First of all, I'm not exactly religious. Well, I'm agnostic, but anyway. I'm probably not the most spiritual person anyone is ever going to meet. At my best, I'm probably just philosophical.

I also do understand why clerics of any religion would abstain from sex, and believe it or not, I also understand why road would want to. But the question that arises with me concerning abstinence is this: why do people expect that you have to abstain from earthly "desires" to become spiritual?

When I hear abstinence, the first metaphor I think of, is alcohol. People who are addicted to alcohol, have to abstain from drinking it in order to get on with their daily lives, to concentrate on having their lives in order. In that light, I believe abstinence fulfills a function in spirituality that has nothing to do with becoming spiritual, but more to do with not being distracted so you can focus on the spiritual matters, which then, in turn can lead to being spiritual.

But I believe firmly that there are also other ways to obtain spirituality. I don't believe that abstination is necessary to obtain that state of mind at all, in fact, I believe that not having the desire to have sex is the sign of a spiritually evolved state of mind. To come back to the alcoholism metaphor (probably not the best chosen metaphor, because it makes having sex look like something bad if you do compare both... ), someone who has a strong desire to drink, has to abstain from it. Someone who has little or no desire to drink, will not be distracted by it and thus does not need to abstain.

In short, I think a spiritual state of mind is one where the person experiencing it simply has no desire for earthly needs anymore and thus does not need to abstain from them.

Just my humble opinion. I hope I didn't insult anyone by it, and if I did I apologize because it certainly wasn't my intention.

Finally, I don't think I'm spiritual at all, given what I believe spirituality is about. I am far from ready to not have any desire for earthly needs yet, and I am in fact very physical. My earthly desires are very great.

Forgive me for this, as I do respect your choice, I have a good friend who's been abstinent for some time and he's almost in his 30's as well, but...

You don't know what you're missing until you've had it.

I understand that one can feel calmer that way. If one doesn't know what he is missing, he can't be stressed about it

Somehow, at this point in time, I kind of wish I'd been abstinent until now as well! Maybe I'm wrong though, Coffee, I'm just assuming you've never had sex before. It doesn't make a difference really, like I said I have a good friend about your age who is, as far as I and his brother know, still a virgin. We both respect him just the same

To begin with, I wouldn't be able to, because I mentioned before that I am too physical to ever be able to be completely abstinent. I need sex as a form of affection, and that is probably due to my dysfunctional childhood but who's to say. I respect the choice of Coffee and that friend of mine to not indulge to sexual pleasures, but I just can't live by it.

In the end, I suppose I'm trying to say that everyone must live by their belief, their feelings and let others be.

Totally not true in my case. I get downright ornery if I have to go for longer than a couple days without getting down and making love.
