Recently I've taken up an interest in learning more about Chinese Astrology. I got a reading from a Chinese Astrologer few weeks ago (& found it quite accurate), which peaked my interest. Just thought I'd share a few major key points what I learnt from him, since it seems some of us here are slightly interested, but dont know how it works. I, myself am still learning, so not a pro by any means. - Like Western Astrology, your Birth time is crucial, as they use houses & planetary aspects for predictive astrology. - Chinese Culture is heavily based on "Luck & Prosperity." Hence their system is based around JUPITER transits, & not the Sun. Jupiter takes 12 years to make a full cycle, which is why there's 12 animal zodiac signs. - Further breakdowns, 5 elements (Gold (Venus), Wood (Jupiter), Water (Mercury), Fire (Mars), Earth (Saturn). Also, 2 energy forces (Yin/Yang) are used. These are used to breakdown the year, month, week, day. Those who practice Feng-shui would understand how to use these principles. ie. Water element (Mercury ruled). Wednesday is a Water day, ruled by Mercury. ie. 2011 Metal Rabbit. Metal year ruled by Venus. - The Chinese consider the year you were born, & your 60th Birthday as your biggest & most important Birthdays. As it takes 60 years to go through the 5 elements & make a full cycle back to "your specific," sign.
ie. (0yrs old) METAL RABBIT -> Water Rabbit -> Wood Rabbit -> Fire Rabbit -> Earth Rabbit -> (60yrs old) METAL RABBIT. - Each Elemental Rabbit has a very different personality, but still sharing core basic Rabbit traits. Now throw the 2 energies (Yin/Yang), on top of that, further modifies. ie. Yin-Metal Rabbit VS. Yang-Metal Rabbit. - The reason Northern Vietnam uses Chinese Astrology, is because there's a huge Chinese population there. Which is bigger than most Chinese migrant populations in South East Asia. The Rabbit was replaced by the Cat to compliment local cultural tastes. (Personally I prefer going traditional when it comes to things with over 2000 years of history).
[edit add]:
- With Synastry, like Western Astrology, you're most compatible with the animal signs TRINE to yours & Sextiles to a lesser degree. IP: Logged |

I forgot to add,The SNAKE is arguably the luckiest sign when it comes to manifesting material wealth. (Of course, provided you have good planetary aspects to boot). One of my cousins, a Taurus-Fire-Snake, had married into huge wealth. Taurus & Snake, the 2 material signs...I just find it interesting. IP: Logged |

Mblake,Wouldnt wanna mess with you. You could peck the cr@p outta people. LOL. j/k. Mblake, do you know what day of the week you were born?? to further refine the element? As Metal is only the year you were born. There's still Month, Week, Day. This separates every other Metal Rooster born in your same year. I've read before that combination tends to produce an "INTJ personality." Provided other aspects in the chart supports it. I suppose Yang-Metal Rooster would be more ENTJ like. Metal Roosters tend to give the (_NT_) traits at the very least. IP: Logged |

Benedict,Yes the Dragon is the ruler of all the animals, & would be quite lucky too. Although when it comes to manifesting material wealth, the snake is still ahead. We also have to keep in mind not all dragons & snakes are created equal. Depending on "all," the elements that person was born into, could be harmonic or disharmonic. IP: Logged |

Oh yeah, the details: I'm a Yang Wood Dragon. I think that's Jupiter...*wait, this book actually tells me the Ascendant too, but not the rest of it. I know I was born a Sunday, on the 17th of July in '88. IP: Logged |

MBlake, my boyfriend was born in 81 too, he's a Rooster as well.. There was something about you that seemed familiar in a way, maybe that's what it is. What are your regular astro placements, if you don't mind me asking. I am a Fire Horse. Goes good with being a Sagittarius, me thinks. Horses all the way 'round. Clippity Clomp.

Thats good to know that dragons and snakes are well liked here. I was born in the month of the metal dragon and hour of the wood snake. But here is a link I havn't posted til now http://www.tuvy.com/entertainment/chinese_horoscope.htm where you can look up the personality traits for your animal and here are some brief examples: Earth Snake Before we get to the good things, let's get this out of the way: The Earth Snake can be, in a word, snaky. People generally gravitate towards these very graceful creatures who are citizens of the world, as much at home on the tennis court as in a museum or taking part in a street festival. Once the love bug bites, they are very ingenuous and imaginative in keeping the romantic flame burning. Fire Snake The Fire Snake is like a meteor in the sky, brilliant and alive. With split second reflexes, they are constantly conceiving new ideas and coming up with new schemes. Relationships follow the same path, through faithfulness, perseverance, and willingness to make relationships really work, the future is always bright. Metal Rabbit Metal Rabbits make a very big deal about the true lasting values of life. Although too conservative to catapult themselves onto the map, the successful people who have made it because of them are legends. The very caring ways of the Metal Rabbit lead them to experience poetically quiet and at the same time exquisitely intense relationships. IP: Logged |

Specialistangel, ["What does that have to do with astrology?"] -- Well this is Chinese astrology. Instead of using constellations for signs, they use animals. I guess it really doesnt matter what you call or name a sign...as when it comes down to predictive astrology, both uses planetary aspects anyways. Gypsee,
You really do strike me as a horse. I recall you mentioning before that you like dating younger guys. Horses are like the eternal romantics, running around & hard to tie down. Sounds quite Sagg or Aqua too. Acoustic, I'm just curious, do you have much Cappy influence in your chart? Rats come off really Cappy to me. I know 2, my Aunt & a DIR I used to work for. The DIR had 4 planets in Cap, so he was very Cappy. I dont have my aunt's birth info, but she strikes me as very capricornian. She built an entire Company from scratch & was on the cover of Time magazine before.
I was born on a Wednesday (Water/Mercury) day. I happen to be Virgo Sun, with Mercury conjunct my Asc by 1 degrees.

Chinese Astrologies are the same as all the other astrology and don't forget Numerology, it's all a matter of which one you get used to. I used Western Astrology because I'm inthe West. IP: Logged |

interestingly, people i have encountered who know very little about astrology always tell me they identify more with the description(s) of their chinese zodiac sign than their western one. personally, i like that the chinese zodiac is extremely specific about who you can/cannot be matched with for marriage and friendship, etc. - i have found it to be eerily trueIP: Logged |
