What music do you like? Food? Hobbies?
Disregarding appearances and the difficult-to-ignore fact that her photo was actually on a magazine and in brochures, the most important points were the commonality in terms of beliefs, moral values, political viewpoints, ambition, goals in life, desire for children, love for family, education level, intelligence, achievement/success, hobbies, likes/dislikes, etc. plus mutual admiration.
We're from opposite sides of the Earth and look totally different. Yet, we grew up with the same religion and have the same exact beliefs, although she is a tad more conservative and traditional than I was, having grown up in the South. Our first date was in church, not a dinner date. That was by design. She would have declined a dinner/bar date and that would have been it. She was a proud virgin and kept being a virgin until the day *after* we got married, until all the visitors left.
At 25, she had an academic Masters degree and a professional graduate-level certification. She just became Associate Director and Assistant Designer at one of the world's most prominent fashion houses (a little horsey). She had negotiated deals to license in-house brand names for private label merchandise (tend to be sold at Costco/WalMart etc.)
She painted an oil portrait of me in a weekend just using a photo she borrowed from me. She knew how to operate the impossibly heavy clutch and crude manual transmission on my 1980s Porsche. She could keep up with me on my bicycle. She wanted to move a sofa, so I volunteered, and I thought another guy would be there, but she's a short girl but lifted heavy furniture without a problem. She couldn't cook well, but she can bake the heck out of a cheesecake and make a perfect lemon meringue. On the other hand, I always cooked but had no baking skills.
To this day, we have the same exact hobbies: cooking, cycling, driving fast cars, museums, music, children, etc. She appreciated that I like participating in sports but don't enjoy sitting for hours on end in front of the TV on a Sunday. She liked that I was a former soldier who can hold my own ground. She liked me as a white collared guy who is not prissy. She liked a physically capable guy who can still enjoy his food and not be super skinny, and yet take off for a five mile run later. She liked that I am a hyper aggressive individual, but yet present my soft side most of the time, and leave work at work, and I refuse to bring work home.
We like a wide variety of foods, anything from Latin to European to African to Asian. That was one of the things I liked about her. She was never hesitent to have fries with her burger, and she never went "eww.. what is that." She was worldly and adventurous. I had to explain what the difference between a Cappuccino, a Latte and a Macchiato to the last girl I dated.
One of our first dates was at a jazz club. We like classical music. And everything from R&B to rock to blues to country, and everything else in between. She was surprised that I, the Asian guy, could appreciate country music. I appreciated that she understood the difference between a Shamisen and a Haegeum and a Erhu, just as she understood the difference between a Violin and a Viola. At the same time, I could speak about Aerosmith and Queen, and I could see her face light up.
And then there was the obvious. On my personal computer desk today is still a copy of Bella Petite magazine (from the UK). She is smack in front. There are Macy's catalogs. She's not in front but on easily 5 to 8 pages in each. There are the ads for RL, Mossimo and Guess jeans, etc. with her in it. There are the old Spike Lee movies that I still have on VHS. She has "extra" roles in those. At the end of the day, the talent is overwhelming. But it's hard to ignore a pretty face.
