I was thinking some more about the role that natal patterns play in relationships even before the synastric interaspects come into play.

I termed these natal patterns "mirrors", if it was the same pattern, and "complements" if complementary (Yin-Yang-planets) were coupled with the same planet.

For this I compared planets- signs- aspects, but left out the houses in a mix.

so a natal pattern can look like this:
chart A:
Sun in Scorpio

chart B:
Sun aspecting Pluto

That would basically be the same pattern, or very similiar.

The "pairings":
1. Sun-Moon-level
2. Venus-Mars-level
3. Mercury-level
4. Jupiter-Saturn-level (kind of social relation)
(5. IC-MC-level
6. ASC-DESC-level)

MEANING:

The basic principle is that we somehow live or manifest our natal charts; it`s the traits we have been given and we will express them (in some way at least - that`s the basic principle of psychological astrology).

But that means that these traits will be become apparent or influence our interactions with other people as well, and these other people have been given their own unique traits and will react to our expression of ours. And they most probably do that according to THEIR natal pattern.

If theh patterns of two charts now "fit" each other, it usually happens in two ways:

1. Mirroring
The patterns are exactly the same (Venus/Jupiter in both charts or Mars/Saturn in both charts for example).
There will be a psychological affinity.
Both people experience certain aspects of their world / life the same way; this can happen on different levels of course (similiarity in communication - Mercury; similiarity in expression of love- Venus etc.).

If we meet someone who has the same pattern as we have, he becomes our "mirror". We recognize ourselves in them, he reflects something back to us about ourselves.
Now there are two possible reacctions (at least these are the two I can think of now).

A. We do not like that part in ourselves, we have projected it out and it has become our "shadow".
If we now recognize this part in the other person, we probably will not like him.
An indicator often for this is if we experience an extremely strong and irrational emotional negative reaction. That is usually a pretty good sign that it does have something to do with ourselves or the perception we have of ourselves.

B. But usually, if we are comfortable with ourselves especially, there will be a feeling of great familiarity, a natural kinship, and we feel drawn to the other person because of that warm cuddly mutual understanding.

I think the first case probably will happen more often if the pattern involves stressful aspects to Saturn, Chiron, Uranus or Pluto (with Neptune you never know. lol). But not always. I have far more often seen the "mirroring" providing a stable basis of familiarity, a foundation or even a warm cocoon (which sometimes is not only good btw).

It usually marks some sort of "underlying compatibility".

---------------------------------------

2. "Complementing"
This is the "key-and-lock-situation" (as the astrologer Michael Roscher described it).

Complementing planets have constellations with the same planets/ or signs.

That is one person has a planet aspecting the Yin-part of the pairing, the other has the Yan-part aspected.

Example:
person A:
Sun in Scorpio

person B:
Moon square Pluto

The same pattern / theme (Pluto in this case), just that the manifestation / expression is more directed outwards for person A and more inwards for person B.
this usually results in a strong magnetism and attraction (or invites projection if we do not really like our personal themes).
This relates to underlying attraction

(I chose the term "underlying" to indicate that this stems from the natal chart and the individual character of people, and not from a synastric analysis)

No relationship, which is not a passing fling, will exist without these.
The exception might be relationships, in which people only share the same space, but are not really living with each other.

These patterns will tell us a lot about the issues / themes that will arise in that particular relationship, and should we find the same constellations in synastric aspects, we will probably look at the main focus of the relationships (or main foci, as there usually are more than one pattern).

Probably these will even be karmic.

This is an analysis that must happen before any comparision of synastric aspects; these can only make sense on the basis of both people`s personality and their needs and instinctual urges.

After all there has to be something we can "r e l a t e " to, and this is always found in the other person first and foremost (or the person we are with easily becomes exchangeable).

I will post an example soon.

I read that astrologically, projection is the domain of the opposition aspect solely, and that people with the aspect tend to have a lot of stuff projected onto them. I have Sun-Mercury opposing my ascendant in the 7th and I've found that personally to be true.

As far as actual planets linked to that I've seen Neptune and to a lesser extent, Pluto. That also appears to be supported by real life experience on my part because I have Neptune as a singleton in my chart and Moon-Pluto and I always have a problem with people not seeing me clearly and projecting their own shadow or dark side onto me, especially women. I have a billion and one horror stories about mentally unstable women targeting me for no reason other than that in their own heads they truly believe I'm inherently evil.

Example:
My parents
I was sticking to the planetary levels for simplicity, and left out the angles for now.

1. Mirroring

1. Sun/Moon-level
-----------------
° both have Sun in 5th house
° (his moon in 8th house - her Moondispositor is Scorpio)

2. Mercury-level
-----------------
° his mercury quinkunx Pluto - her Mercury is in Scorpio

3. Venus-Mars-level
-------------------
° his Venus in Aquarius - her Venus sextile Uranus
° his Venus trine Mars - her Venus conjunct Mars
° his Mars in Libra - her Mars conjunct Venus
° his Venus opposite Pluto - her Venusdispositor in Scorpio
° his Marsdispositor in Aquarius and his Mars widely square uranus - her Mars sextile Uranus exact

There is a huge Pluto-theme (pertaining to Moon, Mercury and Venus)
and there is a huge Uranus-theme (pertaining to Venus and Mars)

2. Complementing

1. Sun/Moon-level
-------------------
° his Sun conjunct Jupiter - her Moon opposite Jupiter
(° his Moon in 8th house - her Sun in Scorpio)
° his Moon squares Sun - her Sundispositor in Leo

2. Venus/Mars-level
---------------------
° his Venus in Aquarius - her Mars sextile Uranus exact
° his Venus opposite Pluto - her Marsdispositor in Scorpio
° his Marsdispositor in Aquarius - her Venus sextile Uranus

So, the Uranus an Pluto-theme is further reinforced on the complementing level (Pluto pertains to Sun/Moon as well as Venus/Mars, uranus pertains mainly to the Venus/Mars-level)

Additionally there is a bit of a Jupiter and Sun theme on the Sun/Moon-level.

3. synastric reinforcements

Summary of the natal themes with synastric "fulfillment":

A. Venus/Uranus and Mars/Uranus:
her Uranus quinkunx his Venus
her Uranus square his Mars

B. mercury/Pluto
his Pluto square her Mercury widely (5)
her Pluto quinkunx his Mercury (2-3)

C. Moon/Pluto, Sun/Pluto
nothing

D. Venus/Pluto, Mars/Pluto
nothing

E. Sun/Sun, Moon/Sun
his Sun square her Sun
her Sun opposite his Moon

F. Sun/Jupiter, Moon/Jupiter
her Jupiter sextile his Sun exact

The Jupiter, Uranus and Sun theme manifest easily in the interaction (synastric aspects). The Pluto theme does not manifest in an emotional or sexual way (no reinforcing synastric aspects), it will kind of simmer in the background, but it does not disappear either, as it is part of both my parents "personal profiles".
It does expresses itself through communication though (mercury/Pluto-aspects). Which is true, and usually my Father acts out the Mercury-part and my Mum the Pluto-part (he has Virgo-ASC and she has Scorpio Sun and Mercury, so it probably is clear why they "divide" the aspect as they seem to do often).

What is fascinating to me is that my brothers and me "inherited" these natal themes.
All of them!

Ceridwen, You break ground with Astrology. You have many, many, original insights. I really like how you dissect a chart, and you're very thorough.
I wish you would write a book.

Excellent thread!

Ceridwen, what about sharing the same aspect? (for eg., two persons have in common a Sun-Uranus conjunction). Which logic will apply, underlying compatibility or underlying attraction? I was tempted to say compatibility but I can think of many examples where I recognize the attraction pattern. Guess it depends if the aspect is in the same sign (e.g., both have the conjunction in Libra, and then is compatibility) or in different signs (attraction)

I swear this is confusing the crap outta me LOL.

If you're saying that similar planetary themes can explain attraction that otherwise isn't accounted for in either synastry or composites, that's true, yeah.

If you're also saying that astrological themes get passed down through families, that's true as well.

The projection thing I still think is something else entirely though, after reading a lot on the subject and actually seeing it manifest in exactly that manner.

Belligerent Pygmy,

I find it interesting that you were the first to reply. You say you have Sun/Mercury in 7th house, I have Sun/mercury in 1st house. So in a way just by reacting (7th house) to my action of writing that post (1st house), we demonstrated how this theory works. Amazing.

And yes, what I wanted to say was:
that similiar planetary themes can explain attraction / compatibility without even looking at the synastry first; just based on characteristic personal traits, as indicated by the planetary patterns, and also that i think it is a necessary condition for superb synastry to really take off the ground.
And also that it seemingly gets passed down through families, yes.

To be honest up to now I have usually seen it manifest this way, as familiarity that leads to liking, and attraction.

About projection, there are some very interesting books on that, by Jung of course, and astrologically speaking by Banzhaf / Theler / Hamaker-Zondag/ Adler-Gral.
Projection is not always "bad", it is a natural process that happens everyday.
Where it can "derail" is, when we simultaneously "disown" these characteristics and deny they have anything to do with us, and point our fingers always to the other ones, who are reflecting back something about us, we have projected and disowned because we cannot or do not want to face it and handle it. Until we re-integrate it we will meet it in the outside world again and again. But I think (just a personal opinion, not a scientific fact) that this is only true if we project AND disown characteristics.
Anyway that is a can of worms, I rather not open; I only mentioned it because there always is the possibility that we choose to disown certain traits / astrological pattern and push them into the subconsciousness and probably we might react differently then,, if we we meet "this part of ourselves" in the outside world.

But that is just theory, from experience I have usually seen these underlying aspects, or as Lonake calls them "Pseudo conjunctions", acting very positive in terms of indicating a connection between two people, even without Venus/mars or Sun/Moon-interaspects.

Lalalinda,

thank you so much for your encouraging words .

Allouette,

regardless of sign-background (though for the interpretation we have to consider it of course) I`d term that as "compatibility", as both people have exactly the same combination of planets.

i think that would make for an attraction that is based on recognizing similiar ground. Feeling drawn to each other because the other one gives out a familiar vibe.

Another example: Paul Newman - Joanne Woodward

MIRROR:

1. Sun/Moon-level
---------------------
His Sundispositor Pisces -
her Sun in Pisces opposite Neptune

His Sun square Saturn
her Sun sextile Saturn

His Moon in pisces
her Moon opposie Neptune wide

His Moon in 2nd house
her Moon in 2nd house

2. Mercury level
-----------------
His Mercury in 1st house
her Mercury in 1st house

His Mercury conj. Jupiter -
her Mercury trine Jupiter

3. Venus/Mars level
-------------------
His Venus in Cappy sextile Saturn -
her Venus sextile Saturn

His Venus Disp Scorpio opp. Pluto -
her Venus trine Pluto

His Venus conj. Mercury -
her Venusdisp. In Virgo

His Venus conj. Jupiter
her Venus square Jupiter

His Venus square chiron wide
her Venus sextile Chiron

His Mars and its Disp. In Aries
her Marsdispositor in Aries

His Mars conj. Chiron
her Mars square Chiron

COMPLEMENT

1. Sun/moon-level
---------------------
His Sun in Aquarius
her Moon in Aquarius

His Sundisp. Pisces
her Moon opposite Neptune wide

His Moon in Pisces
her Sun in Pisces opp. Neptune

His Moon in 2nd house
her Sun in 2nd house

2. Venus/Mars-level
----------------------
His Venus in 1st house
her Mars in 1st huse

His Venusdisp Scorpio opp. Pluto -
her Mars quink. Pluto

His Venus conj. Mercury -
her Mars conj. Mercury

His Venus square Chiron widely
her Mars square Chiron

His Mars trine Neptune
her Venus in Pisces

His Mars conj. Chiron
her Venus sextile Chiron

Of the many shared themes they`ve had, I`d say that Neptune and Chiron stand out, followed by Pluto.

I think I've got one

His Ascendant is Libra
ruling planet Venus in Libra/12th...home and exalted
opposite Jupiter

Her Ascendant is Sagittarius
ruling planet is Jupiter in Sag/12th...home and co ruler
opposite Venus

Both charts have the Chart Ruler in the 12th house, and both have Venus opposite Jupiter and their ruling planets in their home sign.

what do you think Ceri?

Lala,

wow, what a pattern! Even down to the details. Looks like a very strong Venus/jupiter-theme. Does it play out in the real interaction? And are there synastric aspects between Venus and Jupiter or even Jupiter aspecting DESC or DESC-ruler?

Lonake,

it actually took me some time to phrase the initial posts, to put my thoughts into words (and I am sure I forgot to mention some important things - so just jump in, if you see something missing ).

I am simply fascinated with it. And even though it seems like almost everyone agrees that first we have to analyse the natal charts, before assuming how synastry might play out, I rarely see it being done (there are exceptions of course).
And I thought this might give a good initial feeling for what people are "about" and what they react to in each other.

Co-incidentally, I was looking at my natal chart earlier and wondered why or how it should bear such similarity to the synastry chart. My boyfriend Sun/Asc mirror mine, so he is Leo Sun/ Scorpio Asc whilst I'm Scorpio Sun/ Leo Asc. (this has been referred to as a complimentary configuration but mirroring sounds more appropriate).

My natal from cafeastrology.com lists 18 aspects, 15 of which are mirrored in the synastry. I haven't looked at how house positions are mirrored or complimented yet. See below:

The synastry of course has many more aspects listed and I wonder if these mirror those of my bf in the same manner. In fact, it would be interesting to compare how many are common to both. Or who has more.

Our relationship has been mainly positive and wonderful so far, although a few difficulties begin to emerge. Some of these will express the more challenging aspects which I also have in my natal, e.g., Moon opp Pluto. It seems, then, that I am to be presented with similar challenges again. Or have I walked into a relationship because my childhood relationship with my mother has caused me to become addicted to experiencing certain miseries. I am inclined to believe that this is the guiding hand of fate, rather than me being driven by unfinished psychological business.

I think I've got this wrong, Ceridwen said - if we meet someone who has the same pattern as we have, he becomes our "mirror"'

Instead I've compared my natal to the synastry, when the mirroring effect was supposed to be in the context of natal to natal. So have I stated the obvious by drawing comparisons with the synastry, as many similar patterns are bound to occur?

Of course it is important if synastric aspects mirror your natal.

Also, in the same generation other people often act as a mirror for our outer planets aspects. As this happens so often, I believe the mirrored outer planet`s aspect needs to be connected with a more personal aspect.

Example:
I have Venus squrae Pluto

Many people in my generation will have their Pluto squaring my Venus (though apparently fewer than I originally thought. But that depends on the used orb I guess).

This becomes a "hot spot" if they also have a personal planet, an angle or ruler of an important house in direct, tight contact with my Venus.

As ever, you offer useful and interesting information to ponder, Ceridwen, articulating what some may perceive a bit of intuitively, but not gotten a practical handle on analyzing. As others have said, I also appreciate your disciplined and careful habits in presenting your ideas around here. Very helpful and worthwhile. Glad you bumped it... So much good stuff of yours, buried around here.

...I notice you mentioned IC/MC and ASC/DSC, but did not offer any examples. I am wondering how you utilize these angles, in such an analysis.

For example, as a possible "complement" type relationship, I see...

My MC conj PLUTO
Her IC in Scorpio

In this example, the angles are used similarly to planets in the comparison, with the opposite angles as the yin and yang pair.

My VENUS Sq MC/IC
Her MARS Cj IC

In this instance, it is the Venus/Mars as the yin/yang. Would you think this relevant?

Since the angles would have rulers, are you rather suggesting something like ...

Ruler of her ASC (Virgo) is Mercury,
Ruler of my DSC (Gemini) is Mercury.

I see quite a few of these aspects in my synastry. ...Definitely see the mirroring of aspects I probably don't accept about myself, so they rankle me in others...as well as what I like about myself.

It seems to cast quite a wide net if you also include the aspects that dispositors make, such as the example in the Paul-Joanne synastry you gave...

His Venus Disp Scorpio opp. Pluto -
her Venus trine Pluto

You are saying here that the dispositor of his Venus is in Scorpio, and opposing Pluto?

I wonder if you couldn't find similar connections using the house rulers of the houses the planets are in, rather than dispositors of the planets. I wonder how that differs?

Would something like this be taking the "complement" idea too far afield?

My Venus in 1st house
Her Mars dispositor in 1st house

Are you including Jupiter-Saturn as a yin/yang pair, as far as the "complementing" goes? I don't see examples of it it what you give.

I love this thread Ceridwen - and I completely agree! I've noticed similar things. There is definitely an attraction when there are similar patterns in the natal charts.

I was curious why you didn't pair up houses and signs... or houses and aspects. I might've accidentally missed it though.
What I mean is... for example - if a person has Sun in Leo and the other person has Sun in the 5th... or - if a person has Mars in aspect to Venus and the other person has Mars in the 7th.
Do you think those are significant?
