I've got Saturn in the first house square my Sun in the 10th. Yikes!

Everything sand said. I can't remember if it was the placement or the aspect to my Sun, but there was something about low self-esteem (which would stem from being overly critical of one's self). Along the lines of being responsible, the individual is also likely to be respectful/abiding of rules/laws, and have a strongly grounded value system (Saturn gives structure and boundaries) - and, I guess in some ways, may be stubborn/unrelenting when it comes to their principles. All these may make the individual appear stiff, rigid or stoic.

My Saturn doesn't conjunct my Scorpio Ascendant, but I think it reinforces it to some extent, making it almost steely. Also, I don't know if there's any truth to this, but my Saturn is in Sagittarius, and I like to think that it is not happy there; afterall, Sagittarius is like its ruler, Jupiter, and loves exploration and discoveries, openness and expansiveness. It's definitely a hard placement (and aspect) for my poor Leo ego. Thankfully, my Sun also trines Neptune and sextiles Pluto, and my Moon trines Saturn to help soften it somewhat.

Does Saturn conjunct the Ascendant? Or how about the Sun? I read that some planets in conjunction with the Sun results in combustion, including Saturn. I don't think it's a good thing, but in the case of Saturn, it may help reduce the harshness associated with a first house placement.

I don't know what a conjunction with Mercury looks like - maybe someone who is logical/methodical in thought (again, going back to structure), and not very expressive/communicative verbally, or at least challenged?

Finding Saturn in the natal birth chart is where we will all find exposure like the first man and the first woman. This is the spot where nakedness and weakness exist, but like the first human beings, and like mythological Cronus, we are meant to make the absolute most of before the time is up. Time on planet Earth is under the sole rulership of the planet Saturn, Saturn is where we must ask “there must be something more,” and “there are times when I must try to be so much more alive”.

The Saturn sign is the sign of being human. The Sun sign is the spiritual, the place of God in our lives. Saturn is not the devil, far from it, Saturn is what makes us fragile, where we hide. Saturn in Aquarius is afraid of the friendship of man, feels alone, but is endowed with the purest form of Saturnine air and mental ability to create community, it is up to him to pursue this and become a true Aquarian, in order to be human, and draw upon that pain of being alone to achieve it before his death. Scorpio Saturn is asked to be a strong warrior, he is asked to exhibit the features of Scorpio, to be deep, and passionate, Libra Saturn is asked to be perfect in partnership and to be the perfect Libran diplomat pleasing all and upsetting none.

One great lie of Astrology is ascribing the Sun as the most important influence in the sky. He might be the strongest, the brightest, the most obvious, but it is on the Earth that we live, and in the Air that our existence as human beings is borne out. The most important element in the sky is not the Sun, the undying, spiritual force of warmth, it is the cold ringed planet of sobering and haunting beauty, a silent figure, a figure of insecurity a figure of rage at being out-caste from paradise, a figure sublime in his Aquarian and immensely painful and real state.

Is it consciousness if a being feels nothing but warm Sun on its face? Grass feel this, they grow using sensory data collected from hormones which encourage growth and reproduction. Sentience felt by all creatures are part of the Sun, as well as the Moon. Reproduction is part of the sexual selection as described by Mars and Venus rulerships. Animals share these planetary influences with human beings. But Saturn is the planet who has consciousness. To become your Saturn sign is the greatest challenge that anyone can attempt. The person they are within the human race, the things that they are to be remembered by, and what their children will think of them as is governed by their natal Saturn. This is the real deal. This is your Earth Self, the site where you are a true human being in fault as well as in greatness.

My Saturn is in Scorpio..

In one way Saturn´s opportunity in Scorpio is to have a say in making a brand new city plan, in making a new name for a family which was wiped out by natural disaster or by plague, or by the afflictions and mortifications which the tropical sign of Scorpio has a freedom to bring. Saturn has age, has wisdom and wishes to meditate and to take pride in the achievements and the name that he has inherited or worked hard to raise, but Mars is the commander of Saturn in this placement, Mars clads Saturn in war armour, and thankfully Saturn does not have to fight during the day time Sun as in Mars´s  Aries daytime rulership, where he is in fall, but during Mars´s nightime rule where Saturn´s cold nature is more accommodated for.

It is said by modern astrology that this placement confers a strong desire nature, and this is true since it is Scorpio which creates desire and Martian qualities in Saturn rather than the idea of Saturn dampening and blocking Scorpio´s natural energy.

The attacks to which Saturn must defend against in Scorpio are vicious and are in pursual of Saturn´s total destruction and death. However Scorpio also gives Saturn power in this position. It is not the power which tired old Saturn is most happy with, but it is a power nonetheless which allows it to defeat any enemy, the power of Saturn here is both control over nuclear weapons, it is that psychological advantage of the mote, but also of resources which are unseen, and unknown even to Saturn until the moment of dire need. Another scenario for Saturn here is that of being overwhelmed by forces which create a dire emotional situation for which it is not prepared. This is the emotional shaking which leads to emotional self control, control of emotion, control of desire, control of Mars´s anger, lust, though of course “control” does not mean repression or negation, it means control, aqueducts control water to bring it and satisfy the city. Control here means that Saturn focuses the anger and lust of Mars polishing them and making them work better. A stone aqueduct of pure water as opposed to a dirty stream is one possibility.

This is the h1 Saturn reading I most connect with..

If Saturn is on the ascendant, the first house cusp, or somewhere in that vicinity, this has been called the chart of an “Early Riser.” This suggests that during the first years of this life, Saturn will be in the Formative Sector, very inwardly directed, as it moves through houses one, two, and three. At around 7 or 8 years of age, it will arrive at the fourth-house cusp, which always marks a major turning point, upward in the chart. From this point forward, for the next 15 or so years, Saturn will be rising in the chart, as it moves through the houses 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9.In fact, from the time Saturn crosses the fourth-house cusp (I.C.), there will gradually be an ever-increasing sense of confidence that builds within the child, turning away from a more inward and formative time, toward a more outward and social experience. By the time Saturn reaches the 7th house cusp and moves into the upper houses, the child will be a teenager, coming into a more outward and aware time, socially, at quite an early age. This young person may very well be socially prominent, perhaps a class leader or the center of social attention. This is why this Saturn placement is called the “Early Riser.”This social momentum continues to rise until Saturn reaches the very top of chart, so around 21 years of age this person is flying high, having rising to some kind of fruition prominence early on. But we should also point out that as Saturn crests the top of the chart, this marks a turning point, the end of the rising part of the cycle and the beginning of a new cycle, as Saturn moves downward through the chart. Many early-riser types have to be counseled to let the past go, and not to attempt to drive forward, because things will not go on just as they have been – always rising.Instead, there will a turning away from what was, the past success, and, very gradually of course, learning to listen to a new, and more inner, message, a message that will grow stronger as Saturn moves downward in the chart, eventually leading to an entirely new cycle of personal investment, and eventual return. So it should not surprise us that at around 30 years of age, just as everyone else seems to be launched firmly in one direction or another, the early-riser types take a turn inward, going back to school so to speak, and gets busy building or investing, while others seem to be harvesting the results of their work. The result stage of the early rise is delayed until later in their 30s, when Saturn crosses the 4th house cusp once again, and begins to rise through the chart, bringing a new cycle of social prominence and the results of all the investment work.

Thank you for sharing the link, sand! I greatly enjoyed reading the article, and was surprised to learn about Saturn's affinity with Air!

Despite my earlier post, I do feel for Saturn, and I remember a time when I learnt to appreciate and embrace it to the point where I came to identify with it, because I felt that Saturn informed a good part of my human experience, and that I wouldn't be me without it. This article reminded me of that.

I also have Saturn in H 1 in Sagittarius conjunct Uranus. I come across as conservative or at least pretty normal and responsible and polite. I also look vaguely like a Capricorn Asc.

But yes, especially when I was younger I was very hard on myself and never really fit in with my peers because I was more mature. Currently though I don't notice Saturn in the 1st as much, I think Uranus has taken over. So nothing is set in stone.

Depending on the aspects to Saturn, you may benefit from a strong resilience to develop your individuality, even if your childhood environment is unsupportive. But if the aspects are tough, you could develop a stiff personality or an avoidant personality or one which does not connect the impact of their attitude with others and vice-versa.

My boyfriends' does. I would say he's pretty um... Serious at heart. He goofs off, but everything has an undercurrent of serious. He's also depressed, critical, and hard on himself and others.

His sun is in cap, so lots of saturn influence all around.

That being said, he's also steadfast and hard working. So, it does good things too. It's definitely made him appear to me to be the most adult bf I've ever had, even though he's younger than me.

Now I know why I felt like "more mature" at the very young age..

I have Saturn in 1st...in Virgo.

You can say I criticize myself like no other...its horrible. I can really pick myself apart. I do realize perfection doesn't exist, but "perfection" or the quest of, is my default setting.

sigh. its tough, TBH.
