It's at 29 degrees Pisces. Natal.

Like it or not, you have to appear friendly in retail no matter how you're feeling. I know this is easier said than done. For example, I came to work one day when one of my friends was killed; I failed an exam; and my mom was going through a major crisis. These are only a few of the terrible things that happened to me that day. Despite this, I forced myself to think of something that made me happy in order to put on a genuine smile.

By appearing friendly, one customer gave me a $15 tip! While I personally don't go up to people and tell them to smile, I'm aware that a lot of customers will judge the store based on their interaction with the employees.

Trying to appear smiley and friendly when you really don't feel like smiling is one of the many challenges of working in the retail industry.

Yeah, if you work for tips, you gotta smile and be extra sweet and accurate. If you don't work for tips, what matters most is kissing up to the boss since that's your only chance at raises and promotions.

I worked as a cashier a while back and certainly did not work for tips. All I expected was an hourly wage.

Nevertheless, customers would give me tips just for smiling. Just exuding a positive vibe does wonders for your customers' mood.

What aspects are you looking for exactly?

When I worked face to face with customers, I was always "smiley and bubbly" even if i was in a crap mood.

I wonder if smiling would be necessary if so many people weren't insecure?

I don't need a smile, just help that's professional or at least competent ('course rudeness is another matter). Maybe it's that I'm just not plagued by the idea that everyone hates me or is judging me harshly as so many others obviously are, or maybe it's I've been around enough swindlers, psychic vampires, and cunning predators to be a wee bit wary of those I don't know pretending to be my friend.

I guess it's lucky I make my own schedule so I can usually be around people when I feel like it.

like moonlightx said, a person can be helpful without crawling up my bum, i appreciate help when i ask for it. it doesn't matter how they look like, if i'm after something, i don't care how unfriendly they look, i will ask for assistance.

i do appreciate a friendly face and would never be rude to people like that, but i just don't expect anyone to 'act' as if they are in a good mood when theyre just not. so long as they try to help out as much as they can thats all that matters. there are people who just try too hard its really annoying. i don't appreciate people being phoney at me. sorry but that makes me want to run away!

Someone walking by my office this past Sunday,
stopped and said "hello".
I waived and said "hello" back. Then he said quote "
awww I want you to give me a nicer and bigger smile than that!! " to which I responded quote " did it cross your mind that I was being polite, returning your "hello" and just perhaps, just maybe, that I don't want to give you a bigger smile?".

My point is this: we give what we feel we can give at any certain moment and shouldn't feel guilty when/if people demand we give more.

The problem with me, I frown without even realizing I am frowning. I have to pay close attention to the act of smiling at all times. It is exasperating. I have a lot of Saturn in my chart, including Saturn in same sign as Moon.

Customer service is one of the hardest jobs...

Some people are just awful,
At the same time we are all customers too.
But some people are just straight psycho.

I hated customer service, boy do I have some weird stories..
I'm glad I'm no longer in customer service, if a customer does get to me, it's cuz they have a violation, and I get to tell them, suck it up!!

I'm not sure what advice to give to smile, of course it should be sincere...
Try individualizing with each customer, make small talk..

That's the only way i will smile at a customer if I'm individually talking to them on a somewhat personal level. I lighten up when I'm complimenting them or vice versa.
