because they have no filters?

It's because of their honesty. They're so up front about everything, it just flows.
(and like I said, No filters)

Most of the Sagittarius people I know are honest and light hearted. They look at the big picture, so I guess that’s why they don’t see the need to focus on little details and “filter” their speech. That’s part of the Sag charm haha they’re so open (not all of them). They often let you know where you stand.

And there’s the “treat others like how you want to be treated” mentality. They like people to be honest to them, so they serve everyone a dose of honesty lol

Because they can get away with it,blessed by jupiterian luck.Aries is also blunt but people lock horns with Aries,Sagittarius can just do “Heeeheehee” after being blunt and people let them go,they just laugh it off.My brother has mercury in sagittarius and he is the kind of kid that will tell his Dad’s boss that his Dad refers to him as “baldy” at home.

What Lalalinda said! Not much for filters. Lots of things are said and done on impulse (which is a fire word). they just wanna have a fun.
And, asking why Sagittarius is a fire sign is a bit odd, no? Like asking why oxygen is a gas; it has these traits, it behaves like this, under normal circumstances it does this...so therefore, it is!

I'm a sag with Merc Scorp.

Saggies don't say things to intentionally hurt. Most times we don't even realize that we hurt someone's feelings until after the fact..and often stick our foot even deeper into our mouths with the apology. :\

Yeah see? They do things in the heat of the moment! Scorpio Hermes can be quite in-the-momenty too. But that's why they'll get along with other fire signs! More ready to accept the better side of a person.

With some Sagittarius-influenced people it's funny.. With others it can get unnerving. Sagittarius Mars is probably the biggest culprit in my experience.. just had an interesting outing with one earlier.

Sag is a fire sign because "self expression" or "cause" is the major force behind anything it does. The same is the case for Aries and Leo, just focused on different approaches to the dynamic of "self". Aries is charged with establishing and validating the self, Leo reigns over mastering and manifesting the self, and Sag seeks to elevate and transfigure the self.

When one seeks to elevate something, one must have the vision to know where each path of elevation leads. Sagittarius is blessed/cursed with this vision and is therefor perpetually stuck in foresight mode. When we listen to a story, we don't particularly hear the details as much as the moral or lesson behind the story. In fact, this is how many of us see life, one big story in which we are constantly seeking a higher lesson. When Sag is stuck gazing in the distance, they often completely miss or trip over present reality.

One aspect of being social is the need to recognize truth. When people hide truth behind social games or protocol, Sag just sees a person hiding behind walls of glass, obstructing the truth. Here is where Sagittarius can unintentionally hurt the feelings of others. We are blunt, because it's what we see, plain as day. In a Sagittarius's view, if you didn't want to know then don't ask. If you didn't ask, why are you flaunting something you don't want anyone to mention? Perhaps you (like Sag) are also stuck outside the present and therefor require the courtesy of someone saving you from future embarrassment.

Depending on other parts of the chart, these themes will manifest differently. There ARE Sagittarians who walk around in foresight auto-pilot, Sagittarians who think it's funny to make others uncomfortable, or even Saggis with malicious intent (though I hope they are rare, it sure is a waste of all that positive potential).

Something briefly touched on by another commenter but not really explored is, "Why do people let Sagittarius get away with their social issues, while Aries always gets his face punched?" I think the answer simply comes down to intent. Aries engages others in a challenging way, but Sag (as a generalization) approaches others with good intentions. It is not Sag's intention to conquer the beliefs of others, or establish their place as the dominant self. We generally intend to educate others on their possibilities and point out areas where their possibilities are being obstructed.

I think some people get offended, because Sag is one of the clumsiest signs of the zodiac yet they jump to point out when others falter. Then to add insult to injury, we end the sentence with a smile and a laugh. What some seem to misunderstand is Sag is not laughing at you, he's laughing with you (sometimes he's laughing for you if you are too caught up in your trappings to see the truth of the thing). Many of us laugh or trivialize because we have tripped so many times on our own path, we identify with the struggle. We know in 10 years you will look back and laugh. We are just getting a little ahead of ourselves.

A final point. Sag generally expects others to be on their own paths, scaling their own mountains. If we look over from our mountain and see the foothold you have is slipping, we will point it out. Many of us know however that the best perspective of your situation is your own. Perhaps from here your hold looks faulty, but from your perspective it is stable. We don't expect you will take us seriously, only that you will consider what we see from our perspective.

A lot of this is generalizations based on the archetype of Sagittarius. Different personal planets and aspects will twist these mechanisms into all kinds of habits. When in doubt tell them, "Thanks" and take or leave whatever they are bluntly saying. If we cross the line, offer us the same courtesy we would you and tell us. =)

This reminds me of something that happened a few weeks ago:

A friend of mine and I went out for lunch and she also invited her other friend (the last she mentioned about her friend was that she was pregnant).

Her friends arrives, we greet, I see her bump and ask when the baby is due..
*deathly silence and shocked looks from both*
She replies, "I had my baby a month ago."

OMG! I was soooooo embarrassed and felt absolutely terrible..
Then apologised and then my friend quickly says that there was a misunderstanding and then I do it again! "There was no misunderstanding. You told me she was pregnant and didn't mention that she had the baby already so when I saw her now the first thing I noticed was her protruding belly."

Her friend just smiled and said it's ok. She talked about how she had gained weight and was trying to lose it.
I still felt awfully rotten the entire time because I was thinking about how those words hurt her feelings and wondered about the impact they had on her. Argh!

Just before we were about to leave, she brought it up again. She put her hand on mine and said not to feel bad. She was alarmed that I had "the balls" to say
What she knew everyone thinks but doesn't say. We also chat often now.

Anyhow, that's just one eg of our so called foot in the mouth syndrome. :\

Charmaine,

the exact thing happened to my mom; a month or so after I was born she met a friend, who asked her when the baby would be due.

Well, that was the last kick my mom needed to lose the weight again, and has stayed down of it ever since. So it is not always the worst thing, this bluntness. Even if it might pinch a little at first.

O_o Kind of glad I wasn't the only to say something like that. I felt bad because some people are really sensitive about their weight, you know.

Glad it motivated your mum.

HAha I'm glad you gained a friend out of that brutal experience. I've definitely had my slip ups. Many years ago a friend of mine looked nervous and when I asked what was wrong, he said he was anticipating the results from an AIDS test. I replied that I hoped everything turned out positive. >headslap<

My Moon is in Virgo, so I have been hard pressed to learn the right things to say/do in public. When I walk out my door I have thousands of checks and balances saying, "watch your step, scoot up to the table so you don't drop food all over your white shirt...(why did you wear a white shirt to lunch?), No... take two trips, don't try to balance the drink on your elbow, swallow before you laugh, His grandparent just died... don't talk about grandparents, those two women are either mother and daughter or grandmother and grand daughter....refer to them as sisters, OooOo she looks pregnant I wonder when she's due?!!!DONT ASK!!!" LOL

Unfortunately for my close friends, the foot in mouth happens when I am more relaxed and comfortable. Fortunately for me, my friends understand I genuinely try.

I work with a Sagittarius sun, Scorpio Mercury.
She's hella spicy. People think she's mean because she's blunt but that's definitely not the case.

I can totally understand why Virgo is an Earth sign and why Gemini is an air sign, but I don't get why Sagittarius is fire.

Interesting.
Sagittarius is to elevate the self.

How do you explain this Sagittarian behavior,

I once had an "ugly" boyfriend of who I really liked, but my mom who is a Sagittarius Sun and Mercury, always felt like she needed to remind me. I hated it because she kept sharing this with me without my asking. Whenever I spoke of him or needed advice on our relationship, it was as if she couldn't get past the fact that he was ugly...OKAY MOMMY I GET IT.

I'm a Capricorn Mercury and we're honest and straight up, but only when asked.

I think Sagittarius has tunnel vision, really.

Sag doesn't like omission. Omission = hiding = guilt = dirty secrets = low morals.
The sign of Sag is all about integrity and high morals.

So, telling it EXACTLY like it is, is being honest. Tact and sugarcoating are a hair away from lying. There is nothing we hate more than lying.

my superior is Sag sun/Leo moon/Scorp merc and she's a conversational terrorist. we get on great professionally despites having opposite personalities. she shoots her mouth off whilst i take a long time observing and then boom. she's always 'boom boom boom' and i 'tak tak boom' lol...

she knows she has no filter, is direct, and means no harm but i tell her nobody is interested in that. we have tremendous respect for each other based on honesty, directness, and competence alone.

we don't understand why people don't want to hear the truth.

MINE HAS A CAPRICORN MOON TOO!

Sure, I have a Taurus moon. Sure I have a Taurus moon trine Saturn. Let me tell you how it helps..... it doesn't. I'm at least figuring out that I think Sags tend to assume a lot. They don't ask like their polar opposite Gemini does, but rather assume. It's annoying.
