not influenced by the media at all.

and you should aspire to be what you want, but the purest form of it, and gradualty gently, with patience....things that aren't neptunian in nature for most, but can be programmed to be...for instance i always wanted to be a rockstar, but can i do that following the seven virtues i've aspired to conform too? No...but i can still write music.

Peace./

Pluto in scorpio conjunct vertex, saturn conjunct south node, capricorn sun, doulbe house 8th and 9th.....you want to talk about plutonian/saturn types, i am the greatest one ever born - not bragging, a curse...my north node is in taurus.

Pluto rules my everything...when i join large organizations I rise like an ice-cube.

6th-7th-8th- and 10th house plutonian

Pray for me.

I'm feeling the fog of Neptune opposing both my natal Moon and Mars...I can't handle this til 2014!!

Darn Neptune retrogrades back and forth til March 2014 and with Moon at 26 degrees Leo and Mars at 1 degree Virgo, it's feeling endless.

All I want to do is escape and disappear into thin air...it sounds ideal. I would live on the road or find somewhere cheap, become a gypsy of sorts. I alternate between moments of sheer misery and feeling smothered and confined by life with pure self-protective instincts kicking in, to moments of pure joy and contentment...my Virgo mind is going nuts

Anyone else in a Neptune fog and/or delusion?

Yes.

tNeptune currently squares my Mars and opposes my Moon, and it will soon square my Ascendant.

Oh the fog..

Fun times.

I loved it when Tr Neptune was conjunct my Moon (once I figured there is no use resisting and simply went with the flow and marvelled at all these crazy things that started happening, that made me feel like I was walking through a surreal fairy-tale-kingdom rather than real life).

I was having the most vivid and enlightening dreams, too.

I`d say simply try and go with the flow.
Though I figure it would be harder to do so for a Virgo-emphasized person than me, as the ruler of my Sagittarius-stellium is in Pisces and Neptune conjuncts my Mars, ASC and NN, so I am Neptunian anyway and kind of used to the "fog".

EDIT:
At the same time Tr Pluto was being conjunct my natal Sun and Mercury, so it was a very transformative time.

As a matter of fact it happened during that time that I came to LL.

Final outcome depends on your own natal, which aspect, conj or oppo would be more beneficial. If you have Tsquares or oppositions (3+) you might not feel that anything changed. (during transit in opposition)

Oh... I am feeling the Neptunian fog, but also in conjunction with my Saturn return.

Transiting Neptune is hitting my lovely t-square. It opposes my Venus/MC/Sun and squares my Jupiter/Uranus and Chiron respectively. While it doesn't feel like anything MAJOR has changed, it does feel like I've "gone stupid" so to speak. I have the hardest time making decisions that are productive and in getting things going. I'm not majorly Neptunian and so this is driving me bonkers. Furthermore, I don't feel like I can see people or situations clearly like I usually do.

You would think that with the transiting Saturn trining the transiting Neptune it would help to give some stability, but I'm not so sure.

I think the one good thing about the tNeptune is that it's brought a lot of Pisceans into my life to help teach me Piscean concepts (what to do with fuzzy boundaries, compassion, more about empathy, what purpose dependency serves, etc).

Transits the strongest is conjunction, and will simply *set off* that natal planets ASPECTS of that planet.

oppositions tend to be other people, opposing that the transit it trying to show you..
