Which is more important for long term?

I have read that composite is more important for long term relationships and synastry is the beginning stages. I suppose this makes sense since the longer you are with someone the longer your energies intertwine and the more you become like a team but am curious to see how many people think synastry is more important or vice versa and why.

Perhaps this thread will lead to reflection and reevaluation of the importance of each.

I know you are asking for either or. I'm of the mindset that both are of value. If I look at both, it gives me a comprehensive view of the relationship I'm in.

Well, what I can say is from my experience both are important, but you can have a nice relationship without good synastry but with a great composite, and then if you have good synastry but a bad composite, it's pretty much doomed. Bad composites always make people feel like their relationship is going nowhere, aimless and directionless. So in my opinion the composite is more important.

And I don't agree with that hogwash about you notice synastry first and then the effects of the composite are felt later. No way, I can always feel composites at first sight.

Fascinating RAS
This is my dilemma, though. I have rarely seen both good. Have you? So, if you have a good synastry and bad Comp, would you forget the whole thing

I completely agree. Also, Bad composites always reveal themselves. You want at least 3 planets in the same sign or even out of sign conjunctions. Thats one I always felt was important.

Of course, it's different for everyone. I mean that. Some people feel the effects differently, our needs and wants in relationships are so varied, it's hard to say. I've seen "ehh" composite and somehow for some reason, karmic or what...theyre still married 20 something years later. I figure not everyone is meant to be happy. Okay, end rambling..

I agree with Birdy to an extent...

And I always look at both to be honest, more out of habit and curiosity.

I think sometimes that weak composites can reveal themselves as a lack of planetary clusters and scattered all over the chart. Sometimes a composite can just SING important. It's not everything, but it's something...it can reveal patterns in a relationship, in ways sometimes synastry won't. I think taking both into accounts helps, definitely.
I don't know what you call 'bad; composite...to me I define it as strong or weak because in the case of relationships, I look at them in terms of which ones will have a strong impact, and some won't have much of one on you in the long term (I mean regardless of whether it turns long term or not). I guess some relationships can really also be defined as better than others...but as well, even the ones which for instance aren't all nice but are strong will stick with you, maybe teach you something, maybe be very essential in finding the next relationship which is long term and sticks. So I guess that's why I don't find myself being too hung up on good or bad with composite. I have a sort of ex that I adore to this day and who I am friends with, who has been like a God send to me in terms of love relationship lessons. We had a horrendous series of Grand Crosses in composite. It was somehow impossible for romantic relationship but has turned as a dream come true for friendship, even though there was plenty of sexual attraction.

I know this doesn't really address the question of long term partners in the conventional sense but I wanted to add it

I do hear that transits on the composites themselves can also reveal something about the timing of the whole thing, like if it will work to long term on not. I think there's something to the theory, though I've not put it to practice myself.

The composite is more important as this will tell you WHEN the relationship is likely to be over. For compatibility, you need to look at synastry.

The composite is in play BEFORE you meet. it can even time when you two meet. Obviously in play AS SOON AS you meet.

Yes, Coffee, I agree with you. As long as the exact times are given, it can be true.

Personally, I am looking for a fine balance between the two. I have come across fantastic synastries but rather negative -overall- composites and it never lasted. So, I would rather go with a so-and-so synastry if it's also backed by a so-and-so (with nothing negative) composite. When one or the other is off, this is telling you something. Of course the tolerance of some people, the patience, the lack of options, the security factor, the resilience, and even karmic ties will eventually decide about the success and/or longevity of the relationship.

I don't think we can judge just by counting the years together; some people stay together for lack of better options suppressing themselves greatly and feeling pretty sad and pathetic in their marriage. I don't consider that a "successful relationship" just because someone counted the years to be a certain number.

Coffee, you're talking in terms of the composite in aspect with what, transits as well? Like rulers of certain houses etc affecting the outcome?

I think also that people may have time where the relationship is under duress and that can be seen in their personal natal and composite, and they don't always 'take the way out'. Sometimes the thing is just strong, or they choose otherwise. Certainly in older generations where marriages conventionally lasted longer, they stuck together regardless. All those events triggering crises might not manifest in the same way. The relationship quality like Anon said can be poor or mediocre or even so-so.

But also, I dunno....what relationship is happy all the time.....even when I hate you, I love you. I might hate you more for a time due to my own moving issues. After a long time in a relationship, it's hard to separate.

Transits to composite chart. 1st and 12th rulers in relation to each other for the 'end of' (12th) your relationship (1st house is relationship in composite)

Whole sign

Interesting theory Coffee. But this would mean all those who have Gemini 12th and Taurus 1st would have several dozen break up chances each other.

And on the other hand, Aquarius 12th and Pisces first house may never break up for like 21 years [assuming Neptune square Uranus or Uranus square Neptune has just occurred. ]

Please explain with a clear example, thanks.

IMHO, Composite is very important, I think it is more important than synastry.

I am have also become curious on the effects of transits in composite charts....astro.com should get a chart designed for this.

I agree with you on that some composites are strong but perhaps dont give you that I am in heaven feeling but do force you to grow a lot and stick so are still very valuable none the less.

I agree I think both are equally important.. I think synastry will show the initial attraction, and how the they view each other, what they like or dont like.. I think the synastry will show if they will actually come together or not...

The composite (going by my experience) is how I felt being with that person... How I viewed the relationship, and internal feelings about the other person..

I have had the so so synastry with a intense composite.. The composite out weighed the synastry about how I felt... But also deep down inside my feelings would shift from how I felt (composite) to how it really is (synastry)

me i want good synastry. i have a square-y opposition-y chart so anythig that conjuncts also oppositions or squares some planets. but anyway yeh good synastry.

...and with the composite i may be fine with anything except afflictions to the finances of the couple. i can't imagine much i won't be able to handle. plus honestly i do not care much about the others outside the relationship. so thumbup for synastry here!

if i got the way they function wrong tho then scratch what i just sed..

but i thought synastry- how the couple functions together composite how they interact with the environment.. something like that.
