"In folk etymology the word virgin comes from vir- (Latin for 'man') and -gyne (Greek for 'woman'), a man-woman or androgyne" [3].

“She who is nowadays called a woman (femina) in ancient times was called vira; ... so also woman (vira) from man (vir). Some people believe that the word for 'virgin' (virgo) is from vira. A 'heroic maiden' (virago) is so called because she 'acts like a man' (vir + agere), that is, she engages in the activities of men and is full of male vigor. The ancients would call strong women by that name. However, a virgin cannot be correctly called a heroic maiden unless she performs a man's task. But if a woman does manly deeds, then she is correctly called a heroic maiden, like an Amazon” [p.242.]. “The term 'virgin' (virgo) comes from 'a greener (viridior) age,' just like the words 'sprout' (virga) and 'calf (vitula). Otherwise it is derived from lack of corruption, as if the word were formed from 'heroic maiden,' because she has no knowledge of female desire” [p.242]. “Calves (vitulus) and heifers (vitula) are named from their greenness (viriditas), that is, their green (i.e. 'vigorous') age, just as a maiden (virgo) is. A heifer, therefore, is small and has not yet produced young, for after she has been put to breed, she is called a iuvenca or a cow” [p.249.]. [The Etymologies of Isidore of Seville, 7th century AD.]

Interesting, thanks for posting Amelia!

In French "Virgo" is translated "Vierge" which means Virgin or "clean", "blank".

I didn't know there were so many different origins to this word.

Now I understand the connection between virgo and virgin has nothing to do with sexuality or been a prude or been innocent. It has to do with women who are young and like to be part of the world of men and participate in it.

Women who are strong and want to be heroic and are part of the world of men and avoid sex for the purpose of PROCREATION bc they are more motivated by the world of men.

For example I am 28 and even though part of me wants to experience motherhood I struggle with a BIGGER part of me that wants to skip this all together and focus on exploration through travel, intellectual pursuit, politics, and career.

This explains why I identify more with men or with strong independent women.

That is a very different way to look at it, but very interesting indeed.

Thank you for sharing.

Never occurred to me to look up the etymology because it *seemed* obvious enough. Leave it to a Virgo to delve into overlooked yet helpful details!

It's fitting then that Virgo is currently ruled by Mercury, an androgynous planet.

To whoever was wondering about the link between the 6th House (Virgo's) and creativity - androgyny (perhaps reflective of refusal to conform?) is linked to creativity:

Creative people, to an extent, escape rigid gender role stereotyping. When tests of masculinity/femininity are given to young people, over and over one finds that creative and talented girls are more dominant and tough than other girls, and creative boys are more sensitive and less aggressive than their male peers. [...] Creative individuals are more likely to have not only the strengths of their own gender but those of the other one, too.

Great observation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, article and quote! ..

I hated pink as a child and did for a long time. It was in my 20s that I started to feel neutral about pink, hahaha.

I have always rebelled gender roles. In fact I told myself that whoever I marry would be someone I slept with the first night we met and someone I would meet either at a club or via internet. I wanted to show to the world that courtship rules etc and double standards of expected behavior between men and women are in addition to been biologically based are very much influenced by society and if we change our view on gender roles so will our interaction with each other change and the dynamics and gender role rules as our thoughts influence the direction humanity takes evolutionarily/biologically. Environment and biology interact to create reality and shouldn't be separated as they work together like a team.

Anyways I married someone that I slept with the first night we met even though we talked for hours for two weeks before we met, daily. I met him via the internet and if not I probably would have met him at a club since he was a pick up artist at the time.

If you were the type of guy that tested/judged women based on how quickly she slept with you when the guy himself was someone who has had multiple partners sexually I wanted nothing to do with you and thought very little of men like this. I can't stand them and feeel that men like that think they are more valuable than women, are very insecure and or don't understand the meaning of unconditional love and think love is about owning and possessing. I understand that jealousy is an adaptive trait for both men and women for different reasons, I even wrote a fascinating paper on it. But my ideal man is strong intellectually and wants to evolve and so makes an effort to make decisions based on intellect more than on biological impulse and this is how we will evolve and how the function of jealousy will change and is currently changing slowly now that women work and paternity tests exist.
