I have always loved books about survival in harsh environments- some of my favorites include Daniel DeFoe's Robinson Crusoe, Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness, Henri Charrière's Papillon, and books by people who climbed or tried to climb Everest.

I started reading about my NN in Scorpio and it only makes sense that this would interest me:

quote:
A tendency to be overly self-reliant and set in our ways, to cling to our possessions (material and otherwise) and habits, to be too fearful of crisis and overly focused on security, and to attempt to achieve success through sheer will rather than listening to our sixth sense are some of the issues this position suggests. With this position, we need to loosen the grasp we have on the things and people around us and open ourselves up to our soul's need for transformation, change, and regeneration.

http://www.cafeastrology.com/articles/northnodeinscorpio.html

I love self-reliant people (Robinson Crusoe) and have been trying to figure out for a long time how to just let everything go and not see it as a crisis.

Do you see any relationship between your favorite books and your nodes?

Not at ALL. My favorite literature aligns with various parts of my chart, but mostly with my Sun.

I've noticed I like authors who are water-influenced. All of my personal planets except my sun and chart ruler are in water. I like stories that touch me emotionally.

For example, Grapes of Wrath is my favorite book of all time. John Steinbeck is a Pisces sun and Mars, Scorpio moon. And his mercury and Venus conjunct my Ascendant.

Checking some more authors, however, i think it's really more synastry and less about one sign or element in particular.

^ Thanks for your thoughts on the matter!

One of my best friends is a very feminine, elegant woman whose favorite author is...Stephen King. She insists that his style of writing is beautiful. Then I realized her NN is conjunct his sun, so I thought there might be a connection.

So too with another friend, a Libra, who reads a lot of Buddhist writings. Her NN is Pisces.

All things considered, I see the nodal axis playing out just as much as anything else in the chart.

I once read that the sun is like the main character of a play, the moon and other planets are the supporting actors...and the nodal axis is the play itself.

So I do like literature that lets me vicariously "live" through a story that speaks to my own journey.

Hmmm my NN is Taurus and I tend to like Libran-themed books (humourous books about relationships and sex). Not so much Taurus-themed. Books about food don't interest me.

Economic books? Well, I must admit that the ideas behind Malcolm Gladwell's "Outliers: The Story of Success" and Jeff Rubin's "Why Your World Is About to Get a Whole Lot Smaller" fascinated me, but not enough to buy either book, just enough to read the synopsis/get the "jist" of them online. The minutiae of the details bores me, though.

Yeah, my NN is in Aries, too, and I can't say I see a connection in regards to literature. What would that be? War stories? Warrior legends?

Maybe to an extent, but it definitely isn't what I would explain to someone as my favorite genre.

I like classic works of literature, as well as some sci-fi, magical realism, etc. I love foreign literature and strive to be a translator one day. I studied Spanish and itailan literature in college.

My Sun is Sagittarius in 10th, Mercury in Scorpio 9th, conjunct MC.

Why wouldn't there be? I figure, the whole chart is always involved with everything.

Thanks, Aquacheeka. I guess my thinking here goes against the grain, so I will drop the subject unless someone else seems interested.

One last thing: your SN in Scorpio must like those sex books and might "want to take a load off" by laughing about it.

Granted, it's all speculative.

Sorry if it seemed I was pushing the issue.

Thanks for posting this thread, Faith! I TOTALLY relate to this in my taste in literature (and movies and tv shows, for that matter). It's not so much the sign of my NN (Taurus), but the fact that it's in the sixth house of Virgo. I really like finicky protagonists, busybody types, rules/societal norms, etc. I also REALLY enjoy art history criticism.

The Way We Live Now by Anthony Trollope

The Age of Innocence by Edith Wharton

The Inspector-General/Government Inspector by Nikolai Gogol

Same here, only I don't have that much water in my chart. Something to ponder.

NN is Libra.

No no, that actually sounds about right. Might have more to do with SN than NN for me.

Вoйнá и мир by Лев Никола́евич Толсто́й, 1869

Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy aka "Leo"

A true epic. Not everyone shares this opinion, but I regard this as a rarely equaled masterpiece. It's one of the longest novels ever written.

My NN is in Cancer in the 5th House, and the book reflects that because it deals with key family based themes such as leadership, love, financial disaster, death, war, relationships, family life and aristocracy. There are love affairs, infidelities, duels, betryals, dillusionments, religious issues, obsessions, assasinations, basically everything to do with family life.

I have an Aries north node.

I have a range of things that I like. It's hard really to just pick a category.

I really like magical realism. I like poetry, but certain kinds, not like whiny, annoying stuff. I like mysteries if I want a quick read. My favorite novel is Eco's "The Name of the Rose". I really want to read more of his work, especially "The Island of the Day Before". I like nonfiction about things/people that interest me. I like some theologians, but not the really wacked out ones or the fire-and-brimstone type.

Many of my favorite writers are Libra and Gemini, with some Aqua thrown in, plus the occasional Cancer.

Writing style is very important to me.

I don't really like action-adventure stories. I don't like "out in the woods" or "outdoorsy" kinds of stuff. I'm definitely an "indoor girl". I don't like romance novels. I really do not like a lot of memoirs/"creative nonfiction" that I've read. I tend to not be into the "activisty" kinds of books, unless I actually care about the issue and the person narrating does not irritate me. Even then, not my favorite. I get really bored by "chick lit" (literary equivalent of "chick flicks") and "motherhood/mothers" stories. I don't like to read books with elements that I find deeply disturbing. I also tend not to like books if I do not like its overall message/philosophy.

NN Cancer in the 6th.

I don't have a favorite book per se,
But I noticed I enjoy books about general health and well being. Books with details that need analyzing.

It does fit my NN in the 6th, not so much cancer.

I enjoy books on scientific studies relating to health (6th) and human behavior, but written in a palatable and nurturing( cancer) way.

I also read alot of unpopular literature. I enjoy those a bit beneath the shallow waters. It must be a cancer/Virgo thang.

The famed author whom I have read most of is Paulo Coelho though, tbh I've read 75% of his books or a bit more such that if I read one more a feeling of nausea would sweep over me. Hell ive even read a biography on him. Coelho is a Virgo, and his writings are crisp, nurturing (cancer NN) and spiritual.

I think this about sums it up. I do see the link now between NN and literature. Thanks Faith for helping me organize my understanding!

I am a libra sun but I abhor chick lit. I could only watch them in movies, for instance shopaholic played by isla fisher. My bro has a moon in libra and he enjoys chick lit!

Thank you for the answers, these are so interesting! I was a literature major in college, and my favorite subtopic in astrology is the nodal axis. This brings them together

Extant_pisces, so true about the NN's house. Mine is in the 4H, widely conjunct Uranus. So it makes sense to me that I would love stories about people making homes (4H) that are weird (Uranus) and face-to-face with all the brutal forces of nature (Scorpio.)

My husband is also Scorpio NN (I forget which house, might be 4 since he's Cancer rising) and he shares my interest in mountaineering books, books about living in extreme conditions like in Antarctica or prison cells. His favorite author is Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn.

Fleurdelis, my sun and Mercury are in the 6H and most of my reading is about mind-body medicine. My sun's decan of Capricorn tends to like radical ideas, and my health interests reflect that.

I don't read much fiction.

Maybe there is a connection between Aries NN and magical realism and fantasy. It makes sense to me: Aries is child-like, and children love fairy tales.

Oh, how I love The Alchemist!

I read an interesting anecdote in David Rothkopf's book Superclass, about Coelho meeting Bill Clinton. This story was told to the author by Coelho himself.

The President had invited Coelho to the White House along with several other dignitaries for some kind of reception. Coehlo felt inferior to all the other attendees and wished he could vanish. But when the President walked in, he went straight up to Coelho and began a long, animated, affectionate conversation. Turns out that Clinton is a huge fan of Coelho's!

Both men are born right around the Leo-Virgo Cusp. So maybe that's why they got along so well.

Sort of like Elvis (Jan 8) meeting Nixon (Jan 9) and sweet-talking him into getting him a Federal Narcotics badge, despite all the red tape and reason not to. A meeting of the minds.

Faith, I enjoy mind-body medicine too! Energy medicine and alternative healing.

I used to read fiction more, but after getting into reading, I really only read non fiction.

Interesting titbit I agree those with similar placements/ near dobs get along swimmingly. I met a girl who I later found out has my sun/moon and I was wondering why our conversation's so easy. And we liked the same foods! Haha.

I liked the Alchemist too, was great. The most memorable for me was Veronika decides to die which is my fave book of his. I think that was Libra and Scorpio themed, with Neptune thrown in the mix..
