A belief in destiny and free will at the same time is called Compatibilism.
I remember briefly learning it in my ethics class.

I don't believe in destiny. I think things can FEEL fated but not necessarily pre-ordained... or at least I feel like a person has many different destinies and any path they choose will lead to a different sort of conclusion (like a Choose Your Own Adventure novel).

I can understand that Amowls, my main issue with destiny is that implies we don't have a choice and I feel strongly that in most things we do.

I think we can blame "destiny" when some part of us can't take full responsibility for our actions both good and bad)

I believe in destiny/fate..

Here is how I see it, view it..

I believe that we have a specific destiny to fulfill.. That there is a purpose..

At the same time I dont think everyday is predestined.. Some specific major events, and also some of our meetings with specific people are destined, for a specific time.

I believe how we handle these meetings and events and how we deal is the free will part. We have to choose what to do with these people/events.

Sometimes our choices create karma, sometimes we learn and move forward to bigger and better!

Parallel Universes? I have always wondered about this that if we make one choice what about the others? They are there in the ether anyway so....? I have got the hang of this theory little bit. It seems its like the computer programme. Various choices are there whatever we chooose the conclusion will be accordingly. Got to get proper grasp yet. Anybody knows this stuff and can explain clearly?

Destiny to me is certain things that you are meant to experience based on past choices/thought patterns. Everything happens for a reason. Our freedom we have is in choosing how we respond, and we have a choice every second. Astrology may show a reflection of current circumstances but only as it involves certain energies. I still don't believe 100% in predictive astrology, have yet to see anyone who can read charts to that extent; very unimpressed. My chart's Air dominant 33.6%

This thread inspired me to "go back" and think about all my "significant relationships" and circumstances around them (ie where we met etc). It made me laugh really. Oh the irony.

Thanks maira. I get a bit uneasy if i don't recollect something very close to me or familiar to me. Like its on the tip of the tongue and won't come out. OK. So thats how i must have heard about it. And also thx for reminding about wanting and already having. Its nice to receive reminders when in the middle of a routine humdrum we forget about some imp perspectives.

Astrology or our Natal Chart is our Destiny.

I believe in Destiny, because I went through all possible.
Free Will is one part of Destiny. When somebody has good health, can work and has enough money, he has Free Will: to buy good things, to travel, to have big house or good car.
There are things; people can't buy with the money: True Love! Some of them can't buy own children.

Some rich people get some evil Cancer and there is no money to help them. They get so-called quick Cancer, like Liver or Kidney Cancer. In that case, all is over.
If somebody has car accident and loses his leg, there is no money to buy own leg, back.

I have started to believe in Black Magic, also part of Destiny. One part of me believes, the other doesn't. I have seen somewhere; there are aspects of Black Magic in Natal Chart.

I think that we choose our behaviours which determine our destiny...If you are enmeshed in a pattern of thought and experience then you can predict the outcome, otherwise you can choose an alternative way of being.

However this is not easy...Thoughts are behaviours are highly addictive, and we get much comfort from our patterns of life....or shall we say security?

Thinking again of Randall's "The Most Important Thread on This Site" post... who knows it?

VenusDiSirius

A brilliant man explained Determinism for me and here it is, in my language.

A young man shoots up a school, Columbine style.

Why did he do it? we ask.

Through impossibly in depth analysis we conclude it was because of all his environmental experiences up to this point... that made him who he "is" or at least the one who chose his actions.

All of those experiences...

why did they happen?

Well, one happened because another guy was who he "is" and he was made that by his experiences and the people who influenced them because they are who they "are" for all the experiences that shaped their choices.
These choices, affected by other choices that were affected by other choices... this lifetime or others too... until the Beginning.

the initial burst of energy...
the initial creation.

with a determined outcome
too vast for our comprehension

sometimes
we can taste it, though. <3

I want to hit my head against a desk, puke and run around screaming.

Yesterday I was quitting the day in a bad mood, ego/inner child nerd raging over what in part I believed to be my own stupidity in repeating a behaviour interpretation mistake from high school.

So this morning then, first I find what card Lioness picked for me as 28 ... stay calm, relax etc.

Then I pick my daily tarot card ... the King of Cups (Rider-White), the interpretation on that side being paraphrased "don't listen only to ration, trust your feelings and allow yourself to show them to someone you care about" This is the Knight in some other desks?

Then I go to the car, the clock inside there is 10:44 and the effin radio plays a song about seeing the magic of the stars ...

I am seething ... coincidences or hints for Missy Rational-Scientific. Someone is having a laugh, and it ain't me.

Maybe my subconcious that is tricking me by manifesting.

Wow....that's pretty beautiful. I just ask a simple question, and look at how many different opinions there are. I especially like the post there, right there, above this one. Makes me smile.

Thanks, everyone, for all your wonderful answers.

And I leave you guys with these quotes...food for thought

“Watch your thoughts, for they become words.
Watch your words, for they become actions.
Watch your actions, for they become habits.
Watch your habits, for they become character.
Watch your character, for it becomes your destiny.”

“I seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be.”

“Every man has his own destiny: the only imperative is to follow it, to accept it, no matter where it leads him.”

“It (destiny) is what you have always wanted to accomplish. Everyone, when they are young, knows what their destiny is. At that point in their lives, everything is clear and everything is possible. They are not afraid to dream, and to yearn for everything they would like to see happen to them in their lives. But, as time passes, a mysterious force begins to convince them that it will be impossible for them to realize their destiny.” - Paulo Coelho

I'm not sure. Sometimes I want to find my path in life and then wonder if there IS a path to follow.

quote:

1. Something that is to happen or has happened to a particular person or thing; lot or fortune.
2. The predetermined, usually inevitable or irresistible, course of events.
3. The power or agency that determines the course of events.

1. No
2. No
3. A Big YES!

In terms of astrological destiny, no.

When certain chart transits are showing, you should....meet that person, buy a something or do a something. If you lock yourself in a room for the course of your life, these things will not happen to you. It's about what would happen if you did interact with the universe. Could being locked up in a room show in your natal chart? Yes? For the whole life? Harder to work out. This example would isolate the event happening in your natal chart, and make the rest of the gifts you were given by the universe to be a choice that you did not take, a road you did not travel.

I give a thumbs up to this post so you people don't have to.

i think you can meet your destiny half way by taking what you already know from things like astrology, averages, premonitions, dreams. And then showing up and following through to see where they take you. very interesting question though. but really i wouldn't know.

For me, destiny and intuition are linked.

I've actually come to the conclusion that this is my answer about what destiny is. Thanks so much for writing this Rachel. You helped me out.

Some quotes to think about:

“Simple rules of life: whatever makes you sad, leave it. Whatever makes you happy, keep it!”

“But I looked at everything I had worked so hard to accomplish, it was all so meaningless― like chasing the wind. There was really nothing worthwhile anywhere.” — Ecclesiastes 2:11

"Overcome the notion that you must be regular. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary."

"Don't let anyone ever call you average. Don't ever settle for ordinary."

"All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up." - Paulo Coelho

"Make sure that when you say YES to others, you are not saying NO to yourself." - Paulo Coelho

"I don't want to live. I want to LOVE First and live incidentally."

One of the huge mistakes people make is that they try to force an interest on themselves. You don’t choose your passions; your passions choose you. Jeff Bezos

Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who could not hear the music. Angela Monet

Hell is not in torture; Hell is in an empty heart.. Kahlil Gibran

“Sometimes the best way to figure out who you are is to get to that place where you don’t have to be anything else.”

“What is uttered from the heart alone, Will win the hearts of others to your own.”
“There are only two ways to live your life. One is as though nothing is a miracle. The other is as though everything is a miracle.” – Albert Einstein

And my goal is to Change The World.

“Everyone has his own specific vocation or mission in life… Therein he cannot be re placed, nor can his life be repeated. Thus, everyone’s task is as unique as is his specific opportunity to implement it.” – Viktor Frankl “Your work is to discover your work and then, with all your heart, to give yourself to it.” – Buddha “One person with a belief is equal to a force of 99 who have only interests.” – John Stuart Mill “Nothing is likely to help a person overcome or endure troubles than the consciousness of having a task in life.” ~ Victor Frankl “Make your life a mission – not an intermission” ~ Unknown “Here is the test to find whether your mission on earth is finished. If you’re alive, it isn’t.” ~ Richard Bach

“Holding on to anything is like holding on to your breath. You will suffocate. The only way to get anything in the physical universe is by letting go of it. Let go & it will be yours forever”. – Deepak Chopra

“Remembering you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.” ~ Steve Jobs.

“Don’t ask yourself what the world needs, ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs is people who are alive.” – Howard Thurman

“If you have built castles in the air, your work need not be lost; that is where they should be. Now put foundations under them.” – Henry David Thoreau
