For a person-specific birth horoscope the Asc sign/rising sign is All Important!
The Asc degree is the spine, the backbone of the birth horoscope. It is what brings together or embodies the luminary energies and those of the other planets into a particular mode of expression. Most often it is the most important sign in your chart *this lifetime*.
This self-evident since the Asc is the most specific point in the horoscope (tied to the MC degree) and differentiates you from others born on the same day with the same planetary-sign placements (and nearby locations).
The Asc/1st house is your horoscope-specific 'Aries' point and rules the head/thinking, and body/ego - the self-identity. The Aries principle does not hide behind masks, but is a direct I AM self-identity that is loaded into the body at the birth process. "Mask" is a complete misnomer for the Asc put into use apparently by astrologers who may be more focused on metaphysical principles than the earthly, biological ones. In addition, the idea of 'Asc=mask' helps skirt the issue that the Asc sign of many birth charts does not match the personality/physicality of the supposed owner of that chart.
Unfortunately the problems of accurate Ascendants for birth horoscopes continue. Notice how many of the birth charts for celebrities on astrodatabank are based on rounded time figures (10:00 am), B/C/D-rated data. The most important of these problems is the total reliance of many astrologers on hospital documents that in my practice have proven to be inconsistent in their accuracy. Apparently on some occasions hospital staff may mark the time of registration at the hospital as the 'birth time.' One Australian client had numerous eyewitnesses who are relatives who collectively estimated a range of 6-7:30 am, while the birth document stated 12:15 pm. The correct chart was confirmed for 8:14 am.
These are things that astrologers find very disconcerting and inconvenient. It forces one to navigate the complex language of astrology in order to ensure that the chart actually matches the person and their life. This is often not an easy task, but for astrology to be taken seriously it must be done.
Throw away your popular astrology books that insist on the 'Asc=mask' theory. It is a diversion. The popularization of astrology has produced some deviance from sound horoscopic practice.
A sample rectification: Howard Stern
The C-rated birth chart based on 1:15 pm time quote (which Stern previously contradcited with 3 pm).
The easy, obvious rectification has Jupiter near Asc in mid-Gemini. He's a blabbermouth, and very tall: Jupiter all the way.
